- Tip up fishing details for targeting big pike on Montana’s Fort Peck Reservoir. If you love targeting big fish, tip ups are an incredible tool for presenting big baits and tackling big fish. Perhaps no place offers a better opportunity than Fort Peck because of the potential for trophy-class northern pike and the fact that you can use six tip ups per person.
Fort Peck is a massive body of water with changing ice conditions. We highlight some ice safety tips and situations to watch out for on Fort Peck. We also detail the types of locations we target big pike from early and mid-winter all the way to late ice. Big pike can be found and targeted on Fort Peck throughout the winter. Besides trophy class pike, Fort Peck can also produce some giant walleye and remains one of the top winter lake trout fisheries in the United States.
These tip-up opportunities don’t take a lot of equipment and are readily accessible. We break down the setup and provide information on where, when, and how to target big pike through the ice.

This my favorite lake in Montana
I love fort peck! The variety quality and quantity of fish is amazing. I have been able to fish it about 5 trips a year. Lasting 2 to 4 days each trip. Caution ⚠️ it can get extremely dangerous on windy days when in a boat.
Yes that lake can get rough. Agree it is a special place 👍
I would have definitely kept that second laker. Tasty.
I’ve really never used tip ups before but this Video makes me want to use some😂 thanks Jason for the video
Tip ups are a change of pace for us and a lot of fun with a group of friends. A lot of camaraderie.
Get yourself some jack traps, they are a way better trap than these tip ups
@@dominoperk2873 Jack Traps are built very well and are really popular in the NE part of the country but don’t work as well when they freeze up. It is a lot colder and windier in this part of the Country overall so most of the tip ups people use are thermal style with a lubricant.
@@JasonMitchellOutdoors I use my jack traps all the time here in ND, absolutely zero problems with them freezing up, and they can be seen forever, I stand behind my statement, tip ups are ok, but jack traps are definitely better
@@dominoperk2873 each there own.
Did you just leave your lines out for a couple days? That's how Marshall outdoors does it.
We checked them every hour and pulled them when we were not there but a lot of people out their run tip ups like a trap line. I think the rules are that if you have the tip ups unattended, you have to put your name and ALS # on your tip up.
Very nice!😃👍
Thanks 👍
Great show! Was this last year or this year? Asking just because I’m curious if it’s already frozen now?
Yes this footage is from last year. Fort Peck is behind schedule but should have safe ice soon.
Jason where do I sign up to do what you do God bless you get to experience such beautiful places and the variety of fish species
Was this recorded this year?
