BMW/Mini CD Multichanger 'No Disc' fix

- I started recording this 'after' I had disassembled it and put it into the boot to see what was going on with it after I applied the silicon grease.
This is how it 'should' behave in normal operations. The "No Disc" error happens when it can't slide over the cd trays due to dried out gears.
Hope it helps some, saved us tearing up the front console just to swap the stereo for the time being that's for sure.
Thanks to Ben for his elevator music used in the interludes.

Thank you sooooo much! All I did was grease up the key areas that you mentioned after dusting away some residue from dried lubricant from the manufacturer and I have my CD back. Spared me of spending $$$ buying a used one when mine is fine. Many thnx again!
Glad to hear this has came in use. Would add that the base of the mechanism that deals with the travel of CDs (the bottom side when in place in boot) also has some tendency to have it's washers / slider parts dry out so put a dab on there too and that will refresh the CD loading which in turn will prevent change disc stalls.
Thanks - With your help I was able to fix the stacker in my 2000 E240 Benz. Now working again.
Worth watching just for the elevator music and the bit where he drops a screwdriver, but more than all that a really good video on how the CD changer works and how to fix the horrible "No Discs" problem.
Appreciated feedback indeed :)
your video helped me to fix my cd changer in my e46 . thank you !
Most welcome! Glad this is still helping folks out there! I keep thinking nah, it's not needed, maybe take it down, but then I get a wee note like this that happily proves me wrong!
This video is still getting changers working in 2018! Thanks dude.
You're most welcome, glad to hear it's still un-sticking folks multi-changers these days!
Tried it on my E39, I couldn't believe it would be so easy, but it works perfectly now ! Thank you very much for your video !
I found this video very helpful ,a great presentation by a good guy .
Hi James - AKA STAR MAN :)
Just wanted to commend you on the advice and video - THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH,
I'd had the same problem as many of the posters on here,
Had already called BMW Parts for a quote for a new CD Changer, and as my system was so 'old' (in fact I bought this one in February 2009), as a replacement for the previous one.
The best price they could offer was around £350.00 before VAT!
Anyway, had attempted to disassemble the unit before watching your video, and stopped short of taking the metal case off, as there was some resistance. So I put it all back together again, and was going to make do without CD music in my beemer :(
Then saw your video.
And followed it step by step, almost.
In fact, took the metal case off by pulling it out at the sides, and nothing has broken or snapped.
Greased it up where you suggested,
Then I tested it (without the metal case), before re-assembling it, and it works a treat
Have greased it up more, and re-installed it.
Just done a road test, and all seems fine.
Came back on to this site to thank you, BUT have just seen your additional post on greasing the bottom.
Will I have to disassemble again, or can I do this by just ejecting the CD cartridge?
Anyway, thanks again,
Raji
Awesome - problem solved in 30 mins ..... thanks for the video (content, quality and great explanation).
Thanks, glad to hear it's still helping folks keep it working for that bit longer.
Excellent video. Got my sticking changer working again. Thanks for the post
Glad to hear! Thanks for letting me know it's still useful. :)
I see this is from a long time ago, glad you kept it on here, Top banana, I followed your vid and my changer is working again, Prodigy full blast, nothin better. Cheers 🖒
Brill to hear hope it held out longer than ours. :)
Worked for me! Thanks mate! :)(In fact, getting the CD Changer out of the centre armrest in an X3 was the hardest part)
Glad to hear you've had success, pulling the thing out from an arm rest sounds like it's nightmare. Hope it lasts for a wee bit longer.
derin111 can you share with me how did you take the changer out from the armrest please? Thanks!
@@FrankFanghk Hi Frank, I'm sorry I can't remember exactly how I did it and since my wife has left taking that car with her!
I do remember that I had to first remove part of the centre console for sure. Maybe search X3 centre console removal first on Google rather than CD changer removal?
Good luck.
@@FrankFanghk Actually Frank, I've found a detailed guide. If you give me an email address, I can send you the pdf.
Derin
@derin111 hey mate, have you sent it? Cuz I haven’t receive it yet
Awesome tips&video mate! Got my unit working again :) Cheeeeeers!
Glad to hear it worked for you! Bear in mind this may 'stop' working simply due to age but for now enjoy!
Perfect! Just sorted mine using this. Cheers!
I should add that this is more a temporary fix than a long term solution. The older the changer unit the more likely this will fail again.
We've torn ours out now and replaced the head unit but I'll keep this here for those with similar problems and glad it's helped. :)
+James Murray Thanks for the video. I have dead pixels on my head unit, so I think I will just replace the head unit and remove the CD changer. It sounds like that's what you did too? Which after market head unit did you buy?
We wound up with a Sony USB CD unit, bear in mind you should check to see if what ever you buy has a compatible loom on the back of it since the BMW cables are that little bit special if I recall correctly.
thank you mate ,,,your video was very helpful to me ,after i watched it i fixed my cd magazine my self,,,,,thanx again
good job dude, just applied your fix to mine and hey presto all working again,, thanks
Hi, great video that got my player working all until I put it into the last casing to screw back into the mini (2005). After that the motor stopped pulling the disks out but it did go into position for each disk and whirred a little bit, as if it was trying to check the cd but was too weak. Very frustrating as I can only get it playing again after taking it all apart again, and I can’t screw it back into the boot! Any suggestions?
Video worked perfectly .
Thanks! Great to hear it's still helping folks after all this time!
This reminds me of how I fixed an Amiga500 drive once, that would not load discs anymore, just had to remove harden lubricate from the moving metal parts.
Hi, Bro! Did all this, but now discs even dont spinning in the changer. After 6 sec. it says no disc, any advice?
Solved. Rubbed the lens with alcohol, works fine now.
@@Hellafast2uDude that's a great tip, thanks for replying here with your solution when that happened
In my case when my BMW e39 CD changer stopped working I took magazine out and removed every CD and then reinserted magazine. After turning CD player on it obviously displayed the "NO DISCS" message. Turned it off, put CDs back and turned CD player on. All discs are back in action and playing just fine.
I know it might not be everyone's solution but in some cases it obviously works.
💿🔊 🤔
SOLVED. problem is not lubrication, its the electric motor that moves mecanics. motor for verticl and horizontal movement. sometimes both motors.
Thanks for relaying this info, no doubt this may help others who've had limited success reviving their unit.
Now bear in mind this isn't a good as new fix, but I hope it gets yours back and operational for you for a reasonable amount of time.
Thanks.. It actually worked!!!
Glad to hear it! Hope it eeks out a little bit more time for your unit!
In mine, the "finger" that pushes and pulls the CD tray is stuck. The correspondent big gear does not rotate when I try with my finger. Any advice? Thanks.
Hm.. maybe tap with screwdriver and hammer to knock it free? Was pretty stuck when I recorded this many years ago. Can't begin to imagine it's condition now.
@@TxRxFx thank you for your advice. All the hammers I have are too big for clockwork... :)
@@JoaoBasso10 understood. Maybe leave drop of carefully applied wd40 at the points of contact. May be beyond repair sadly.
Hi , I had the "no disc" problem and took it apart and lubed everything, hooked it up to the power before I put the cover on and everything seemed to work but when I put the radio on cd mode it showed cd 1 etc but had a high pitched static sound. Have you ever come across this problem. Thank you for you help.
Must admit I haven't but sounds like it's only able read CD in the first slot in the magazine maybe and unable to detect the others (as it will check ALL slots on startup)
There's a cd stuck in the reader and I can't push it back into the casette. I can't hook it up to power as well. Could you help?
Sorry I can't help I'm afraid since we no longer have the unit here and I didn't come across this problem whilst we had it. Hope you're able to find answers elsewhere.
@@TxRxFx alright, thank you anyways
My cd changer is not being recognized at all by the head unit (cd changer not jammed). Data cable is connected at both ends. The fuse behind the unit and in the fuse box are good. I am receiving 12 v to the cable before connecting to cd changer. Is it a common capacitor, the mini board, or something else? What else can I test for? Can the cd changer be power up without a data cable connected incase I take it to the electrical repair shop?
fitnesspoint2006 This sounds like it could be a fault on the board in the changer or indeed something (unlikely as it is) wrong with your head unit in the dash.
I'm afraid I don't know quite what you can replace on that board but you could try finding a board from the same model on ebay that's being broken up for parts and see if that works.
Opened mine up just now. Can't spin that big black cog over by hand, but it moves freely if I spin the screw / motor shaft on the other side. Think she needs some lubrication lol
what must do to fix this ??
My CHA 1214 is running again......Thanks
Happy to hear it's got your disc changer running for that wee bit longer. :)
Can you do one for an 01 740il dsp 6 disc changer please?
With nav
Sadly we can't. Best of luck with getting yours fixed!
Excellent!
Very nice... I just see this and fixed mine. but I broke few clips >,< Ouch...
Oh those clips. Glad to hear you had some success with this.
I lube mine today, but the black teeth wheel wont move, its stuck, I will try to put on car and watch if work
The age of these units now a days likely mean.thay motor health may be an issue. We don't have this unit now but sorry to hear yours isn't playing even after the adhoc maintenance.
@@TxRxFx thank you, meanwhile I give up on this radio
