I want to pass the ocean rescue test. 550 yards or 500 meters in sub 10:00. It’s an all out effort to swim 100 yards in 2:00. Tonight my main workout was 100 yards x 5 reps on 3:00 intervals. The best I could do was 2:08 ( I have done 1:59 and 1:58 a few weeks ago so it’s possible). I need to get down to at least 1:45 pace, better yet 1:30 pace and hold it over 550 yards.

Katie swims what is called "gallop" style, or I called it "loping" when I first saw it with Michael Phelps in his first Olympics. It does go back to Matt Biondi. I did find an old clip of Mark Spitz, and while he was breathing every other pull, he was not swimming gallop style. The clip you showed of Caleb is the 50 meter sprint which is a straight arm pull and recovery which no one can sustain beyond about 50 meters due to the power required to swim this way. All of the male swimmers use gallop style for distances 100 meters and over, and some of the women do. Ariarne Titmus swims a more traditional style of freestyle with even cadence and she breathes on a 2, 2, 3 or 4 count. What separates gallop, aka "hybrid" style for those who believe in shoulder vs hip driven style, is the uneven cadence of the arm pull. This results in the slight bobbing/porpoising action while swimming. The head lifts out of the water slightly more than normal freestyle and the head and shoulders go under. The breathing arm side stays extended for a bit/pause, and you breathe every other arm stroke. There is less drag when you go under, no surface tension which is minimal, and supposedly the bow wave is greatly reduced. As some one who has to breathe every other arm pull, this style works great for me, and it is also how I swim my over arm side stroke. To date, no one has done a side by side comparison of Katie and Ariarne. Ariarne swims with an even cadence pull. With the gallop style, on the breathing side pull, both hands are in the front quadrant, which is typical of the even cadence freestyle. With the non breathing side arm, it is past the half way point when the breathing side arm recovers and enters the water. For what it's worth, I figure Ariarne beats Katie in the 200 and 400, but can't beat Katie in the 800 or 1500 because her style of swimming causes her to go into oxygen debt, and once you get behind, you can not catch up till you stop.

Ps in answer to your question-I taught myself breaststroke when I left school (because they just dumped the non swimmers at the shallow end there). I did triathlon with breaststroke (painful!) then hurt my knee and had surgery so was no longer able to do breaststroke so started freestyle while my knee was recovering (used pull buoy a LOT) and just love it. My goal is to be able to swim long distance with ease and to look and feel super smooth. It’s so technical and drives me a bit crazy but I am obsessed with it. I find it totally frustrating that one length can feel easy and be fast and another slow and sticky and I have no idea why. Love your videos (as you know) and your infectious enthusiasm. One day I’d love to swim open water but I’m not strong enough yet.

Does it look like that Ledecky, during her 1 beat kick ,she used her right leg as the tail end if her long axis so that her head and her left leg spiraling around that axis?
