If that's the case why is the economic argument never advanced by the Nationalists despite promising to do so in 2018.
In fact, the last time they tried with the SGC in 2018, even the rosiest predictions which envisaged no impact on trade, GDP not being negatively impacted, increased borrowing cost or a currency crisis saw Scotland have to endure a decade of austerity to just get to the point whereby it's public finances were on a sustainable footing.
Funnily enough that report was quietly brushed under a rug and has never been trotted out again.
The only people who advance the economic argument are liars, essentially.

Apparently they would like to use sterling first, followed by an independent Scottish backed-currency, before being forced to use the euro ... maybe they'll give bitcoin and pogs a try after all that if they ever get a half-decent chance. Economic genius.

Our own currency, as we'l need our own to join the EU bigger market

    • @yousigiltube
      @yousigiltube 3 роки тому +3

@@ScottishRoss27 OK, so let's go point by point:
      * Roughly two thirds of Scotland's trade activity is with the rest of the UK, which is roughly three times as much as Scotland's trade with the EU at its peak after decades of membership (suggesting that this is unlikely to change any time soon).
      * Brexit will prove costly insofar as it introduces extra barriers to trade with the EU (rules, procedures, restrictions, tariffs, quota etc.). Whether independent or part of the EU Scotland will have barriers between itself and the rest of the UK, which is by far its biggest and most accessible market. This will very likely be more damaging than the barriers between Scotland and EU markets as a result of Brexit.
      * Scottish finance is heavily tied up with the rest of the UK at present, and largely serves the rest of the UK. Again, this isn't going to change overnight.
      * Neill points out some of the difficulties and the costs of using sterling as a temporary currency, financing a transition to an independent Scottish currency and then in short order financing a transition to the Euro. Its easy to gloss over this (and all of the important features of the economic argument), it is quite another to actually reckon with them, which I don't see the independence parties or supporters meaningfully doing.
      * The SNP have previously aimed to bring Scotland's deficit down to 3% in order to meet the target for entry into the EU - Scotland's deficit increased last year up to April according to GERS and we have now had a full year of lockdowns / restrictions. This will materially complicate and prolong getting the deficit down, which is to say that willfully pursuing independence immediately after the fiscal impacts of the coronavirus is of course irresponsible and ridiculous. No doubt EU deficits have increased as well but that is probably a good reason why the EU isn't going to want to take on more debt, so Scotland would still have a lot of heavy lifting to do (or austerity endure).
      * The SNP like to make positive but vacuous statements about what Scotland can achieve as an independent country but there is a great deal of risk involved and a prosperous future is far from guaranteed. Had Scotland left during the last referendum their projections for North Sea Oil profits would have immediately collapsed during the oil price crash and caused financial difficulties at the worst possible time. If Nicola Sturgeon was given another referendum when the UK voted for Brexit then Scotland would now be trapped in the EU's vaccine procurement program and face a longer road to opening up its economy (as well as much higher levels of borrowing and business closures as a result) at the worst possible time. Scottish people can choose independence if they like but I hope they aren't oblivious to the risks this could present to their economy and, in turn, their livelihoods / future prospects in a complex and ever-changing world.
      fraserofallander.org/economic-statisticians-irony-and-scotlands-latest-trade-statistics/
I'm sure there are countless other points that could be made; at the end of the day you don't get to be a socialist paradise if your economy isn't performing exceptionally well, and even if it is that could be because you are compromising yourself to do dirty deals with Saudi Arabia, China etc. etc. So yes, for all that it is worth Scotland might eventually be able to use an independent Scottish currency. Since there is no guarantee of Scotland being accepted into the EU (any time soon or at all) you might just be using it longer than you would like. I hope you are keeping things like this in mind while you are trumpeting independence as a cure-all for Scotland's apparent woes after years of SNP leadership (sounds to me like the cure is worse than the disease).

That all assumes that the current economy could survive capital flight and currency speculation that would inevitably happen immediately after independence. Independence is a very, very bad idea.
Ask yourself this simple question: When Sturgeon announces that the currency is changing over from £ Sterling to “Scotopunts” and everyone in Scotland panics and withdraws their savings from the bank, what would happen to the exchange rate? It would drop massively! You’d start with an exchange rate of 1 Scotopunt = £1 at 8am on the first day of the new Scottish currency. By lunchtime a Scotopunt would probably be worth around 60p. Surely if you are going to have independence all of these currency questions should already have answers. But the SNP and all of these independence politicians only have very vague answers apart from everything is always Englands fault. This despite getting more money per head than the rest of the UK population since the 70s, providing prime ministers and politicians to run the whole of the UK. It is always Englands fault. If that is the case why not get rid of the present Scottish parliament as obviously by that logic there is no point to it.

@@19sept76 While I agree there are masses of shared culture and history between Scotland and the other nations within the UK, they are definitely separate historical nations, with unique identities and languages. The union has existed for less time than the world lived without it, 300 years really isn't a long time considering humans have been on Britain for over 12,000 years. Also, Scotland's "auld alliance" with France lasted 265 years, should that have went on forever regardless of what the people want? Obviously not. Yes we all speak English in Britain, but English people also do not speak the various forms of Scots (don't say it isn't a language as you'll just end up sounding patronising again), or Gaelic, the two other languages in existence in Scotland. I'm typing in English, but when I speak I use some similar words, some completely different words and guaranteed you'd have a hard time working out 100% of what I say. The democratic will of England should be respected (Brexit), as should the democratic will of Scotland (rejoining the EU/becoming Independent). The best way to help the working class in my country is to vote for independence, with one vote we could end being affiliated with offshore tax havens, the house of lords, the city of London, Eton and create a whole new political system that is fit for the future. If England can vote for what it wants and get it, but Scotland cannot then we definitely aren't in a nation of equals. Ye can still visit once we're independent man, it's not personal it's political.

Every single area in Scotland voted to remain in the EU, yet we are pulled out as "we're all one big country and in it together". The poor (and everyone else) will have much more voting power in an independent Scotland. We will get the government we vote for and can go in the direction we want to, what's the issue with that? If Scotland wants to be independent and remain in the EU, then that should happen and it would be anti democratic to deny that. Just as it would be anti democratic to deny that England wanted to leave the EU. Scotland is shifting to the left, while England is shifting to the right. The two aren't compatible so both countries should be allowed to take the direction they like, that's how democracy works.
