This makes me imagine a funeral. A woman has died, and out in front, watching from a car, is a man who tried to protect her, but instead was deemed not guilty of her murder. He asked the family permission to attend, but were outraged at his presence and told him to leave and never come back. Bit by bit he recalls in his mind how she died.
The men chasing her down the street. Guiding her through a winding alleyway. The rattle of gunfire mere feet away. Fighting. Bleeding. One man left. Both fire at each other. One missed, the other hit. She is safe. Gasping. The bullet didn't miss. Blood, lots of it. Falling into his arms. "I'm sorry". Gasping stops. Gone.
A single tear as he recalls her vacant stare.
Police arrive. Surround him. Doesn't make any sudden moves. Cuffed behind his back. Shoved into a van. Gavel falls. Cleared of all charges. Happy lawyer. Sad client.
He bears the same sad, empty look in his car.
Her family rejected him. Banished. Left alone to grieve.
Everyone has left. He exits his car and walks over to the fresh grave.
