Paragliding Accident with Rescue Landing

  • During the Swiss League Cup in Fiesch I had a complete Collapse. After it I found myself upside down. When the glider came back above me, I was double twisted and had a big cravatte at 1/3 of the wing. As the brakes where blocked in the twist, I decided not to hesitate and to pull the rescue. I was lucky to land smoothly at 2300m. After repacking the rescue I could manage to fly back to Fiesch.

    Thank you for sharing this! I think you made the right decision to throw before you started into some kind of crazy dive. You radio reported your situation, and you were able to pull in the main as you came in. I didn't get the impression that you were out of control. Glad you were able to clean up your mess, and re-pack your reserve to fly down. Great story. Thanks for sharing.

    Wow! Thanks for giving my adrenals a good work out. Good decision process, and pulling in the glider was definitely smart once under the chute. Glad you're alright.

    Wow, your landing was very gentle compared to mine! My wing was downplaning and I had no time to reel it in, hit VERY hard. Bravo on the repack and fly! If I ever have to throw again my number 1 priority will be to stop the downplaning.

    (google translation) My first flight in Fiesch in 2001: After landing, a colleague said that he had to pull the rescue and landed on the mountain pasture. And while he was packing up the rescue, the next pilot came down on the rescue parachute!

    That was exciting. Scared the poop out of me. I was thinking about paramotor training but i dont think i could handle that much excitement. Glad your ok.

      Ray Harkins PPG happens near dawn or sunset in calm air, at least for your first few years. The reflex wing will not collapse. Go for it! Even PG can be collapse free if you stay out of thermic air. And reserve parachutes work.

      @ParaAsh 6 років тому

      +Ray Harkins, when paramotoring you generally spec your wing to be far more loaded than when paragliding, consequently the additional weight means that a collapse is far less likely. Plus as said above, PPG is done when weather isn't thermally (for beginners at least) and consequently you're flying in much calmer air. GO FOR IT!

    Wow that's the first time I've seen someone actually be able to pull their main in under reserve. Most of the time they are still getting too much lift out of the main to be able to pull it in. Good job.

      With that big cravatte at the middle of the wing it was not that hard. In any case, if the main is in pressure, you can simply pull on the A and collapse it. Trying to pull it to you just by taking the whole riser will not work as mentioned from you

    What was the nature of the collapse (I also fly the XA2)?

    • @tizianodipietro6682
      @tizianodipietro6682  6 років тому +3

      Caedmon Mullin from thermal to a downwash. The change was not predictable and the whole wing came down but without collapsing. Main problem then was a double twist

    Hi, are you aware that your video was re-uploaded by another UA-cam channel and published with the title "Paragliding crash! Reserve parachute HD" ?
    Did you give permission? Sorry if you were already aware.

    What’s with the sleeping bag for your legs? I didn’t use that back in the 1990’s, it wasn’t that cold. You’re up there to fly, not go camping.

    • @tizianodipietro6682

      It's not small. It's a firebird turbistopp 100. Maybe because of the fisheye of the gopro

    ,,After repacking the rescue I could manage to fly back to Fiesch.´´ You always fly with an extra Container and handle? :D :D

    • @tizianodipietro6682
      @tizianodipietro6682  5 років тому +2

      No. I had to improvise a container with the bag where I susually put the glider, some strings and a carabiner. Not really sure it would work, but I was hoping not to have to throw it again the same day. Flew out, then with only two thermals (10km) back to the landing

    • @tizianodipietro6682
      @tizianodipietro6682  5 років тому

      Forse no. Ma di fatto ognuno di noi è libero di scegliere le proprie attività nel tempo libero. Non credo fino ad ora qualcuno si sia posto la stessa domanda riguardo l'andare in macchina, eppure anche lì gli incidenti non mancano. È normale andare in macchina dove anche se non hai colpe rischi l'incidente per colpa del primo asino in giro? La speranza è sempre quella della vela che restiaperta e che l'asino resti a casa

  • @mattcolver1
    @mattcolver1 6 років тому

    The air sure looked pretty unstable considering the look of the clouds. A hang glider could handle a big downdraft with ease. IMHO paragliders should only be flown in very stable air. A rigid airframe sure has advantages over a completely flexible one.
