Ross On Wye is a small market town close to Gloucester, Ledbury and Hereford in the West Midlands and famous for it's beautiful streets of independent shops and great shopping, pulling in tourists from all over the country who travel to check out the tourist attractions and the shops here.
This is the first Gimbal Walk TV visit to Ross-On-Wye and we enjoyed it! Our time walking round the town centre and the shops was very enjoyable and we can't wait to visit there again!
Here are a few clips and quotes from websites about Ross On Wye:
"Ross-on-Wye is a market town in England, near the border with Wales"
Ross is well known for its many excellent independent and specialist shops, galleries, restaurants, cafes and hotels, many of which are dog friendly. There is also a Vintage Shopping Trail. Dominating the town is the spire of St Mary the Virgin Parish Church and next to it is the famous Prospect Gardens.
The town, located in the beautiful Wye river valley region, is famous for its panoramic views and attracts many tourists. It is also the centre of a highly productive agricultural district.
Ross-on-Wye Town Council is responsible for running the twice weekly markets which are held every Thursday and Saturday from 9.00am to 3.00pm.
Welcome to Ross on Wye
Embraced by the River Wye, Ross-on-Wye is an inviting place to potter. When William Gilpin wrote Britain’s first travel guidebook about the Wye Valley in 1782, he sparked a trend for ‘picturesque tourism’. Today, as well as enjoying that same scenic beauty, you can browse independent shops, saunter alongside the town’s 19th-century mock-Gothic walls and Gazebo Tower folly and admire pastel-hued dwellings tumbling down the hillside to the river.
The town is the centre of a region historically dubbed Archenfield or ‘Land of Hedgehogs’, and you’ll find examples of the icon in St Mary’s Church, dating back to the 17th century, and on more recent memorials to the Boer War and Second World War.
250 years of tourism
William Gilpin may not be a household name but his legacy has led to one of biggest industries in Britain.
It was 250 years ago in 1770 that he took the first step by organising boat trips along the River Wye, and writing a seminal bestselling book ‘Observations of the River Wye’.
From those humble but visionary beginnings what was later described as The Picturesque Movement came into being, giving a name to a new appreciation of the natural world and its beauty.
The Wye Valley is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, much as it was 250 years ago. This year, 2020, heralds a year long calender of arts, crafts and fun events to celebrate his achievement and the beauty of the Wye Valley. More information at: www.gilpin2020.org

It’s tough to think of anything more quintessentially British than a market town and we think that’s worth celebrating”.

Yes it’s nice!
Bit of an old haunt, though honestly I barely recognised it. Like so many nice English towns, utterly blighted by traffic. (Also, a little sad to see, at 9:20, the old Rosswyn Hotel is now flats or something. Had a few good nights there in the 80s :)
What a lovely town some great looking buildings thanks for showing me around keep on walking 👍🚶🏻❤️
We went there a few years ago. There is a nice walk along by the river at the bottom of the hill.
True!
I was going to go down there but my knees wouldn’t get back up the hill 🤣🤣
This is a lovely little town, i have not been there. Thank you for sharing, Neil. :) xx

Got more interesting towards the end with the town wall & watchtower. And glimpses of countryside.
😅missed the hope and anchor down the hill by the river wye. The most beautiful spot in ross. Oh well.
Going to get it in the next one when I'm back there in Summer!
Lovely video, I’ve visited a couple of times. So it was lovely to see your walk around the town. Congratulations on your 40,000 subscribers, I love the channel, oh and your new white trainers 🤣🤣
Enjoyed the video of my home town now xx thank you
Although I live in Scarborough now in the 90s I lived in Ross On Wye, flat 6 Plymouth House next door to the Man of Ross pub on Wye Street. The flat landlady looked like Margaret Rutherford I used to whistle the Mrs Marple theme tune when she came up stairs for the rent..£32 a week! The shop with all the advertising signs on the wall is called Gwalia which is an old Welsh name for Wales. My daughter lives in Ross sadly don’t see much of her but watching this has brought back some happy memories.
Looks like a very nice town! Good thing James May missile was damp...
🤣🤣
Looks a nice place Neil especially with those views
The man of Ross where my grandmother use to enjoy a pint of wallop beer that is for those who don't know
How did you manage to not see one traffic warden. Amazing!
molto carina questa cittadina
I found the town very hilly ! But still a lovely place.
Very hilly!
Can’t say as I’m inspired to see anything other that the Market House so far. Will be driving up the Wye Valley to Hereford & on to Ludlow however.
Ross on Wye like Monmouth is a town with no railway station.
