When we become adults we forget how to “play”. You say you had so much fun and are so pleased. You feel so happy! It’s great to not have an agenda! I really appreciate this particular video. Am from Georgia and have been privileged to visit this area many times. I love that red rock so much.
For people from back East, it's hard to describe what a magical place Arches NP is as we have nothing to compare it to. Even the drive in is like going to another planet!
FYI. Whenever you hear crows or ravens squawking, it's usually because there's an animal or raptor around that they are warning other crows or ravens about. Next time, remain very still, take your binoculars out, and watch for any movement underneath or near the crow or raven. Look for a fox, coyote, mountain lion, hawk or eagle. Great video, too!
I spent decades in pursuit of that which you describe at the end here. It became the very reason I explored those remote locations. There were several places where I entertained the notion that no human had ever likely been in that particular spot. In those moments, the planet was mine. While my cameras allowed me that lifestyle, I often had to remind myself they worked in service to me and not the other way around.
Raven. When raven speaks to you, give it a listen. Like that the Ringhoffersmwere an adventurous family 100 years ago, but their claim to discovery of what was almost cetainly a sacred place for the original people of the area shows they had a colonizer mindset like most folks of the day. Lovely to see Arches in winter, thank you!
Take it from an old desert rat who has covered this ground as well as many other areas of Utah extensively years ago (as well as currently); you have captured some of the essence of hiking down there. Just going off in an unplanned direction and seeing what you can see is what it is all about. Sure it is nice to go to the highlights, but the sense of "contentedness" as you put it, is usually felt best while "wandering". This is not possible when you have too much of a pre-planned itinerary. As far as videos go, though, you are probably right about this not always being as interesting to the average person. But I liked it, and felt your monologue at the end was really good explaining this to the average viewer who will never get to many of the places you go.
Love that you describe your wandering as letting your "curiosity wander creatively." Relate a lot to that feeling and those are the most memorable trips for me! Please post more of this!! :) Thank you!
I cheered out loud when you said you'll be doing more wandering. It's one of my favorite things to do & I really enjoy that element of your older videos. Thanks for another great start to the weekend!
I’m giving you four stars on this video… This is the type of video I have been waiting for! Although I enjoy your videos I much prefer the unplanned. And instead of calling it wandering maybe you should look at it as exploring. In all of your other videos it’s a very busy schedule with lots to see and do. But to be honest ...one video, one destination Planned or not is where the money shots are. And as you said it allows you to slow down taking in the beauty around you and enjoy some of the things that you may not have seen before. And it’s plain to see that you were pretty happy in this video. And as far as your channel goes this allows you to have content that you’re not going to see on anybody else’s channel. Not being familiar with a certain area is a good thing. Best of luck to you brother and be safe out there.
Aimless wandering is the best! What a great outing, and it's nice to know you can still get away from people in Arches. Headed by there later this spring, and now you've got the hike lined up for my wife and I. Happy trails and safe driving this winter.
Good on you for taking "you" time and taking us along with you. I personally would love to see more of those. Our best trips are the "unexplored" side roads and such that we have never been on. You just never know what you will see. Besides, isn't that what this is all about? discovering new sideroads and unexpected things? Plus, you seem to have in that moment, reinvigorated your fan base with what you hit on. I think that is a great way to reinvigorate yourself after a tough year. What an homage to your father as well! My Dad and I both follow you after he ran across your channel several years ago. We are both from Oregon, and I live in Utah now, so, it hits home for me as well.
As a former Park Ranger who worked at Arches NP, trust me when I say both Arches and Canyonlands have tons of quiet, hidden places that would blow your mind.
Tower Arch is a great place. We have only been there once and took the 4WD road. We were the only ones there, which is great for Arches. While we were having lunch under the arch, some small pebbles came down from the arch, so we quickly grabbed our food and moved out from under the arch. We turned around and looked up at the arch, and there were 2 crows/ravens up there kicking the pebbles of the arch. I can only assume they learnt to do this to chase people away and swoop down to get the abandon food. They are very smart animals.
Thanks for taking us along! We get to see what we are missing. Be careful, that fall you took while alone could've been disastrous if that was a cliff. Safe travels!
Me and my Tacoma zipped off down that dirt road one year while visiting arches. It was a little rainy that day, although dry while I hiked to tower arch. The park had moderate crowds in it, but I had that hike entirely to myself. Some of the best pictures I've taken in Arches were taken on that hike. Amazing and unforgettable.
Great video. It's even more enjoyable knowing that you are not just risking your time, energy, equipment and possobly your life to show us the scenery, but that you're creating play too. love it.
This is more of the type videos I like to see. Meandering and wandering makes each second a wonderful adventure as you enter the unknown. Thanks for the trip!
Tristan, Thanks for sharing this beautiful and fascinating park. I was there in my teens and again in my early twenties, I'm 65 now with severe arthritus. Your video took me back for a visit where I never thought I'd be able to go again. Thank you!
25:48 - Yeap. "Wandering contentment" is the end game - a place that few arrive at- but - once you're there - you "Get it" ------- Also the movie "What about Bob" comes to mind: "Oh great, another vacation that's not a vacation"
Your contentedness came across in this video even before you discussed how satisfied you felt. It is nice to know how much you enjoyed this trek. I liked seeing the domes as you scanned across the scenery. Thanks Tristan!
Not all who wander are lost. Or something like that. I loved this video! The impact nature has on the incredible red landscapes was awe-inspiring at times! The difference the white snow, the moisture of the melted snow, and the different angles of the sun made were so dynamic! Thank you again!
Oh Tristan, we enjoyed this one so much! Such a beautiful place, and your photography is amazing. You work so hard on these videos, but sometimes we get so caught up in them that we forget all you do to make them so great. Thank you so much for giving two old people so much enjoyment.😊😊
Have you thought about doing group hikes with your followers? You could make extra money doing so. You seem so knowledgeable about the outdoors and the areas that you visit.
Arches National Park is one of our favorite parks. We have seen a lot of the arches, but never made it to Tower Arch. Which in some ways is good. It gives us a reason to go again. Happy Wondering!!!
At about 21:47 when you were filming yourself walking by a miniature arch, it would have made me smile if you had backed up and looked through the arch and said, "Howdy" to your viewers. LOL.
16:21 Fantastic view and composition. 21:43 wow!! Epic. It looks like a conjoined double tower. 23:33 wow!! 25:11 Inspiring freedom and the joy within that comes from it is another way to describe it! Bumpy rocky terrain but doable? Thanks for doing this video!! Been wanting to get up there for a few years.
Thank you for another epic and beautiful video. The work you put into these videos is amazing. Don't forget to just enjoy the moment. We enjoy this videos and the effort you put into them.
I was right there at Tower Arch in August, 2022. It was my first time in Arches……I absolutely loved that Park, and hope to get there again this year. So many places within the Park to explore! P.S….Have I told youmlately how much I appreciate the details you give AND show us in your vids? Well, I very much do, Tristan! Thanks for all the effort you put into your vids
I would think EVERY formation is an A tier one, and would want to just sit and breathe in the colors and the whimsical formations. Wandering is my favorite thing. Thank you so much for sharing this. 😊
Have you been to Goblin Valley in Utah? And if you go during a full moon on a clear night you can walk along the goblins by the light of the moon. It’s magical!!
I think the idea of just wandering is a good one. I've sometimes thought that you spend too much time going from place to place trying to show us as much as possible instead of exploring around a little more. Great video. I'm going to put Tower Arch on my bucket list for next summer/fall. Thanks.
Every one of your Arches NP vids through the years have been wonderful - the setting, anthropology and geomorphology are unsurpassed. You do Arches well!
@@SUVRVing Nice to hear and know I should be able to get to some places, not so crowded, via unpaved roads with my suv ! That comment and thought gave me a little rush. lol... "discovered" (Mr and Mrs Ringhoffer)... Dick Gregory has a great line about that word. And yes, re your comments near the end about planned walks vs "spontaneous meandering," I'm a meanderer, chasing both views and light (I'm a photographer) and it's rewards are often like yours in this vid (especially when you basically have a place to yourself).
Great video! Loved the arches and the freeform exploration as well. Don't feel pressured to always hit a certain number of stops in a video. Chances are if you are enjoying a hike your viewers will enjoy seeing your video and hearing your thoughts about the experience.
Thank you for showing me parts I didn’t see while there w my son. He took me there while we were exploring NM,and made a side trip for the day. He is a Geologist and explained alot about the rock formations and it was fubulous! I believe it was John Muir that said, “All who wander are not lost”! Enjoyed the video, thank you!
Aimless wandering leads to purposeful solitude. It regenerates our spirit. Do more of that 🤠 I’m relocating from Texas to New Mexico in March, partly so I’ll be closer to SE Utah for more explorations! I always wanted to explore the Klondike Hills and I didn’t really know about Herdina Park, which is an amazing landscape! More really nice set shots in this video, Tristan.
You are the best! It’s so beautiful! I physically can’t hike anymore so you are providing beauty that is breathtaking for those of us that can’t get to those places.❤️🦋❤️
Wandering... exploring! Yes!! Isn't that the real reason we first got into nature, into life? That kind of excitement. And yet it runs so counter to how we run our lives. We grow up... Kudos to you for not forgetting that, for not putting it aside. Make room for it. (That's probably what that crow was screaming about to you.) :) It's a tough thing to convey, but you do it well, and we're with you, Tristan.
During your filming I imagined myself just wandering as you say and I love that aspect as well good for you for taking some time for yourself and thank you so much again for the beautiful beautiful videos
That was a raven, not a crow. Snow often does not last long in the Southwest, but it is really pretty while it’s there. This video makes me want to visit Arches some winter.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who balked at the Tower Arch 4x4 road. We rented a Jeep the week after Christmas and did this same route. I did not enjoy the initial uphill and walked a bit of the rest. It started snowing while we were at Tower Arch. We didn’t see other vehicles until Eye of the Whale. It was a great experience seeing lesser visited arches. Over the next two days we jeeped some of the White Rim and Chicken Corners. We also spent a day in Arches proper, which is always great in winter. The snow against the red rock is so beautiful.
Great video - love your joy at the end, exactly what I’m after when I hike and paint, that tired feeling of contentment and awe of the beauty of the world
It's such an amazing place! I was there last April, and I also had a crow that was giving me a stern talking to for a solid 15 minutes. Maybe they're territorial about those arches. My romantic side likes to think it's a reincarnation of an old medicine man coming to tell me about the errors of my ways. Thanks for all the great content!
In your last video you discussed your “plans” for this year. Now, you are discovering that “plans” sometimes aren’t as important as your peace of mind. Nice to see your satisfaction and enjoyment of this hike. Thanks for sharing. I will look for you at RTR.
You're visiting one of my favorite places on earth. Thank you for reminding me I must go back there this spring 2023. And it's great to see how you're enjoying your spontaneity. Love all the videos regardless but that portion of the "uncertainty" really brings through how much joy it brings you and would love to see you continue to experience that! I would follow your journey regardless of whether you're in your home with your beautfiul wife and fur baby or out in the wilderness planned or unplanned. Thanks for bringing us with you!
Arches NP is beautiful! I’ve never been but I feel like I’ve had a glimpse from this video. One day…one day. Glad you took some wander time. Thank you for sharing this!
I too love just wandering around off the beaten path in Arches, and Canyonlands for that matter. Can’t believe it’s been 25 yrs since I visited Tower Arch in April 98. Believe I saw the Henry Mtns in the distance in one of your pans. Wish I could be there now.
The happy/ high note you felt while aimlessly wandering in nature could be evidence that you communicated with God. It’s nice to know those moments can be created again with intention as well.
A good man knows his limitations. It is always exciting to explore new areas. Keep up the good work. It is fine to make others happy, but it is more important to make yourself happy.
Love the wanderlust aspect of the video. Clearly the Joy shows. I love the Moab area probably Canyonlands and dead horse more than Arches. But any thing you do is more exotic than what I would do. Thanks for sharing.
"Let your curiosity wander creatively" - that's a good way of saying things. Your videos, I think, do that. If only mine could be as good as yours. 🙂 Oh well.
Does your wife ever worry whenever she sees your videos of how close you come to the edge and all? I love your adventures and your videos are among the best. I, too, like going places where nobody has been or is very uncrowded. In watching your videos I have been to several places that you have shown and it's great. Thank you.
Lots of cool unnamed arches out there too. You can climb on the unnamed ones, also. BTW, there are NO crows in Arches. Those are all ravens. My favorite time of year to visit Arches is Winter. No crowd. Groove on.
I want to cast my vote for more wandering. I love the quiet, serenity, unpredictably, reverence, and awe that comes with wandering in nature.

I like wandering.
I like that Tower Arch is off the beaten path from the main part of the park.
The happy/ high note you felt while aimlessly wandering in nature could be evidence that you communicated with God. It’s nice to know those moments can be created again with intention as well.
That's what I love about the snow........such a quiet peace. Thank you. Simply spectacular 😁✌️
Walkabouts are good by me, specially that wonderful place, good times thank you ALL stay safe
Thank you.
There are many fascinating places to hike/walk in Utah with fascinating geographic areas.
Great video, *but* the best arch is Corona Arch, outside Moad, trailhead along the river.
Check it out, you will love it......
Yep- along with the nearby Paul Bunyons Potty
What a wonderful adventure - special thanks for the Herdina Park views!
Great shot @ 7:17
Glad you left the slip and near fall in. It makes your adventure feel very real.
Lots of cool unnamed arches out there too. You can climb on the unnamed ones, also.
BTW, there are NO crows in Arches. Those are all ravens.
My favorite time of year to visit Arches is Winter. No crowd.
Groove on.
Those zoom lens shots from the Garden were amazing.
