- 1992 - THE BIG SNOW:
A million sheep died when the heaviest snowfall for 30 years hit Canterbury in late-August 1992 - the lambing season. Snow started falling in the evening of August 27. It snowed down to sea level and by mid-morning the next day, power was out through much of the region.
"The city's worst natural disaster in years."
If only it still held that title.
Thank goodness for global warming.
I was 10 in '82 and lived in Oxford, North Canterbury (about 45 mins north of CHCH and higher altitude). We got snowed in for about a week (or two) and had to hike to town for supplies in knee-deep snow. Crazy, but fun as a kid.

I remember this as a kid. Power lines fell down and I was too scared to jump over them 😂
19 yrs old new to chch first time flatting no firewood yeah might of been why I went north dec 92 .
I remember that snow like it was yesterday. My daughter was teething and was in pain so I had to get to the pharmacy. I stepped out of the car, and the snow went right up to my err.., nether regions. My daughter had one of those 'Maggie Simpson' snow suits on and was loving the snow. None of those shops and buildings shown in this video exist any more. Funny seeing the cathedral all in one piece.

Is it just me or do people here in 1992 seem much more friendly with a very caring unity between essential services and the public ? i came to NZ in 1999 but it just seems a tad abrasive these days but people in this video just seem so lovely and caring and just everything positive ❤
They were far from friendly in 1992 as Christchurch was the capital for racist in NZ

It is not expanded to widescreen but that the pixels are half width so that when they fill a standard width pixel they take up double the width
We luckily had a Suzuki 4wd at this time and drove out to Darfield and we were Godsmack at the High heights of those at least 10ft high snow drifts tool Amazing photos Must hunt these Out ❄️☃️⛰😍
