Why are ULTRA FOAM Walkalong Gliders so Different?

  • Ultra Foam is only a few times more dense than air itself, so walkalong gliders made from it fly VERY slowly.

    I am a sculptor and i use 1 lb EPS and sometimes 2 lb EPS foam. I have an actual hill of scrap and have started to draw gliders planning to make a variety of them. Gotta put all this scrap to good use! We typically don’t sculpt any blocks smaller than 12 inches thick, and the slabs of 4, 6, 8 inch thick ‘mattress’ get used for padding when shipping large sculptures. But even still, I have way way more than I can ever use. I have a CNC Hotwire cutting table and can cut vector files of wing profiles, started drawing some glider parts in Adobe illustrator my nephew is turning 5 next weekend and I think I will bring several experimental gliders to his birthday party in a park.

      Thanks Daryl. I think we're both slowing down in the frequency of video uploads. But your work with the pop pops and your family's European canal trip will be relevant even in hundreds of years. If anybody has trouble finding the canal boat video, it's here ua-cam.com/video/hLYZHUPexbw/v-deo.html

    The narrator sounds like the narrator from a Kitty Hawk Kites hang gliding training film by David Harris. I think he's Canadian and it was made in the 80's. Anyone know more?

      @@sciencetoymaker Thats's funny. It's 3 miles from my house and I taught there for 8 years. I shot some of that footage of the lessons. Do you know who is narrating it though? Is it you narrating? I've made these and Terry Sweeney gave me his design that I made a hot wire cutter and produced a few from the pink foam.

    • @sciencetoymaker
      @sciencetoymaker  Рік тому +1

      @@316woodworks9 I did not narrate it; don't know who. You mentioned Terry Sweeney. He was one of the first people to help me get started with the gliders. You can see him at about 1:20 in this video

      @@316woodworks9 Terry and the MacCready family used Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) which is the smoother foam insulation sold in building supply (usually blue or pink) used underground for basements. Also in grocery packaging for meats and vegetables and in take-out containers. I've gone to Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) which is the white, beady stuff you see on cups, cheap insulation, electronics packaging etc. because it is considerably lower density so it flies slower. There is a cost, however. EPS is flimsier than XPS so my designs have a fatter aspect ratio and I have to be really careful handling them.

    • @316woodworks9
      @316woodworks9 Рік тому +1

      @@sciencetoymaker That's correct. The plans I emailed you are from Terry and I did make them out of the pink foam. Pretty durable but your EPS concept is pretty insane. It's so light that it works best with that thin gauge wire. I'm definitely getting back into this again and want to get my son's school interested.

    Can someone explain to me how it works, how it flies when you hold the cardboard in your hand

    • @sciencetoymaker
      @sciencetoymaker  10 місяців тому

      Essentially a walkalong glider is a very slow (so it has to be very lightweight) glider that stays up because the air it is in is rising. Walking with a board scoops up air it encounters. You learn to keep the glider where the air is being deflected up by the board. Thie following video at about 11.20 compares it to "ridge-lift" that allows hang gliders and soaring birds to stay in the air for hours
