Alocasias I Transitioned from Soil to Leca | 6-Month Update | Passive Hydro

- G'day, guys! In today's video, I give you a 6-month update on my Alocasia micholitziana and Alocasia 'Stingray' that I moved from chunky aroid soil mix to leca in a no drainage passive hydro / semi-hydro system.

The plants have been inoculated with mycorrhizal fungus and have been growing like crazy ever since the transition despite constant spider mite infestations... grrrr bloody spider mites!
I definitely recommend moving your Alocasia from soil to leca if you're having trouble with leaves dying off or root rot. Mine have thrived ever since I moved them into the passive hydro no drainage leca setup.

I have 2 other Alocasias growing in leca, but they’re young. I grow most of my plants in semi hydro. I hate dirt; I use every substrate, except traditional soil.

Good short video. Ja the roots got burnt from the sun. I use a piece of paper to block the sun and protect the roots from rotting. The positive aspect is that it causes the plant to send out more roots. Have you tried moistening S.Moss and placing it at the top of the root ball? Although many plant the Alocasia too deep in the substrate, inducing too much moisture and causing the plant stem to rot, if you plant it correctly the moisture from the moss will not only cause new roots to grow but also cause the plant to push out Corms. I also noticed that your root ball is further down from the opening. This can cause the new “Pups” to be too tight and become damaged. Also when planting higher in the glass since the “Pups” are from the root ball they have less obstruction and pop out easily. Lecha is easiest and most practical substrate. I believe Alocasia love it because of the amount of air and space the roots receive. Pons, Perlite and Fluval are also great, but I feel the roots are too confined or densely packed. Mixing them is the better solution but less cost efficient. Made an experiment with all 4 substrates and the Lecha, Fluval, Pons and Perlite, in that order, was also my success rating. I’m impressed with the Fluval too and am conducting a long term test. As of 4 months the Fluval is giving support and additional nourishment. The root growth is immediate. The optic is also pleasing to the eye. I have basically 70% of the 100+ plants of Lecha with more to come. But the Fluval is definitely my 2nd choice although it’s very expensive in comparison. And yes those spots are from Thrips. They should be dealt with every 7 days for 14-21 days. After that the plant will thank you with unblemished leaves. My Variegated Frydek had them too but because of the variegation it’s not as noticeable. Thanks for the video.
My Frydek looks like yours, it is in a mix of Leca and Pon, roots galore! My Stingray is in Pon and roots are out the bottom of the pot, it is much newer and smaller than the Frydek. All of my plants in both substrates are doing very well. i am just getting into Hoyas and understand that they LOVE Pon.

I was thinking of moving my Alocasia to full hydro but haven't worked up the courage..... maybe I will have to give semi hydro some though.
How do you keep some of these bigger plants straight in full hydro? I've seen bushlike plants (Calathea, Begonia etc) grown in a vase with water, but i have no idea how to keep tall plants upright. I guess that's why people use leca and pon, just for support.
@@Danko_HS some of my bigger full hydro plants, like my Monstera, is in a big tall vase. The vase forms part of the support.
I don’t have a lot of experience with alocasia but I will say that my stingray loves leca. After a pest treatment my stingray died back to a stump with no roots and I thought it was a goner. But it rooted like crazy and now that I’m fertilizing and watering regularly (I was very neglectful for a while) it is finally throwing out more mature leaves and no longer aborting the older ones. I’ve never had spider mites on it either which is impressive because I massively underwatered it for a couple years and never gave it nutrients. Semi hydro is perfect for alocasias because it has the proper aeration and moisture to keep them happy. I recommend transferring some corms over before transferring the whole plant just in case. Anything can happen and like I said, I can only speak of my experience with the stingray.
Hi Pete, love your videos. Very informative. As far as I know, Alocasias are toxic to animals. How do you manage to keep them away from Peaches?
It looks great, I will try to transfer my polly to pon. I think the pon will be less of a problem with leaves getting stuck and I have never used leca

Have you tried the plastic net pots so you can rinse the leca?
I am having trouble finding a good guide to water and fertilizer. How high up should I fill with water? Is this similar to a start in water, and the roots won't rot if you fill the cup? Should you actually submerge the roots and allow the water to stand until consumed? I have looked at several videos and googled, but am failing to find this info.
Fab job mate! I’ve given up on owning alocasia but kudos to you for persevering 💪And it’s paid off. Will be transitioning my Calathea to semi hydro so I hope they go off like ‘a frog in a sock’ too 😅

Hi Pete love your videos! I would like to ask how you keep your alocasia safe during winter? I heard they are very sensitive to cold weather and I’m not sure how to face cold Melbourne weather with them 😢
Hey mate, I think if you've got them indoors they should do okay. Worst case scenario they drop a few leaves or all of them and you just have to make sure you don't overwater them until they start growing again.
Do you think moving them to leca will help with pests?
I switched my frydek to a "parfait" situation- it's in 1/3 leca, 1/3 chunky soil, and 1/3 moss at the top. It's gone from 1 sad plant to 5 mostly happy ones!

Great update. Alocasia are my jam! You may have convinced me to try some. I lean toward Pon. I use Leca in my soil mixes, but not in semi hydro. Do you or can you do a Pon vs Leca with an alocasia?

I have a Melo corm I’m propping and a imperial nebula that’s just kinda meh. Maybe I’ll try those. Since it’s winter here and they are not normally under grow lights, may get a false result.Nebula could be dormant, but still worth a try.

Potentially. I haven't done that before though.
I wish my stingray was shaped like yours. Mine has longer skinnier leaves. I thought it was a maturity thing but even your small immature leaves have a deep sinus and wide leaves.

I wonder if certain plants like Monstera's would be good in LECA because with semi hydroponics, the roots that come out of the plastic pot and sit in the reservoir would be crushed because of the weight. I don't think LECA's are for plants that get huge.
My monsteras do the best in LECA. I have 2 deliciosa from soil, a few rooted cuttings I got from friends and a thai... before they would spot, I would occasionally get root rot, and their leaves would sag. In LECA the past year they have all thrived and push leaves out like crazy even in the winter. I never had a leaf get over 16" until I had it in LECA. The leca creates air pockets between the balls for roots to grow between, so no worries of roots being crushed. It also fairly easy to move up in container size (just remember to use a container that is the same width all the way down for easy removal!)
