Hi Kelly! Now a month has gone by and wondering how awesome NFT's have been for you. I'm a musician and not really grasping what makes NFT's so awesome. I want to sell some of my original solo piano pieces. Does it mean I auction one song at a time and then I lose the rights to my song? I had 2 hour long albums manufactured by Oasis long ago and want to see if I can make some income as I sold 4,000 copies and never toured or advertised. I think people will like it but need to learn how to do this on my own.

You glossed over the Ethereum gas fees which I think is a bit misleading. $100 bucks isn't even close. Try $300-$400. You have to pay to sell your NFTs on the Ethereum network.

Great question. I think including a copy of your song is a great idea. The odds of someone attempting to upload your work as their own are very low. Someone could just as easily rip the song from your Spotify page, download it from iTunes, or steal it from UA-cam as well. I think including it is a good idea, and I wouldn’t worry too much about the notion of theft.

I try to think of it in terms of what happens in the physical world with rare items. It's just a digital version of that. Take the Mona Lisa for example. @@tomdupreeiii Hi! i think you just proved our point. in digital there is never only one, all copies are perfect. like we said we think this is hype for young cats who grew up in a all digital world. musicians would be much better served with the creation of a true anti piracy copy protection for digital audio files. Question…how do you stop someone else from uploading the same digital file. For example…if a musician and the original creator puts their song as an mp3 up and mints it as an NFT. But then another person finds the same song on the internet downloads it and then uploads it as an NFT as well? What stops this from happening?
Great video dude! I hate the concept of NFT's but I can see how it might make sense for some people. Downsides of NFT's are that they're absolutely horrible for the environment, it takes an insane amount of energy to produce NFT's due to the mining required to process the transactions (one NFT with 2 transactions can consume as much energy as a laptop running for OVER A YEAR, and a single ETH transaction consumes as much energy as what the average American uses over 3 days). Its also nothing more than buying the digital version of an autographed file, people can still make copies that will be identical to the original they just won't have the certificate that says they own the original. In my mind its basically either a form of support for a content creator, and an investment. If you really love an artist and believe in them you might want to support them by buying an NFT from them, and if they do really well in the future that NFT might be worth more than you bought it for so in that case its a win-win (aside from the environment). In cases where you can't resell the NFT and make money with it, there is no real value to the consumer other than the fuzzy feeling they get from supporting their artist which is totally cool since thats all donations are anyways - it'd be like if your friend hand draws a trading card and you want to support their art by buying it from them. On the environmental note, people are working on reducing this impact and it hasn't stopped me from owning investments in various cryptocurrencies, but it is quite a large problem. I might be wrong, but I feel like this is a fad that will die off, at least in the mainstream. The average person doesn't use crypto and doesn't understand it, and a lot of people are afraid of it. I just can't imagine the average consumer is ever going to get into this stuff when there are so many easier solutions available, especially when most people already understand they could support their favorite artists by buying their stuff from their website but still use Spotify because its way more convenient.
Dude thanks for this great comment! I think the ultimate use case for cryptocurrencies still remains to be seen for sure. It’s still very much a space of mathematicians and computer scientists, not the average joe. Having said that, I think it’s likely that digital currency will play a major role in the fabric of society within the next 10-20 years, especially as computing grows more powerful and efficient. Fortunately, Ethereum, the dominate platform, is working hard on scalability issues, which should decrease environmental impact by a wide margin. Because it is definitely a big issue at present. More than anything, I am super intrigued to watch this space develop. I believe there is a lot of promise in the basic infrastructure that’s been laid. Certainly NFTs are in a bubble right now, and the hype is sure to subside, but I believe many of these problems will be solved over time as crypto grows closer to mainstream adoption. It will definitely have to cross these hurdles to win in the court of public opinion.
