Zoom Dual Monitors: What Gets Recorded?

  • I made this video to answer a question I've been getting on several of my other Zoom tutorials - what gets recorded when you're using dual monitors? I found the answer surprising - it appears that it will only record the active speaker, unless you pin someone to the second monitor. I could not find a way to record gallery view and the new multi-pin feature seems to have no effect in the recording, since you can only pin one person to the second monitor. If you need to make an important recording, test it first!

Here's a suggestion for another video: what can a host do or change during a meeting, and what can only be done prior to the meeting? There are many examples I've had to answer by experimenting. Can I initially allow guests to enter before the host initially (waiting room disabled), and then enable the waiting room once the meeting begins? Can I add polls during the meeting? Can I change my approach to breakout rooms? Can I switch to/from dual monitor use? Can I change the setting for chatting? And so on. I'm sure you have no shortage of topics available for Zoom instruction, but I thought I'd toss this into the hat.
Just for fun, you could do a "why in the world did they do this, that way!??" video. Maybe if you pile enough of those crazy characteristics into one video someone at Zoom would notice a few.
Thanks for your excellent videos. They have saved me valuable time.

Interesting. When I tried to pin an interviewee in speaker view to Screen 1 for a local recording today, I couldn't figure out why the resulting clip followed whoever was speaking instead of staying on the interviewee. Looks like Dual Monitor may be the culprit. Thanks for the video, you are the only one on UA-cam that is deeply testing these recording setups.

Hey - If you SPOTLIGHT, whomever you spotlight and however many you spotlight, show up in the recording - and it will automatically put other's views into "speaker view" instead of gallery view - they can always change it back. When you PIN a person's video, that is only impacting your personal view and not the view of others. I stumbled upon your videos (thanks for them!) because something updated in Zoom and when I shared my slides, the recording had NO thumbnail view of the active speaker - what?? - I love that the product continues to evolve and get better - for the most part - but it is rough when you are doing live events and need to adapt quickly - and in the case of this recording - it was too late as I didn't know it was happening until after the event ended and I watched the recording. I guess I am just venting now, but please continue to share what you learn. It is appreciated.

Thanks Ben. I've been having these very problems using dual monitors and got totally confused. I've resorted to recording the screen using Flashback Express so I can ensure the important content, on what I think of as Screen 1, is recorded.
To guarantee I do get everything I'm tempted to set up a second laptop and record that as a participant so I get everything one way or the other. I've also found that I can't record multiple screen when recording locally. I did check all the boxes for an online recording so Zoom recorded every possible option but this resulted in a 6.1 GB file which came with a ticking off from Mr Zoom for going over my measly 1GB limit. I have a paid account and I don't understand why this is the same as the free account. I believe it should be at least 5 to 10GB.

Hi Glen - yep, as I said in the video...I've done 30+ Zoom videos at this point, and this is the first one I've made where I've just been outright confused. What gets recorded really doesn't seem to make any sense. See my conversation below (or maybe above, depending on how UA-cam sorts comments) with RonOnThePond - very similar to your situation.

When you have multiple people sharing their screens the recording seems to only pick up one screen, the first one that was shared apparently.

Hello ! I have a question, sorry if you’ve answered that already. If your students speak during the lesson, do they become the speaker and therefore will be seen in the recording ? Thank you so much !

Hi - you can avoid this using the pin and spotlight features, I have other videos covering that.

Hi prof, whats your opinion on using zoom remote control for programming classes?

Very good analysis. I have just gone through a similar test, as you suggested at the end. You used the phrase "not what I expected" several times, and I would be more blunt about what Zoom records with dual monitor set up: it makes no sense. I am hosting a no-do-over event this Saturday and although I have three monitors, I will not likely use the dual monitor setup in Zoom for precisely this reason. I can still move various Zoom panels (participants, polls, etc.) to another monitor, but I'll have better control of what gets recorded by Zoom without dual monitor setup. I may also test using OBS (you used Camtasia) for simultaneous recording as a backup. Bottom line: unpredictably is not helpful, Zoom!!! In fact, give us some checkbox settings to choose what we want recorded, dual monitor or not.

I agree - the original language I had in mind for the title wasn't so polite but I try to keep my videos G-rated. "What the ****** gets recorded?" is probably more appropriate. It doesn't make any sense and seems totally inconsistent with what shows up for single-monitor recording. I managed to get their attention on social media with one of my other videos before so I plan on at least trying to ping them on this one as well.

@@BenFinio Good luck with that! After spending most of the day yesterday experimenting to avoid disappointment with hosting an important annual event this Saturday, my frustration now extends to other nonsensical characteristics of Zoom beyond the question of what's recorded. I do like Zoom, but it becomes incredibly nuanced as to who can do what in various circumstances and on what device. Ben, you could spend the rest of your life making videos to cover all combinations and permutations. The flow chart of "cans" and "cannots" would cover my entire office wall. Again regarding recording … with a 1Gb cloud account, what happens when I exceed the paltry 1Gb in the middle of a recording? I now know the answer from yesterday's experimenting. Today I'm going to try cloud recording from my desktop pc while simultaneously recording all three monitors with OBS, and also doing a local recording from a laptop. Maybe one of those will give me what I need later in post-production with Vegas Movie Studio!

@@RonOnThePond Oh, don't get me started on breakout rooms...you're right. The highly customizable setup is great for power users but not at all ideal for people who were thrust into using Zoom due to the pandemic. All the different permutations become way too confusing. As you can see, this playlist started off with just a couple basic videos and now has expanded into 30+ "but what if/what about..." videos. Per your other comment - that is a great idea and I'll add it to my list. On more than one occasion I've been disappointed to find out that I either a) can't access a certain setting in the middle of the meeting at all, I need to do it from my account in a browser, or b) I can access the setting but it won't actually take effect unless I leave and rejoin the meeting (e.g. dual monitors). I am making these as spare time allows so can't guarantee I will get to it soon though. Also, I did get their attention on Twitter but their answer wasn't helpful and they haven't responded to my follow up: twitter.com/BenFinio/status/1318180439123689472

I have a theory about cloud recording, not fully tested but pretty likely accurate. I'll leave the full testing to you and your massive amount of spare time ;) I now believe that cloud recording has nothing whatsoever to do with whether dual monitors are used, or what specific view may be active. It is simply a matter of choosing what you want recorded (Zoom > Settings > Recording > Cloud recording) and that's what you'll get. For example, there is an option to "Record active speaker, gallery view and shared screen separately." This results in three separate mp4 files, one remaining in active speaker view, one in gallery view, and one showing nothing but any shared screens. Each includes an identical audio track. If you are planning to fiddle around with things with a post-production tool, this should do it. There are some other options for recording that combine active speaker or gallery with shared screens, but I haven't tried them to verify what they do. There is also an option to record only the audio track alone, although all other options do include the very same audio track.
If I am correct about this, all it would take from Zoom is one simple statement: Cloud recording is completely independent of the views or monitor configuration selected during the meeting. I hope this saves you some time in digging into this further. Good luck, Ben!

@@RonOnThePond so you're right, but for reasons I don't understand, that option is disabled for me! When I navigate to the settings in a browser, the "record blah blah to separate video files" option is grayed out and I can't select it. My account is through work so I assume our admins must have disabled it for everyone, but I'm not sure why. My only guess would be that we are paying for a fixed amount of cloud storage, and recording three different videos would potentially triple the amount of space a single meeting takes up. Is your account a personal one or for work?
