  • Continuing in my challenge to ride in every county in Great Britain (and then the UK) this is Trike around the counties | Cumbria Part 2
Day two of my travels along the C2C route sees me start the day at Burns Farm campsite, Castlerigg. I make my way out of the Lake District national park and towards Penrith...
More information about the full C2C route from Sustrans at www.sustrans.org.uk/Sea-to-Se...
For more information on transportation services along the route...
    www.havencycles-c2cservices.co...
To complete the Counties Challenge I'll be visiting each of the 97 counties listed below. These are the old (pre 1900) counties of England, Scotland (S) and Wales (W). The list doesn't include the newer metropolitan counties as I don't fancy triking around some of Britains larger cities very much 👎.
I have no plans to ride them in any particular order but will ride my trike in each of them and I might just stay a little longer in some of the larger counties and maybe a bit less in some of the tiny ones. We will have to wait & see..
The thumbnail to this video and to every video in the "Britain county by county playlist" depicts the recognised county flag. Though in this case the Cumbrian flag appears to be interchangeable with the Cumberland flag depending on who you ask.
I hope you enjoy watching my vlogs. Also check out my website at:
    www.timstriketrips.com.
I ride an adapted HP Velotechnik Scorpion FS26 trike.
My panniers and sidebags are made by Ortlieb.
I film using a Canon G7X MkII, GoPro Hero 6 and a DJI Spark Drone. I also occasionally use my Galaxy S9 phone to record some footage but prefer not to if I can help it.
    So the counties are...
    Aberdeenshire (S)
    Anglesey (W)

Tim, you're a wizard with the camera and your editing is marvelous. The lush England in your lens make me wonder (slightly) why my ancestors left 669 years ago :) . Medical issues put me on an electric Scorpion this past April. I use a Bafang 750W motor backed by a 16 amp hour 48V battery.
When I refer to the machine, I call her Ethyl (after tetraethol lead)...she's big boned and tipped the scale this morning at 76.5 pounds and I feel so much better about the contribution my motor adds since we had a conversation about her weight. The motor/battery add 21lbs to the total, but their weight is unnoticeable until/if I flatten the battery. To date my longest ride is 43 miles (69Kish) and the battery retained a 25% charge. That ride was over two thousand feet of elevation at about 16mph. Today I rode 34 casual miles over 1300 feet with 75% remaining. My legs haven't reached their peak as yet.
The plan is to add an additional battery before I ride a 100 mile fundraiser for my local spinal cord/brain injury hospital this September (I really hate to sweat). My joints are good, but Guilliam-Barre is going after my nerves so pedal assist has become a necessary accessory. Luna Cycle a vendor who provides programable solutions that keep me competitive with the local road racers...they hate me.
    Thanks for your work!

Hi Scott, The Bafang motors had also caught my eye. We are limited to 250w for on road use in the UK but I'm not looking for a speed machine and am far more concerned with the optimum range I can get while touring.
I'll look for your comments on the E-assist video I'm working on. I would value your experienced insight for sure.

Hi Tim. I really enjoy your drone, riding past and riding away shots - they really add to the vids.
Camping gear, techy stuff and the bags themselves add a lot of weight. I did the end to end years ago in a couple of weeks using youth hostels on my mountain bike with two small Karrimor panniers and a handlebar bag. I cooked every night by carrying rice, pasta and cereals and stopping to shop each day. No tech of course - just a basic computer, a cut up car atlas for maps and finding a phone box to check in with my wife every day. It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had and I wish I could do it again.
Don’t give up on shortening the cranks - I recon Highpath would be able to lop some off your fancy cranks as he probably uses the pedal hole as his guide. Or how about trying the Hase swing cranks? Kevin at D-Tek may well have some you could try??
JaYoe Matt had trouble with his knees and found some pedal axle extensions helped...it seemed counterintuitive to have feet wider apart but it worked for him. I hope the knees are easier.

    • @TimsTrikeTrips
      @TimsTrikeTrips  5 років тому +1

Yes I really went overboard on the gear I was carrying... no idea why.
And you could do it again if you really wanted to but I'd suggest doing something different anyway... its never as good the second time around is it?
The knees are about as good as they're ever going to be now, cheers 😉

Hi Tim. I recall the you talking about your bucket list. I live in Canada and just found a about The Great Trail. Its a trail that goes from the Yukon to Newfoundland. It is 24000 km long. The longest trail in the world. It includes water and ferry travel. There is an app for it and an interactive map. I’m sure there are more than a few sections of it that are not paved. I thought this might give you something to ponder. So many places to go, so many things to do. I look forward to your next episode.

Just stumbled across your channel, even though I don't ride a trike but a collection of diamond frame bikes (and a Brompton...). I appreciate the challenge you faced on the C2C. I tackled it in 2018 and made it about 15 miles beyond you before my legs decided the hills had been too much and they weren't going to power me over the Hardknott Pass. It was a learning exercise - I was probably carrying too much camping related kit, had too high gearing and wasn't recovering overnight after the previous day's ride (I began the trip by riding from Carlisle to Whitehaven on the first day). It's on my list to take those lessons then try again one day!

Each of us has our own situation. You go farther afield than I do, spending nights in your tent and such generally in your own country (though you crossed the Channel to the Netherlands and headed to Morocco). Sylvia goes much farther, venturing all over the world. I, on the other hand, stay close to home because I'm a recent devotee and am exploring my limitations.

Another great trip Tim! I just loved watching the landscape. ⛰👍🏻
Sorry to hear about your knee problems. E-assist definitely might help to make things a bit easier. Actually my new Scorpion fs26 which I’ve got a couple of days ago does have a Go SwissDrive. That’s really great support in certain situations, especially due to the fact that I’m pedaling with my right leg only since I’m a left side over-knee amputee.
Although I use it as less as possible it feels good to know you can rely on this tail wind if needed.
I used to ride my previous old trike (Hase Lepus) without e-assist for several years, but some hills were pretty tough. 🥵
So to make things short, I can really recommend e-assist. I know a couple of recumbent riders see this as cheating, but if you have some kind of handicap e-assist helps a lot to stay active and also go to places which you probably couldn’t go to without. I also heard from many others that you do even more cycling, so it’s not really about getting lazy at all which I can confirm myself, too. Whenever time and weather allows I jump on my Scorpion to “Rock’n’Roll”. 🤩
Looking forward to you upcoming video on this topic. All the best and keep on triking. 💪🏻😊

    • @TimsTrikeTrips
      @TimsTrikeTrips  5 років тому +2

Thanks for your comments as always Mac. The way I look at it... its only cheating if you're out to break some sort of record. My purpose for riding (and most others on my channel I think) is purely for the pleasure of being outdoors and getting a little exercise. If a little push helps me along the way then I'm all for it.

Tim, if your serious about e- assist, google Pedelecs, there is web forum about pedal assist bikes mainly for upwrongs, but it's possible to convert Trinny to e- assist, for less than a new trike. Depending on what you get , you can reckon on a motor & battery pack less than a grand.

Yup, already been looking at options. Thanks for the input. Saving my ideas for a talky video coming soon... 😉👍I'll be looking for lots of advice and ideas I'm sure.

@@TimsTrikeTrips I reckon your options will be limited, but you can fit a centre drive motor, such as a Bafang or the GSM unit, it limits the use of chain rings to one , maybe 2, but you are using assistance so extra rings not really needed.
I use Pedelec site myself, as I do have 2 E-bike, plus I had thought of converting my trike.
I look forward to discussing your options on the Pedelec forum, you will get knowledgeable replies,, there have been a few conversions done on trikes.

The Bafang has already caught my eye. Looks quite handy but I'm still not sold on their reliability or range... Off to the Pedelec site to find out 😉

So you're liking the Efneo? Maybe some more detailed info on how it's holding up and the details surrounding it?
Also see that the G7X still has some focus noise. I haven't noticed that on mine yet, but this seems to be a problem with the model.
All is well if you're still triking!!

I'll try and remember to give a more detailed update on the Efneo soon. The G7X does seem to have one or two little issues. All in all though, given the amount of use I had out of it, its still probably fairly good value. Its also an excellent vlogging camera.
One more video to come with the noise (they were all recorded before I noticed it) then it should be better.

Any idea how much you are carrying? I am a commuter bike rider, and I ride a 2 wheeled recumbent. Just my every day carry stuff probably weighs about 12 to 15 pounds. I also have a bad knee, right one and a not so good left ankle. But I do not drive, and there is very little public transportation where I live. So I do what I must. Take a day, get a brace for your knee, maybe send some gear home, and keep on pedaling, you will make it.

Silly me didnt weigh the trike after Cumbria. I know it was at least 5kg heavier than previous tours I've done. I'd say my kit was close to 50 pounds (25kg) or thereabouts. Far too much for my legs to push up hills all day long. The ride finished a while back now James and to be fair I was glad I stopped after. It took a little longer than a day to get back to normal.
But I will try again. I'm not going to miss out on all that additional scenery and countryside 😉

@@TimsTrikeTrips Yeah, those Rollers, not quite but almost hills, can get too you. We have those in Wyoming, the Rolling Hills. As for the weight. I'm 56 with a bad right knee and gimpy left ankle, but 50 pounds just does not seem like alot. Then again I do have 27 gears to choose from on my recumbent. Or maybe I'm just a masochist and I dont let the pain bother me :) Any ways, hope your feeling better, stay safe and keep pedaling.

What tires are you running ? Do you use liners ? I have Big Apple Plus with liners, love the Big Apples since no rear shock, helps with the Gekko. I notice before and thought would ask, you had no derailleur tube, did you only have one chain ring before the EFNEO ? Take care of yourself Tim.

Hi Randy, I roll on Shwalbe Marathon plus on the front with a Plus tour on the back for a little more grip. I was really surprised to get a flat on them 🙄
Yup just the single chainring originally. I was silly enough to think the Rohloff would be enough on its own. But I'm very happy with the EFNEO. Just not so happy with my legs ha ha.

@@TimsTrikeTrips I was looking into the Rohloff myself but no, I could almost buy another Gekko for the price of the complete set up. Going with the Schlumpf Mountain Drive and if I can, keep my derailleur to have more gears and may put 10 gears in the back. Buy the way, beautiful country you have there.

    • @TimsTrikeTrips

yup the Rohloff is a silly price but really is a great bit of kit too. I went all out on Trinny . Figured she might have to last me a good few years. I'll be interested to hear how you get on with the Schlumpf. I've not heard anything but good reports about them.

    Tim,
Just an aside: your website appears to be poorly. I'm trying timstriketrips.com/ and all I get is "Error establishing a database connection"...

Thanks for pointing this out Greg. I'm getting the same result. I'll try and get it back up again asap.
