I completely agree with the Christopher thing, it’s frustrating when you know an author knows how to write some pretty fantastic reactions to grief and then they just…don’t?? Tbh other than that issue I really liked the book and I think I finally just settled into the last hours being mostly a period piece situation, but chain of iron was definitely the high point of the series for me too.
Yes that was totally it! I just feel like it was brushed off when we have seen how CC has dealt with grief previously 🥺🥲 I’m so happy you liked it!! And that’s true I hadn’t looked it at from that perspective. Chain of Iron was perfection 😩🫶🏻
I think I was actually more invested in chain of thorns than chain of iron but I think it's because I literally only read this series for the characters and only have a little interest in the plot. Like when I read chain of iron I mostly just loved the part where it focused on the everyday life of James and Cordelia when they got married. So I think that's why I actually really enjoyed this book because I was so invested in the characters and not very invested in the plot at all.
We deserved so much more from the Cordelia/Matthew time in Paris!! But yes totally agree with everything you said. I love these characters but even so, I was still feeling like it was so fricken repetitive and there was not enough plot.
Yesss I wanted more Cordelia x Matthew- if you’re going to include a love triangle I want to feel the angst and feelings for both people the character is pursuing. And yes 100% the plot was lacking, it was all character drama until the end 🙃
SPOILERS BELOW! I had the same feelings as you about this book. There was way too much pointless drama in the beginning. The book could have been 200 pages shorter. And I also felt like she killed Christoffer off because he didn't really have a love interest yet. And that made me really sad. He was such a sweetheart! Also, I tought it was weird that Christoffer defended Grace more than Jesse? I found it weird that Jesse wasn't more understanding. He knows how abusive Tatiana was to Grace! Anyway, I loved your video! You have a new subscriber :)
I have finished so I have returned and I’m glad to see everyone in the comments agreeing that Christopher’s death was extremely stupid like I am genuinely angry about it! I didn’t even like him that much but it didn’t add anything to the story. The characters barely acknowledge it like 2 of them are literally sitting in hell so I don’t know they could cry about it, we get a little from Anna, the rest seems to move on startlingly quick as if a chunk of pages is missing. We don’t even see Cecily or Gabriel react to it or his funeral. It didn’t spur the characters on or even make it more difficult since Grace figured out the message thing pretty easily. I am literally pretending it didn’t happen and the book still turns out THE EXACT SAME. Also don’t get me started on the fact a poisoned blade to the shoulder killed him in seconds but James can stab himself in the heart and survive 🙄 Not to mention you’ve already done that Cassandra like with Clary stabbing Jace and when Tessa “stabs” herself in Clockwork Angel.
Also it felt really inconsistent with everything we know about these characters. Grace was one of my favourite POVs in CoI because the angst of her story and the struggle was great but none of that came back in this book. Jesse and Lucie I ADORED in the second book so much that I said they might be my favourite ship and then I barely cared in here. Cordelia honestly felt very whiny. Lucie and Cordelia barely got time as friends in this series (when I was so excited for female parabatai finally and then it didn’t even happen in the book. Only a short story). Matthew and James were probably the worst parabatai she’s written and I remember when I first met them in Tales of the Shadowhunter Academy I fell in love. I also thought their powers disappearing was kinda stupid like Tessa doesn’t stop being a warlock cause her father is dead so why would it take her kids powers away.
One last thing my least favourite Shadowhunter book is either this or QoAaD and that scares me that the last two finales she’s written have disappointed me so much so I’m terrified for Wicked Powers since that is the Shadowhunter finale (supposedly)
you are so valid for all of this. 100% the characters and the relationships did NOT feel the same as they did in chain of iron!! for sure one of my least fav CC books, i’m sorry you were disappointed as well :(
100%!!!!!!! I thought this would be the best thing EVER since I loved chain of gold and chain of iron and thought this would be my favorite series. This is exactly how I felt with TDA and then QOOAD turned out to be a big disappointment
Hi! I have a problem with my Chain of Thorns copy.. Do you have a all black page at page number 545? Or do you have a fanart? I don’t understand if my edition is flawed 😟 Same thing with page 552
I have been struggling to decide if I want to get back into Cassandra Clare but seeing reviewer's disappointment with her recent books... I'm not sure its worth it. Especially since the books are like 1000 pages long.
totally understandable!!! it’s definitely a nostalgia thing to keep reading her books for me. i think her writing has gotten a lot better over time, but also it does get a bit redundant being in the universe book after book.
And it’s weird that you said this was the MOST disappointing series, yet her previous series has the most cliche, annoying love triangle, fake dating (Emma and Mark, I hated the love relationships in TDA). I really dislike her other CC series, but this series, in my opinion, has amazing characters, DIVERSE characters (which I love), that I can relate to. Her other series were just… YA characters I see, with dull and cliche attitude.
Most disappointing because of how much I loved the first two books, not because this book was bad. I just had such high expectations for the conclusion that just didn’t follow through for me. I loved the diversity of this cast and am so happy you found characters to relate to!
Spoiler-ish: If Christopher dies, how is he supposed to marry Grace and be a grandad? Did Cassandra forget the family tree she made?😂😂😂 and I read something where it she also heavily toned the dramatic stuff in the book during the lockdown. Might be why it’s such a letdown? But I don’t know
@@merreads I wonder if she’s going to make a new family tree now because she invalidated the current one with this new release. And why does she have to hurt Grace like that? Grace isn’t my favorite character in the world, but she’s one of the most unique in the Shadowhunters world imo.
I disagree, I read the third book, and now I feel sad, and I feel like I had to say goodbye to people that I love, so much. I know some will dislike it, especially when a certain character died, all of a sudden, but in my opinion, I think CC did this book perfect! And, out of all CC series in the shadow hunters world, The Last Hours will ALWAYS be my favourite. I really hated the love triangles in her other series, but in my opinion, I loved it here, it wasn’t cliche, it wasn’t annoying, it was real, and perfect, I know some will complain (mostly because they wanted Lucie and Math and Jesse, from previous comments), but I loved it! And, I like Grace, because before I hated her, but I really like her redemption arc, she was amazing. And, of course, Daisy, my girl, I love, and James, and my baby, Math. I just love this book, it was perfect!❤
I’m really happy you loved it!!! I wanted to so bad because this series had been my favorite up until this point. I liked the love triangle until this book but it just didn’t work for me cause of how strong Cordelia’s feelings were for James, it just felt like Matthew never had a chance 🥺
People are just mad because 1. Christopher. 2. They hated that Daisy was the Center of the love triangle (they wanted it to be Lucie). 3. They hate diverse characters. There, I said it.
No people are mad because the story genuinely makes no sense. The whole trilogy is about secrets that the characters keep but why would any of the characters keep these secrets of there so close. The trope of someone having a secret and not telling anyone because there afraid the other person will hate them, makes no sense. If the merry thieves are this close why would they keep these secrets. Secondly this series is too similar to it's predecessor: new girl comes to town and a pair of parabati love her and then the main dude gets the girl but the other dude accepts this. End of book 3 build up the Lucie running away part to be so big then it's solved in like what 100 pages. Also when a book has like 4 intense romances it ruins them imo. I dosent feel like James and Cordelia (who are the main characters) have anything special coz well alll the other characters have the same thing. The trilogy would have been much better if it explored something new in any way at all. Like why not have Matthew be an antagonist???? Why not have him die to save James or something? That's the main problem with this series compared to the other : the rest have something new in this universe but this one doesn't at all.
@@mikiekearns8574 I agree, I love that there are diverse characters! But that doesn't take away from the fact that there are things about the plot that I didn't enjoy. I will still gladly read the wicked powers when it comes out though!

Same page! Sorry it didn’t work for you too 🥺 and thank you so much! ❤️
What I Didn’t understand why was there another Belial , what will happen in the wicked powers ? , what about the whole family tree ?
You: “I’m assuming you’ve read chain of iron and chain of gold. If you haven’t, leave.”
Me: ready for spoilers and tea🧎♀️☕️
