    Good morning Sandi, we are going thru replacement ewes at the moment also. We sent the ram lambs off a while back with the broker. We kept the ewe lambs because we lost so many ewes in our 2019/2020 group. Because we breed for wool and not meat, we are looking for the best wool production thru the parental line. Each ewe lamb has to build quality wool with little to no dreads (clumped wool). Because we sell wool to those that spin and weave, dreaded wool is not good.
    Anyways Happy Birthday to Jess. Have great day.

    • @FeatheredLife
      @FeatheredLife 4 роки тому +9

      @@SandiBrock dreaded wool that is tightly bound will not accept dyeing well. Even thru the combing/ carding for spinning it can be a very trying experience to comb/card out. The dyeing process looks like tie dye not popular in day and age.

    Hi jess, I want to say thank you for being such a trooper towards your mom even if you may not want to do it. As a 29 year old I would like to tell you my story... my dad passed away 2 years ago, he was 51 years old and suffered a brain stroke. Before his passing I didn’t like doing anything my parents asked, I would always ask “why” but still do it I would always get upset when told to. I never appreciate my parents mostly my dad because he came to American when he was super young from Laos, his family suffered a lot and his dad was never there for him and his siblings. Once my dad married my mom (early 20s) he decided to start a restaurant and he worked every day. Both my parents worked hard and never really had time off..as a kid I never realized they sacrificed a lot for us to be happy. Parents don’t always understand or know what we as kids are thinking and some times they don’t know how to show love or really know whAt they are doing but one thing for sure is that, appropriate them for who they are and what they do because you will never know what will happen in the future. I just turned 27 when my dad passed and there isn’t a day we’re I thought “what if I did this differently, what if” but in reality for me it’s to late. I now go on daily doing the most and never arguing or not wanting to do something because i couldn’t do it when I was younger before my dad passed. So again I would like to say JESS your mom and dad is amazing you are also amazing for helping them. Thank you and best luck to everyone’s future.

    I was thinking about something you said the othr day about the birds - how you wished there weren't as many. I'm seeing a good mix of swallows and sparrows, and the swallows are a godsend for animals, because they really help keep down the insect count in a barn. Sparrows are more into grain as well, but will take the occasional bug too.

      @@SandiBrock Thank YOU Sandi! I was caught in a bad loop of "mask disputes" and "Karen's" garbage coming up on my suggested viewing yesterday, It left me feeling lousy. Your notification bell today was a delight!

    Just a thought.... if you want a photo of the young Billy lamb rams this would be the time to do it as they are freshly shorn and clean. You could add the the black and white theme bugs I gotta Kinsey in the photo as well.

    I really loved the “stop motion” (I think that’s what it’s called) editing parts of the video. Very clever.

    Aww Jess was so funny and cute. Sandi I have been watching you for a bit and being that you and your daughters are so tall and watching you bend over your table, why not get a tall rolling kitchen table to not only put your supplies/ Gallagher on top, but they come with drawers and places to put items you need and really would not take up much space. It would save your back a little. I realize you have to bend over the sheep to vaccinate and CiDR, but if you did not have to bend over for your other items I think it would help your back. I was also thinking there would not be as much lag time when doing CiDRs if your supplies were closer and you could roll the table back to where you start and then bring it forward as you do each ewe. That way you are not waiting on your helper so much or if you do not have a helper going back and forth so many times. Love your videos, your family and the sheep.

    This is fascinating- Thank you for showing us how you make decisions in your business. It's fascinating to me to see how different types of livestock are "graded" in terms of holdback potential. I've had a pig farmer tell me that their top 10% of gilts get held back for breeding to produce at least 1 litter before they make a final decision, but those are animals that have 12+ babies. When you have the potential for 2-5 lambs per ewe it makes sense not to hold back anything that was a singleton. In horses, with a maximum breeding potential (without using surrogates) of 1 foal per year, most breeders and registries will consider the top 30% of females as breeding quality.
