- On 31st August, 2015, to celebrate his 70th birthday Van played a live gig on Cyprus Avenue in his native Belfast, Northern Ireland as part of the Eastside Arts Festival.
The middle-class suburban Cyprus Avenue was made famous in his song of the same name on the Astral Weeks album.
Van was born in a small house in the working-class Hyndford Street, just a few blocks away from the Avenue.
I'm 61 and had Van playing as l brought my two children into this world, they've grown up with his music as their kids are now.

My parent’s are from Ireland - one from the north the other from the south - I feel so proud of this Celtic giant

He's a complete gift and we should all continue to remember that. For me he's an inspiration.

No movement in the throng. No noise from the crowd. Total rapture and a total focus on the man, on the teacher, on the words of the Poet, performer, and writer of lyrics. Makes me want to stand up and shout Hallelujah!!

The son of Ireland tending to his sheep. Reverence and godly love for one of their own who walks amongst them in a human form. Every tone dropped on them from his lips and the skins, strings, and amplifiers detonated in their inner ears as vibrations that will be recalled for weeks and years later....to elicit that sweet elixir of sound and rhyme. He is a master in word play and sound. They understood his time among them is short. Fifty-sixty years he has never faded. Who can match this and say it was their pen who wrote the lyrics and created the score? He is a once in a lifetime artist. I cry everytime i listen to him and i don't know why

I used to 'harvest'/steal apples from Cyprus Avenue in my youth - Van was my near neighbour - His nextdoor neighbours the 'Carters' were my playmates and occasionally Van himself used to join us! - I lived at 66 Abetta Parade.

Van has been with me from teenage years in Ireland and around the world for 30 plus years.
Just breathtaking. The man is amazing.
The crowd, shoulder to shoulder, enjoying a beautiful evening and a great concert!

It was amazing experience to be there about 40 feet from the stage the setting was magical
I think this is one of his best performances ever, and he is 70 years old. Wish I could have been there to see this magical moment.

part of the reason why this becomes so magical is perhaps that Van is improvising part of the lyrics. He creates it there and then. the audience senses that
I have been mesmerised by Van's music for over 40 years now. If there was only one artist I was allowed to listen to there would be no hesitation in making my selection.

Dr. Steve Wexler It's up to us to bring this mans music to the youngsters.My children were reared on the music of Sir Van Morrison.They have been to as many concerts as humanly possible.Iv seen him 55 times and hopefully one more this summer at Liverpool Feis.He makes life worth living.

Astral Weeks was the soundtrack of my first years in London after suffering my second bipolar breakdown in 1971 when I didn’t know what was the matter with me. The music I listened to in the hippy hotel on Belsize Avenue has stayed with me ever since. God bless Van The Man for being an integral part of the soundscape of my life.

I only know Belfast from “ the news”, how great it is to see the happiness, enjoyment, respect and self discipline of all those there, and to be able to hear every word! And the colour, that is inspirational, long may it last.

Dunno how I stumbled on this but I 'm glad I did Astral weeks is one of my most important records that is part of my life
We had this on vinyl when our kids were young. We lived in a little wooden cottage we build ourselves in Timaru (New Zealand). We could see the mountains and the sunsets from there. Our daughter was two. She would play among the wildflowers on the hillside. (She is getting married in January.) Hearing this now sends shivers down my spine. This is awesome, thanks.

I want to recognize Dana Masters, the L.A. backup singer on this. She is one of the featured stars in the film "20 Feet From Stardom." No one knows their names but they are a priceless part of live music.

It certainly is, and this clip just blows me away, and not just for the man but all the musicians (the intro is amazing) and backing singer
Dana Masters as well. I suppose while I'm here I should thank the BBC production crew and the Eastside Arts Festival organizers. I'm such an ass licker, but I've never viewed and enjoyed any clip as often as this one.

I listened to Avalon Sunset just a few weeks ago. I can't think of anyone else that evokes both emotion and imagination through their music as well as he does. Whether you've been to a place he sings about or not, after he's finished you feel like you have. Orangefield does that for me. I have about 10 CD's that I never put away. Avalon Sunset, Tupelo Honey, and Poetic Champions Compose are 3 of the 10. I'll probably bring Moondance to join the others after this.
His music is timeless and otherworldly and some of the most beautiful ever written.

Takes me way, way back, too, to my Belfast childhood and to Radio Lux and AFN late at night under the bedclothes.

What an outstanding performance and a very very rare live version. Stories from his childhood that he somehow makes feel like ours, or at least reflect on our best long since past memories. You will be hard pressed to find a more mesmerized and focused audience anywhere. Watch as the band just plays around him and knowing just what to play and when.
I always though Cyprus ave. was across the Golden Gate bridge where Van live for a while. Love ya man. Been a fan of Van since Them.
To be a brilliant musician you must be also a story teller and a poet to get your story across when you are lucky enough to be able to do that you then add music to your poems or story's and then you are a genius Van the man is that GENIUS

Yes Van is the man great rhythms, in his voice. He’s a hell of a man and singer.
I have to ask you wise people and knowledgable people out there, is my 1st cousin Van not one of the greatest guitar players of times, he must be because he plays his guitar on some of the most stunning, brilliant and meaningful songs of all times and has done so over the past 60 years or so. I also love that Van is wearing that hat I gave to him for his birthday, at first he said it was too flashy for him but did he changed his mind

He's my favorite musician by far.....but I misjudged him for many years. Thinking that he had lost the magic 'it'. In around 1987, I thought he had lost 'it'. The inexpressable sound of being in the moment. I was wrong. Van has been doing it all this time. This video proves it. And the humour he's supposed to not have!!
