  • I saw Waterparks at the Showbox SoDo in Seattle! I flew up from San Diego for the first two nights of the tour.
The set begins with Watch What Happens Next, the second track off the album Fandom. Awsten dons his guitar and with a very quick transition they play Blonde, the lone Entertainment song on the setlist. And what happens next is something none of us were prepared for.
They play a Greatest Hits medley! Greatest Hits is the title of the fourth album, with songs that were conspicuously lacking on the last couple tours. The medley contains interpolations of Fuzzy, Violet!, American Graffiti, The Secret Life of Me, Just Kidding, See You in the Future and finally Lowkey As Hell.
Waterparks played their full cover of Why Can't I by Liz Phair! Followed by classics Stupid for You and You'd Be Paranoid Too (If Everyone Was Out to Get You).
The themes of religious trauma and guilt have been present on the last album and recent lore. With a poignant interlude the band presented us with the live debut of an unreleased song, SOULSUCKER. It transitions seamlessly into SNEAKING OUT OF HEAVEN!
After Magnetic, the band plays four songs off their most recent album, INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. The are RITUAL, SELF-SABOTAGE, BRAINWASHED and FUCK ABOUT IT.
And then it is time for yet another surprise. For the first time ever, Waterparks uses piano in a live setting. Awsten played High Definition, Snow Globe, and Crying Over It All on a B stage while Geoff and Otto provided instrumentation on the main stage.
Awsten returns solo to the main stage for 21 Questions. Geoff and Otto come back for the end of the song, as is tradition. The follow with their most streamed song, I Miss Having Sex but at Least I Don't Wanna Die Anymore. The main set ends with FUNERAL GREY.
The band returns for the encore with a one-two-three punch of Numb, Turbulent, and REAL SUPER DARK! Awsten sings new lyrics at the very end for reasons I am sure we will learn in the coming months!
