Many of the high fashion leather and fashion houses in Italy import Chinese laborers for the work, and pay very little. So now you're not even paying for the craftsmanship, you're paying for the name.

About ten years ago, I bought a Gucci shoulder bag for a little over USD3,000. Similarly, the exposed edges began to fail. Since I've learned a lot from you and other YT'ers, I decided to rebuild it instead of chucking it. I dismantled the old one to find it had VERY LITTLE leather. What leather did exist was very thin and backed up with nylon and some paper-like material. I used the old panels for my pattern as well as used the existing hardware, zippers, and the Gucci logo patch. I used the highest quality veg-tan leather, dyed it the original black along with a much stronger matching strap. What I have now is an identical bag with all of the original niceties, made to the highest of standards. It should now last me a lifetime. I have gotten many compliments on it thanks to folks like you.

I recently disassembled my wife’s old Louis Vuitton purse to salvage and confirmed that hard truth as well. Printed canvas, foam, cardboard, I think the only leather was the straps. We live in a consumeristic society where status is above anything else. Actual craftmanship isn't respected as much as the name of a company. I could have a bag made of full leather or the best material, and still have a high price tag, but names like Supreme, Gucci, can make a bag with plastic and regular material, but put their name on it and the bag could last only 1 year of wear and tear and people would think that person is richer.

When I started making leather products, I started taking worn-out wallets and purses apart to see how things were assembled. If someone has an aversion to the heft of an all-leather wallet, I offer to make it with nylon card pockets. It does reduce the overall thickness significantly and that is sometimes important if people carry a lot of cards. The disassembly is fun though. Nice video, as always.

For these brands, if anyone but one of their artisans fix something- it becomes a "fake." It is the same for luxury watch brands. If you send your Rolex to get fixed, but you got an aftermarket part or polishing, they will reject it and in some cases even keep it. Additionally, the monogram fabric is probably copyrighted, so using it is an infringement on their copyright. Maybe? I don't agree with LV, but I can see why they did what they did.

I have a B.S. in fashion design, and briefly worked in the fashion industry after college. It's always disgusted me the way big name designers have brainwashed so many people into believing they're paying more for quality. It's all a scam! While in college, I worked in a fabric store where we sold Madras plaid fabric for about $1/yard. It's not a great quality fabric. I went shopping with a guy friend who was looking at designer (Ralph Lauren, I think) shirts from the exact same kind of fabric and was considering paying $50 for a shirt I could've made for about $5.00. Even after I explained it to him, he still seemed to think the quality would be worth it because of the designer name. I just shook my head.

Louis Vuitton started using coated canvas for travelers due to its durability and water proofing, Gucci started using coated canvas during WW2 due to shortages in leather. The canvas became, and remained incredibly popular, and is still used today by Gucci, LV, and many other brands due to its strength, water resistance, and lack of care needed to maintain it. Wallets tend to age more than purses due to how heavily they are used and how they are kept in pants- being subjected to bending and mashing. This wallet is most is easily 5-10+ years old, so of course taking it apart it looks bad. It's been heavily used and still holding together. These brands do not hid the fact that it is canvas, they literally call it coated canvas with leather trim, I suggest before making a big purchase researching the product and deciding the pros and cons of all leather vs coated canvas. This video is mostly an ad for this Corter Leather channel to sell their own goods. So is mostly based to their own goods, and ignoring the quality and history of other brands. Of course, when buying luxury, you are buying into a name that has been well established for years, such as LV since the 1800's. This is just my opinion, but I feel like this video is just an attempt at selling their own goods while knocking other brands to do so.

So the other day I googled "Vachetta", because I was wondering about a type of leather that R. L. Allan and Cambridge University Press used for their Bibles, after I bought one from Allan. Almost everything that came up was talking about Louis Vuitton handbags. If this is par for the course, I almost suspect that my Allan Bible has more actual leather in it than anything Vuitton sells.

One thing that technique does do - which I appreciate in a billfold - is to provide the absolute thinnest possible wallet. What it doesn’t do is provide an heirloom quality piece. I find with my own handmade wallets I tend to have to remove them when sitting otherwise it’s uncomfortable.

Even though people are pooing on the Gucci wallet, I still think it's a really attractive wallet, even if you ignore the 'prestige' label name. Part of what makes it so attractive is the slimness, and the tiny tiny seams. That gives it a very 'expensive' look which is attractive, even if its machine sewn. It gives you the satisfaction of looking at and touching leather on the inside, and the treated canvas on the outside is also nice to touch.
And that leather color (I think it's called 'tango pink') is gorgeous, like a strawberry ice cream milkshake, and looks great against that faded green of the canvas. I would love to buy this (whether I can afford it is another question), given everything I said.
I don't really care that its lined with nylon; in fact I think its a plus because its a very slippery fabric, so it's very easy to slide cards in out between two bits of nylon. So it would feel very satisfying to takes things out and put things in. This is the same reason why the linings and insides of sleeves of suits aren't the same as the outside. So its easy to slip your arms in and out, without friction to get in the way.
I guess the rolled hem is a weak point, but I don't know if that's a mistake or just an accepted weakness in exchange for that 'slimness' which is quite attractive. Maybe there was a better option for getting that look and making it last longer. I don't know.
But I do think I would really enjoy that wallet, even if it doesn't last 100+ years.

yes if you want to make a few millions more per year it surely is. People like you keep their methods alive by buying bad quality products conceived to break after relatively short time over and over. They destroy tons of products just to keep their non existent demand illusion for customers with no idea of reasonable spending habits and to not drop the way too high prices. Most of these maisons are related to nazis anyway so if you keep buying industriel overprized prodicts instead of helping local craftmanship with better quality products that are more sustainable and cheaper, you surely won't appreciate or value the time i invested to make you understand to not buy their garbage.

$390 dollars for that wallet, its say "leather accents". So what your paying for is 25% labor, 15% materials and 60% brand name. So I can buy 3 of your wallets that I know are excellent quality to 1 of thier cheaply constructed brand names. 🤔🤔 always buy American, and New England. 👍

It is actually a Gucci Canvas Bi-fold wallet. If you check on their websites, it is specified on the product.
There are many reasons why top grain/corrected leather instead of full grain:
    1. Top grain leather don't work well in embossing/stamping. They don't give visible details of the branding.
    2. Top grain is ideal to be used in the inside part since it will not experience any potential scuffing or scratches that may damage the leather.
    3. Top grain leather trim and nylon linings are used to create a thinner wallet so it won't bulge in your pocket. It's uncomfortable to carry a bulky wallet.
    4. Full grain leather produces more waste product since it shows imperfections.
Gucci is made in Italy which gives higher labor cost with a high quality craftsmanship.
The finishing in these classic brands are actually refined than the minimalist finish.
Overall aside from what is mentioned above, you are buying a timeless piece that is well presented, marketed with good customer service. Having is a designer item is already attainment.

I would say that 90% of the customers aren't looking for "quality" in terms of manufacture and materials. People pay for the brand. This specific example is very good to showcase the enormous difference between a mediocre product made from a big name vs. something that looks 100 times better but doesn't benefit from the brand. When you put your product close to the Gucci wallet it was heartbreaking. Because the Gucci wallet looked like a cheap Chinese knock-off or (even worse) some kind of plastic toy. I'm from Italy and we all know very well what's behind a Gucci or LV wallet/purse/etc. But still, women and men fight for these brands and pay absurd money to use and wear them. It's a status symbol, you want to be part of the "high" society and walk around the city feeling "amazing".

  • @eggheadegghead
    @eggheadegghead 4 роки тому +1

I think 80% of the people know they are paying for the name, not the value. However, they still pay a lot of money for these brands because they are simply after the brand names. It is just how the society functions nowadays.

The quality has declined over the years, but the prices have gone up. That's how many "luxury" brands make so much money. Cheap materials sold at a crazy price, just because there's a logo on it. It's not about quality anymore, it's about branding and "status". And the worst part is, many designers like Vuitton & Gucci have their factories in China where people are overworked and underpaid. I'd rather support smaller designer brands who pay their workers and care about craftsmanship. When your vuitton bag strap breaks after one month, you know that you paid for a brand, not for quality.

very informative video. thank you. quick question. More leather = Quality? of course less leather(expensive material?) on it means saving money on manufacturing perspective, but I'm wondering if it's also a design choice to make the wallet thin?... I often find many hand crafted leather goods feel way too thick in my taste as I like very minimal slick designs. I have a Ettinger card case that I use as a wallet. As I am watching your video, I checked it & of course it seems to be the same construction as the Gucci wallet you are taking apart. LOL

My daughter and I were just discussing this today. I would prefer a handmade artisian piece over a designer brand. Designer brands are over priced and mass produced When we compare my hand made bag, made by a leather maker in thailand to her designer LV, my bag looks way better, is more functional and has held up better. Hers cost 2k mine from memory cost around 120. Not only that but there are so many fakes around why pay 2k for a bag everyone pretty much has got or can get quite cheaply? Better to look for something that is well made, uses quality materials and has a fair price.

I bought a belt about 8 years ago. I bought it for my waist size online. Unfortunately It turned out to be way too short for me, tightening on the first or second hole. I never sent it back because it is made of plastic fake leather and I needed to use it right away even if it was too short. I could close it, so I wore it, and I've worn it almost every day for roughly 8 years and walked literally thousands of miles and done hundreds of hours of work wearing it. The coating on the metal has long ago worn off. The belt, the plastic leather itself, barely has a wrinkle. Only now is it starting to show wear along the edge at the front. There is a dent where it is most often buttoned and the only wrinkled spot is at the very center of the back of it, where the middle loop goes and gets dragged down by heavy pockets. It cost me something like 30 euros with postage and looks exactly like leather.
Skin cured leather is way out of date. It is defunct since forever, but even if you have money, you are rarely going to see that.
