The mantis shrimp definitely earned the highest spot on the tier list. With a punch that can break through most shells, create a shockwave cavitation bubble on comtact, and briefly heat up the water around said bubble to temperatures nearly as hot as the surface of the sun, there's a reason sailors call them "the thumbsplitter." I think what makes crabs such a good build is that they are never bad. It doesn’t matter what the meta is, you can always crab. You can come back to the game after not playing for a decade, use the same exact build as you did before, and still be viable. Carcinization is the process of Convergent evolution in which many previously non-crab crustaceans have evolved from different paths into the shape of a crab, implying that one of the most ideal forms a crustacean can take is that of the crab. It's such a meta pick that even other players end up choosing to spec into similar stat ranges and builds as the crab build itself.
The greatness of the Crab is unlike that of all other creatures. The Carapace, strong and mighty, provides safety and respite for those who follow in the steps of our holiest of beasts. The Claws, our bastions of attack and triumph, crush those that seek to lead us astray. The Legs, like the trunks of the trees, carry our souls to greatness. All hail the beautiful nature of the Crustacean. All Hail The Crab.
@@foxmccloud2771 Funny you compare them to trees, those evolved from multiple kinds of plants as well (apples are technically roses, for example). Why there's such a difference between things like oak, pine, and palm trees.
The Crayfish build deserves more credit. Though they may be incredibly weak in some aspects, this is simply because they are min-maxing. They have put all their stats into poison resistance, allowing them to survive places most other aquatic builds cannot. Some CF players simply dig incredibly deep burrows and only surface when it rains to collect supplies. A notable glitch utilized by some users allows for cloning of themselves without need of a mate, leading to server crashes and game bugs. Louisiana crayfish, signal crayfish and the marbled crayfish are particularly strong CF builds.
7:54 Am I the only person here who calls these animals "Crawfish" instead of "Crayfish" or "Crawdads"? Also, I had an albino crawfish in my party once, and he was one of the funniest characters I ever met, always doing the weirdest things in his tank. (Random fact about my crawfish: His pale exoskeleton was vaguely see-through, and if you looked closely at his head, you could see the little floating orange orb that was his brain!)
Hardly matters when 99% of the time, it's a bird or a human simply scooping them out of the water. Tardigrades and roaches are known for surviving ionizing radiation, but that's hardly relevant when their greatest rivals are in their own weight class, often themselves.

as a crab main, i think many have already known about this glitch already, but if you spawn at the exact coordinates on the map, you'll be ending up on an island that is specifically made for crab rave, so it's a party non stop i'd like to think this was one of the devs easter eggs at one point and that crab mains just turned it into their own thing lmao
I kinda like it. It's interesting to see what rank you shell loot is generated as. I once dropped a Legendary ranked shell, but I could have sworn it didn't feel remotely legendary when I was alive.
Former planktonic main here with a fun fact! You don't have to be microscopic to be plankton, you just have to be bad at swimming. (The word "plankton" even comes from the Greek word for "drift" or "wander.") For example, some jellies are considered plankton because - just like the tiny guys we usually think of as plankton - they can't swim against a current. Planktonic gameplay is pretty fun, honestly. It can be RNG-heavy because you don't really control where you're going, but it's a seriously unique meta if you're used to playing nekton.
another thing to add is that actually a good portion of the builds we discuss normally in the marine server start as plankton, i guess so may players choose to play it as a main class is because of the nostalgia factor from when they started playing a different build
as a crab main, this list reminded me of this one legendary crab player that somehow managed to gain high intelligence, and I hear they're even running some sort of food business in a place where a bunch of other legendary sea creature mains who gained high intelligence stats are. The admins haven't found them yet. Really wild stuff
There are select crustaceans worthy of further shoutouts. A subspecies of pistol shrimp are working on developing their own eusocial colonies, but that’s still in beta. There are also small crabs that have moved away from aquatic and coastal biomes entirely by speccing into parental care and laying their eggs in notches in trees where puddles form. Again, still in the early stages, but certainly worth keeping an eye on. Some crabs are working on what are essentially lungs, allowing them to fill niches currently filled by insects while staying in a higher weight class.
@@gdjskkdd8192 Arthropods, not crustaceans. Insects all have six legs, crustaceans have ten, including claws. Lots of other differences, but calling them the same thing is like saying that a sea lion is a type of bear. They’re related, but very much their own thing.
There are also river crabs of the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, that can be semi aquatic, dig large barrows, and give birth to fully developed young, which cling on the mother to avoid being carried away by currents. They’re quite fast and strong as well.
I like that TierZoo sounded audibly amused when mentioning how frogs keep getting bodied by everything, I think it's the first time I've ever heard him be amused in one of his modern videos. Also dang nice to see a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon reference at 16:44.
I'll be honest, while I was amused at my own joke, normally I would have probably re-recorded that line. However because I've gotten a concerning number of comments lately accusing me of using an AI voice, I deliberately left in a subtle chuckle because to me knowledge that is not something an AI can convincingly replicate yet.
@@TierZoo Honestly, the concern is that people don't know what an AI voice actually sounds like. I've watched another channel, TheDuelLogs, that used an AI of their own voice for a bit while they had a throat illness, and despite their general cadence being quite similar to yours, it's easy to tell when it's the AI, even if you weren't paying attention to when they say it. A note about mantis shrimp builds. If you decide to run this build you’re going to need to pick a style of shrimp (spearer or boxer) and depending on what you pick you’ll essentially pigeonhole yourself into specific types of prey. For instance boxer mantis shrimps have to spend a considerable amount of time lining up the correct shot to crack shells, which is why they go for slower prey where as on the other side of things the spearer shrimp essentially walk around with a loaded crossbow and have to shoot from the hip the entire time at softer targets like small fish or other arthropods. Just some advice for players looking to tech into mantis shrimp builds
Mmmmmm Since crustaceans have pulled off asymmetry before, what if they did it again? Have both overpowering blunt and piercing damage on the same build?
Crabs are an example of healthy game design, they're never overpowered, have a large variety of variable options and despite they're low skill floor, they require a lot of game knowledge and skill to make it far when conpared to more dominant builds
6:10 A very cool thing with the pistol shrimp’s projectile is that the centre of those bubbles reach absolutely insane temperatures and pressures because of how the pressure waves ricochet in the cavity. It’s so impressive that it’s inspired some human players to test the mechanic themselves as an exploit for pulling off cold fusion!

At some point, you're going to have to give us a deep dive of how factions and sub-factions work. Its also confusing to understand how traits and playstyles get inherited from the multiple layers of alignment.
Then there's Viruses, which are the closest things to being alive without actually being alive. Viruses are often confused with the three microbe factions: Bacteria, Archaea, and Protozoa. Viruses are actually a bonus "faction" consisting of modernized versions of the game’s pre-alpha characters and their variants. You can unlock each core virus build by either becoming infected by that specific build and surviving or (if you are playing as a microbe) killing that specific build in combat. After unlocking the base virus character, you can upgrade and diversify into its many variants. My personal favorite virus build is the Bacteriophage, which I unlocked after winning a really tough duel against a T4 while playing as an E coli bacterium. Afterwards, it was actually really fun to play as an anti-disease, and I was able to farm tons of XP from defending my human host. A really crazy friend of mine spent countless hours of playtime as a chimp for the sole purpose of unlocking the Ebola virus, the deadliest virus build in the game. He actually died from it three times before finally surviving an infection and thus unlocking the build. Its signature ability to induce the Hemorrhagic Fever status effect is so overpowered and will ensure a KO if your victim doesn’t have any health buffs such as access to medicine.

Sounds like a crab or hermit crab build that found a way to spec into mantis shrimp attack power would land solidly in S tier. Probably not quite ban worthy as the mantis shrimp relies on water physics for it's attack power, so that attack would have more limited utility on land. However having land as a traversable option to help avoid bad aquatic matchups, and in the case of a hermit crab extra shell scavenging options, would probably be of high value to a build like this.
The Pistol Shrimp build is quite underrated: when paired with a goby the defence is quite impenetrable, and the bubble explosion is normally a one-hit kill.

@@windhelmguard5295 Spiders and Scorpions are arachnids and are not crustaceans. Myriapoda (millipedes, centipedes, etc.) are more closely related to crustaceans than arachnids are.
This is true but kind of misleading. It's like saying whales are a type of fish because they evolved from tetrapods and tetrapods evolved from fish. It's true but phylogenetic trees aren't the end-all-be-all of taxonomy
The core crustacean build hasn't changed much since its inception. Some say they are weak, but their mainstay just goes to show something about them is going well
You forgot one big advantage isopods have. Isopods are the only arthopods that can biphasic molt. Which means they can molt in halfs instead all at once which allows them to remain mobile while molting. Isopods also have extreme tollerance of ammonia gas and heavy metals. I say they should be C teir.
With the isopod builds, I’d like to defend them saying you left out there abilities that let them help top tiers like ants by cleaning in exchange for living in the anthills.
Isopods belong in hell. As someone currently studying marine biology, I've learned a lot about parasitism, which itself is quite disturbingly fascinating, but nothing disturbs me greatly than isopods fusing to a fish's tongue. Having a parasite as my tongue... I'd rather become a zombie host for a parasite, by which there are some real fucked up stuff...
When I first started playing the game as a primate main, I could never figure out the quick time interactions and kept accidentally entering melee with crawdad players. They do drop some delicious loot tho
I just like to say that Annelida, Onychophora, and Tardigrada are completely different phylums. Although the last 2 are more closely related than Annelida (the grandphylum Panarthropoda).
The fix for the phylogenetic tree would be changing arthropod to ecdysozoa, change annelid into nematode (since annelids are lophotrochozoans), and then show arthropods as a part of panarthropoda which you mentioned contained tardigrades and onychophorans. As far as im aware, the lower part of the tree is also messed up. This is because trilobites and chelicerates lack mandibles, while crustaceans, hexapods, and myriapods all belong to mandibulata, while the tree he shows indicates loss of mandibles on the brach with those 2
Yeah I'm glad someone noticed that, being that he placed the annelids in "Arthropoda", that "Arthropoda" probably refers to "Articulata", although that taxon is obsolete and as mentioned it would be best to put Ecdysozoa but without the annelids. Oh and the trilobites with chelicerates (Arachnomorpha) is also controversial, according to what I read it may be valid but not 100%, because there is another hypothesis that puts them with the mandibulates forming Antennulata.
Dude I love to see other builds. As a rat main in a human play-through I do want to see what the other classes have to offer may do a crab build next time!
@@greninja2525 I agree that the Pistol Shrimp has decent high offensive stats. At best, I would say it's at solid B tier due to its poor eyesight. Hence, why it relies on having a companion.
@HassDennis But it makes up for it with its powerful claws and hard shell. It also hides itself from predators through camouflage by covering itself with sponges and anemones. However, because of the depth in which they live, they have quite a few natural predators. Another thing to mention is that it's monstrous in size. The *only time* it is vulnerable is when it has just finished molting since its exoskeleton is in the process of hardening. That is why I would still say it's S-tier.
@@winterchill365 "Most adults do not camouflage between sponges" I did research on them, but now I just agree even more. It definitely belongs in S-tier, even if they can't kill a human. I am so in love with your editing. I love all the video game references and quick jokes that fly by, and it also helps me absorb the material better by relating it to video games. I have an idea for a build, it has a high intelligence stat and medium to low stealth, it specks into powerful claws and a powerful whip like tail, with the claws, it creates a burrow, and inside the burrow, it sets a trap involving dirt, and when the target approaches, the build starts using intimidation abilities so it didnt charge in, then it whips its tail against the wall caving in the entrance with dirt suffocating the target, and if it escapes, too bad, if it escapes into the burrow, the claws are enough to finish it off. How does it bait the target, 1, it catches insects to bait builds, 2, its low stealth stat. And you're wondering how is it going to cave in the dirt? It creates something similar to a turmite mound and part of it goes in the ground, the turmite mound is not secure enough and can cave in, but not so the whole burrow caved in. I think this will be a A-B tier build. If you read this far, please reply or like.
We are blessed with not only a casual geographic video but also a tierzoo video!? Love all your content, thanks for all the cool fun knowledge about animals.
Great tier list! By sticking to the main crustacean groups you sadly couldn't talk about the true S-tier among the crustaceans, the decorator crab. They have all the benefits of a true crab but invested as wel in structures on their carapace that act like velcro. This allows them to attach things in their environment to their carapace to fully blend into their environment, highly increasing their stealth score while retaining their high defenses. Like hermit crabs they can attach anemones to their carapace, but in addition, they can add razor sharp coral, and algea covered rocks for a passive food scource. Their only real weakness, aside from plankton stage like most crustaceans, is that they have to molt cuz then they have to leave their disguise, but as soon as they harden, they can repurpose the tools from their previous exoskeleton.

In time, all shall become crab
Imagine if crab armor was roach level. They’d be indestructible
Damn never knew that! I mostly know them from my human play through since cracking the shells open for food gave a massive morale boost.

Former planktonic main here with a fun fact! You don't have to be microscopic to be plankton, you just have to be bad at swimming.

1st time here, your way of explaining is interesting and fun to listen to, which makes it easier to understood imo

This is because trilobites and chelicerates lack mandibles, while crustaceans, hexapods, and myriapods all belong to mandibulata, while the tree he shows indicates loss of mandibles on the brach with those 2
@@bobbob-fr1jc Agreed

also wasn't it recently shown that hexapoda should be in the pancrustacea clade
1:09 doesn't seem correct
Yeah I'm glad someone noticed that, being that he placed the annelids in "Arthropoda", that "Arthropoda" probably refers to "Articulata", although that taxon is obsolete and as mentioned it would be best to put Ecdysozoa but without the annelids. Oh and the trilobites with chelicerates (Arachnomorpha) is also controversial, according to what I read it may be valid but not 100%, because there is another hypothesis that puts them with the mandibulates forming Antennulata.

The Japanese Spider Crab and the Coconut Crab deserve to be at S tier because of their monstrous size and strength. They have few natural predators.
What about the pistol shrimp? Decently high offensive stats
@@greninja2525 I agree that the Pistol Shrimp has decent high offensive stats. At best, I would say it's at solid B tier due to its poor eyesight. Hence, why it relies on having a companion.
But the Japanese spider crab was so huge that it couldn't properly move, right? Wouldn't that be a bit bad?
@HassDennis But it makes up for it with its powerful claws and hard shell. It also hides itself from predators through camouflage by covering itself with sponges and anemones. However, because of the depth in which they live, they have quite a few natural predators. Another thing to mention is that it's monstrous in size. The *only time* it is vulnerable is when it has just finished molting since its exoskeleton is in the process of hardening. That is why I would still say it's S-tier.

If you read this far, please reply or like.

that clip of the isopod running up that dude's arm scared the shit out of me
Great tier list!
