Yes, that's how I started. There is some advantage in foam. It's lighter and stronger, so it flies more efficiently and slowly--gives you time to react. But if you can't get foam, telephone paper or newspaper works. But it's a different pattern.
Indeed, newspaper is a little heavier than phone book paper, but some places in the world do not have phone books. Newspaper is still lighter than printer paper, which doesn't work well.Unfortunately, no paper works well in humid weather--gets limp. I put the link to the paper version in the text area.
great stuff!! It is refreshing to find new ideas flurishing. New ways to make physics work for you. One I discovered and excited abt is the new ROCKET STOVE MASS HEATER. TAKES ALL THE HEAT FROM A FIRE AND CAPTURES IT, THEN SLOWLY WARMS YOUR HOME WITH JUST AN ARM-LOAD OF WOOD.
I would have thought newspaper would be too heavy. I'm surprised that it works. It's probably more difficult to keep up for novice "pilots"! Telephone directory paper is nice and thin and probably slightly stiffer than newspaper, plus most people have an old one knocking about in the house somewhere. Cheers ;)
You can also make it out of paper. Do a UA-cam search for "big mouth tumblewing". Paper has a grain, so make sure you orient it so the strips are as strong as possible.

You can make them out of a page from a telephone directory. It works great.
I did this project or one similar with high school students in 2 days. It was fantastic, used it to model how an engineer works.

Can't we use only paper
such a slow glider foam.
can you just use paper?
You cannot use paper for this design (not stiff enough for the amount of weight) but there is a similar design goo.gl/A24ZZJ
thank you for the link!
Noooooooooooooooo You. Can’t
It's amazing!!
Great
