I have to add this to my bucket list when I am back up that way. Looks like a beautiful place.
Definitely a beautiful and historic place to visit. Thanks for watching!
I live outside of Charlotte and drive to the Blowing Rock / Moses Cone area frequently. One of the most beautiful parts of the world. My favorite trail at Moses Cone is the hike up towards the 360 tower. It takes you past the grave of the founding Cone family and into amazing scenery as you get higher. Then finally the tower for the view. Great video!
Thanks for watching, and glad you enjoyed the video! We'll have to check that trail out the next time we visit!
I've always enjoyed my visits to the Flattop Manor. There used to be a pretty nice store inside.
There still is. We really enjoyed our visit. Thanks for watching!
I was just there at peak leaf-change season. It was quite memorable, more so for my aging mother who is a huge fan of the "Mitford" book series by Jan Karan. The Cone mansion was the inspiration for memorable mansion in those books. One of my favorite bits of the park was that Moses Cone was an avid apple breeder, and had hundreds of trees on his property, but most especially, the orchards used to cover the slope from the house down to the lake. It must have been quite a sight to wake up to. He was constantly cross-breeding the trees to produce new varieties. The park rangers told me many of the descendant apple trees still grow on the property elsewhere, and visitors are allowed to gather up to a bushel (?) a day for free from the ground as the apples fall. However, they stress that the apples must be washed thoroughly, because Cone used the pesticides of his day, and they contained lead, which still saturates the grounds.
Very interesting on the Apple Orchards, we knew he grew apples, but didn't know the extent of the orchards and breeding! Glad you had a great time and that is was so memorable for your mother. It's a beautiful place, full of of history. Thanks for watching!
