There's nothing better than the ebb and flow of a five-day test match between two well-matched teams. You don't need to see every ball bowled and there are times when the game can be becalmed, but when it explodes into critical action, it can't be beat for excitement.

I don't think anyone sits idle during a test. Like, if there is a room in the house that needs painting, we move the television to that room, and spend the next couple of days painting it while we are watching the cricket. You find stuff that needs to be done during a test, there is always something that needs to be repaired, or you place a tele out in the garage and work on something mechanical while the game is being played. You may miss viewing the the initial live piece of action, although you always hear it. But, you always have your head up and are watching the two dozen replays and super slow-mo that follow, The important thing is, you can tell by the vibe in the commentators voice whether play is starting to get exciting or not.

@@CodyTheReactor 90% test matches are boring. But some are amazing. For example, there is a batsman called Tendulkar. Against Pakistan, he would get out at low scores because he would try to hit a specific shot (his favourite go-to shot). But he gets caught out every time (it was his weakness). When he needed to keep India in the game, Tendulkar scored 250+ and batted for 2 days and did not attempt the shot even once! Imagine the discipline. But I can see why a casual would find it boring. But those who enjoy the game enjoy these stories. There are many like that. Once a batsman called Rahul Dravid batted for 2 days and faced 800+ balls. When we were almost sure of losing (that too, in the worst possible way), he and his partner batted for 2 whole days! Each day of that match, the 2 teams came up with strategies to neutralize the opposition's strength and their own weakness. But I can understand why it would be boring for a casual. I don't enjoy them now a days either since work and stuff keeps me busy now.

When t20 came out, people thought it would kill test cricket. It didn't. Instead it ended up hurting one day cricket.
Test cricket has a totally different flavor than a limited overs game. Its like watching a TV series vs. Watching a movie.

The mental and physical toughness required for test cricket is unparalleled. T20 and one day cricket is a batsman game. They are not even contests between bat and ball. India may be the epicentre of T20 but I am sure that the Indian players and fans would not trade their recent test series win over Australia for a hundred T20 wins. All cricketers and true fans know that the 5 day game is the ultimate test of their skill and mental toughness.

If a five day match blows your mind, before 1939 they quite often played matches with no time limit at all - the last timeless test match lasted 12 days (weather prevented play on four of these days), and ended in a draw - the game had to be abandoned because the England team had to catch the boat home from South Africa.

Then ofcourse I had to grow up and start working and responsibilities and so on and I can't really ask my boss for a 5 day leave to go watch cricket, so I have switched to more ODI and T20 matches. I do sometimes watch test matches on live streams at work if there isn't too much work that day (secretly ofcourse).

Never been that interested in the shorter versions and will always be a longer format Test cricket fan, it’s hard to describe why it’s so ingrained in me and why I love it so much as a cricket fan but I’ll try…
Imagine long, hot, sticky summer days with the cricket on in the background all day, you don’t have to sit there glued to the TV, you can dip in and dip out, have it on the radio if you’re at work, in the garden or in the car.
It’s the soundtrack of the summer to me, it’s always been there. It’s something that just stands out in the modern world, something that is slow in pace and gentle in a world where the pace of life is so much quicker than its ever been, it’s full of nostalgia, nuance, romanticism and memories of my childhood and it’s always been there in a kind of comforting way…
One day and T20 cricket is like a shiny magazine that you read but forget about quickly, Test cricket is like your favourite old novel that engrosses you and the story lives on in your mind forever.

Five days is still done. The Ashes series is a five-match test cricket series played between Australia and England. The series is played every two years, with the next series to be held in Australia beginning in December of 2021. The name comes from the fact that in 1882 when Australia won, the bails were burnt and their ashes put in the trophy awarded after each match.

  • @OTDPlantagenet
    @OTDPlantagenet 3 роки тому +26

Test Match Cricket really is the only form of the game that matters. everything else is sparklers and tin foil. I'm not saying that isn't important to the game. That represents revenue and revenue is what is required to turn the cogs. But, when it comes down to intensity and one persons will over another, Test Cricket is where it is at. I notice myself, t20! "yeah yeah, another t20 match, miss this one and tune into the one tomorrow and I don't feel like I have missed a thing. The same with One Day, to an extent. But Test match Cricket is entirely different, it is more about the contest of one mans will over the other or one teams combined will over the other, than it is about anything else. And it is so intense that men go into mental melt down during the course of a series, and some times never recover, and if they do, it is usually with the help of some sports psychologist. This is where the game is at its' most intense. In the 90's when Shane Warne was in action, and the English day was happening during the australian night. I would drive home from work in the dark, and the game would have already started in England. I would be driving home with the radio tuned into the test match, listening to the english commentators, who were the best commentators, describing the game as it unfolded, and they would describe the game as meandering, and then Shane Warne would come on to bowl, and they would describe it as " only two minutes ago this pitch was dull and lifeless, and Shane Warne has come on and all of a sudden the english batsmen are looking at each delivery as if the ball is going to land on a mine". And, it was so good, and so intense, as soon as I arrived home from work, I would sit down with my sons, who were already watching, and be riveted to the action as it unfolded. And that is what test cricket is like, every day a new adventure, every day a new drama. and, at the end of the test you may or may not have a winner, but that does not really matter. because the only thing that really matters in test match is who wins the series, and only one test needs to be won to establish that. During the course of a series many men will suffer from either melt down or injury, and only the very toughest mentally and physically will survive either. Just look at the most recent series between australia and india for an example. The indian team that took the field for the first test of that series, did not resemble the indian team that took the field for the fifth test in just about any way. Only the really tough indians mentally stood up in the end, and they won the series against all odds, and they showed themselves to be magnificent champions. They achieved more in that series than they would have by winning a thousand limited overs tournaments. sorry to rave on, but this came from the heart.

T20 is like a sprint and its nice and quick to play for fun between mates. T20 or shorter makes the game more accessible. At school we would play what we called T10 as it meant we could finish within the PE lesson. However, for professional cricket I don't see test cricket disappearing completely. Having the endurance to play over potentially 5 days is a marathon and a completely different skill set. There is a famous regular test series between England and Australia called the Ashes. While not many have the time to go to the test matches, so less money return, I still believe there is a huge following nationally that are emotionally invested enough to keep an eye on the score throughout the day. I find test matches are more about national pride than money.

Very Indian centric, the move to 50 over one day matches in the late 70’s with Australian Millionaire Kerry Packer bankrolling the first pro league, introducing day/night games, coloured clothing, amazing camera work ( production team going on to run Fox sports ) , big wages, music song and dance. The crowds for one day cricket didn’t drop in Australia anyway till 20/20 came in. Same arguments about 20/20 were just repeats of 30 years before.

I think that T20 is 100% a TV sport, 50 over matches are part TV part radio sports and Test cricket is 100% a radio sport where you listen to it as you are doing other things.
Attending matches live is also a similar thing where T20 is like a soccer match or baseball game, a 50 over match is like a baseball double header and are an event in itself that is over in an evening. A Test (or a 4 day domestic game) is a long lazy day where you might be at the game, have a sleep for a couple of hours, do your crossword, work on your laptop or be in and out of the stadium (depending on how close you live). The 5 day match also depends on who is playing. Some matches have a half/quarter full stadium and go slowly, some are packed to the rafters and is a party atmosphere all day long.

Test matches are typically not watched from the stadium throughout. Folks come and go and watch when they can otherwise they follow it via the media. In the old days the newspapers and the radio which you could switch on in your home and also in your workplace. Some folk would select a day or days to watch and attend at their leisure. The result was as important in those times. The shorter form is watched in full and that attracts the fans today. All good stuff.

Please bear in mind that when the bowler's team mate bowls the next over it is from the 'other' end of the pitch and not from the same end as the graphic seems to suggest at 6:02. Unlike in baseball, everybody changes round 180 degrees to 'orientate' on the opposite end. After another 6 balls they change round again and always bear in mind that a bowler is not permitted to bowl consecutive overs; it must be bowler A followed by B followed by A etc. until one of them is relieved by bowler C.

*Test is still my favorite. As you progress you will understand the test format it's little different every team bats twice and yes no body can watch it for 5 days it's slow game but as game progresses it becomes very interesting. Day 4th and 5 th culminate into ultimate climax. Of course it starts at 9;30 people go to their work and game end around 5 every day people generally check score on mobile apps and as match becomes interesting they switch to tv and mostly watch just 15 min highlights of whole day in evening but generally people watch 4th or 5th day full coz match becomes like a one day or T20 sort by day 5. Eng and AUS play Ashes it's 5 Test match series very popular. Recently India defeated Aus in Aus which is so far the best Indian performance so far in Test Cricket. T20 is typical commercialization of the game , has lots of marketing thing involved and it's the only format that can make inroads in Europe and States. They gonna have Minor Leage of Cricket in states. Mark Wahlberg owns a team in Carribbean and that Actor is Stephen Fry he is an English Anchor was there in V for Vendetta movie as newa Anchor*

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game

Just a small point is t20 wasnt a new version where i live we played t20 in the evenings after work. I played one semi final and around the edge the local taxis switched on their lights to help us see as it was so dark. Various versions were played everywhere in the uk. Tests are the ultimate test of everything. My sons play at the level below full professional and play 3 day games and its bloody hard work

Test matches for the win, as fun as limited overs cricket is it's designed as a run scoring spectacle heavily in favour of the batsman. Test matches are much more balanced between bat and ball and a true reflection of cricket. There was nothing better than spending an entire day at newlands watching touring sides take on the proteas, and the stadium would be pretty full.

Good knowledge but the match in 1844 between USA and Canada was just the first International match. Cricket has allegedly been played in the South East of England since around 1650.
The question regarding which form of the game is best must consider the variables.
Strategy in the game is often based on the weather, along with the deterioration of the ball and the pitch.
In Twenty20 there is insufficient play for the above to come into play. It therefore becomes a fast bowl, big bat duel. In order to ensure more excitement a rule was introduced to make half the fielders remain near the batsman for the first half of the innings. This ensured batsman might risk hitting over their heads....
Test cricket is much more variable with a new ball available to the fielding team after 80 overs or 480 balls.
One day International (ODI) matches of 50/60 overs is a more strategic game. County Cricket and Sunday League matches have always been this length. Enjoy whichever cricket you choose...

I do not understand why ALL these cricket videos say "on each 'side' of the pitch there is a wicket." They are not on the sides of the pitch but at each 'end' of the pitch. Batsmen run from end to end not side to side; it makes no sense saying that.

The first international game was between America and Canada, but it was played at the club level well before that. I hate 20/20 it's all about smashing the ball out of the park. Get a score as high as you can as fast as you can. Were test and to some point 1 day is more tactical and skilled. Not just see how many 6's you can hit.

The major T20 leagues around the world are Indian Premier Leageue (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL Australia), T20 Blast (currently the Vitality Blast in England), Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and leagues in Sri Lanka, New Zealand, USA, and elsewhere.
In a few days te have THE HUNDRED beginning in England where the T20 is being cut down to 100 balls an innings and the English Cricket board is pouring a great deal of money into it to capture the attention of those who are not 'regular cricket watchers' and attract star players from all over the world. It was scheduled to begin last year but Covid-19 put paid to it.
There are also T10 leagues dotted around the world with innings of just 10 overs (60 balls) but they are not as prominent as T20.

1:03 Cricket like many big sports such as Football ⚽, Rugby (both Union & League), even Baseball (oldest known reference is from 1755 in the diary of an Englishman William Bray from Surrey) is from England. Although there are claims that it's from Belgium, the Netherlands, etc. The game is known to be around since 1500s or 1600s. Still the 1844 Cricket match was just the first ever International Cricket match but the first ever Cricket match is hard to say, first ever recorded official Cricket match would probably be some match played between 2 Cricket Clubs in the 1700s. I think even English County teams started playing each other years before the 1844's International match. Some County Cricket Clubs (CCC) even formally existed before the 1844 match like Sussex CCC & Nottingham CCC (informally many more existed since 1700s itself).
1:32 Yes, a Tea Break is essentially just a drinks or snacks break after about couple hours of play since Lunch Break. So in a day's play of Test match there are 2 breaks.
3:39 Yeah excited fans (like me) will try to explain things in the comments whenever they first watch the video. Usually fans are excited to see non traditional people (i.e. from non Cricketing nations) showing interest, so a sense of obligation to explain this assumed to be complicated sport is there for many.
    10:54 He's Stephen Fry.
13:43 In India (& I'm sure other Cricketing nations too) we grew up listening to radio commentary when a match is on & we can't watch TV. In school I used to bring my small radio & listen to commentary & scores even in the middle of a period through earphones hidden in my school uniform 😂 so teacher doesn't see it & pass on the score to friends sitting on the other side of the classroom, office goers probably had radios on the desks too. Now we've mobile to do just that & stay updated with scores & ball by ball commentary.
14:07 😂 Yes in Cricketing nations we do hear about this American or North American attention span issue being a hindrance for our game. I suppose match highlights would be good for you.
This was a good reaction video, both you & your seem to have picked up a lot about the game already.
I've posted 6 links of *Science of Sport - Cricket* in the community tab which will explain some more things, I think your dad will enjoy watching it too. I'll wait for the reaction videos for those.

I watch all formats but I prefer one day cricket to T20 and most of all I love Test cricket; it is the real game. People 'follow' test cricket avidly even if they cannot be there at the venue. It will be on television all day and on the radio (which is a favourite of mine as I can do all my normal things whilst listening), online, and you can catch up with daily highlight programmes and reviews. It is still perfectly normal to inform friends and acquaintances what the current score is and at wekends people playing in their own games will manage to follow what is happening. It is a real event spread over five days. I all honesty most people who watch a T20 game enjoy it but within a couple of weeks probably can't remember the details (like even who won it).

but it's hard to play cricket and faking injuries like in football just makes the condition worse as the batter doesn't get to bat anymore. thickness of the ball is very high and an unfair rule is "slips" (positioned just near the wicket keeper----- the guy with the gloves) doesn't get to wear gloves

Personally I like Test match more than T20
Test cricket has it's own beauty .

So far just loving the game in general. I think people are overthinking the different types. Just play or enjoy whichever is best for you. I’m disabled so after doing a 5 day one I’m beat and probably never will go above 3+ hours lol it’s too draining

@@CodyTheReactor yeah bro . I can understand . I just wanted to let you know that there are still people out there who love test cricket . The video could have made you think that test cricket is dying . so I just shared my opinion as a friend .
      And finally
I love what you do please continue doing that !

Of course no worries, I always would rather have a meaningful conversation than arguements. So I just meant in general any time frame the games played in, as long as it’s being played!! We appreciate you sir!!
