    Pretty sure the opening riff ends on B, not A..... E --3--3--5/7, A --5--, D --7/9--

Holy Stich. Awesome lesson. I love it when you do Hendrix! I've played this song for a long time, but just by memorization. I never could understand what was really going on with it. Now I can see it. When you played that Gmaj7....Holy Stich.

I love this type of lesson. Hearing a dissection of the “mental space”, as you say, is exactly what I need right now. Great to listen to! I’d like to hear you speak like this about a more simple piece, maybe like the solo in Eric Clapton’s “Cocaine.”

keep in mind Hendrix use his thumb to grab the root notes often which affects which shapes he goes for.

As usual, I love your approach and this challenge to make the chords ‘disappear’. There is always some sort of chordal move to be found if patient enough…and vice versa…always a riff to be found in a chordal movement.

A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy far far away, The Stitch MethHeads lived peacefully playing riffs from the Blues Jedi-s from years past. The Empire was not happy with the discussions of major and minor scales and boxes, modes and the general frivolity of their endeavors and sought to eliminate Obe Yuan Ian-k-nobe. Their blast from the Death Star knocked out his power hoping to put an end to his insolent insurrection. Yet, the good guys won and the "harmony" of the 1, 4 , and 5 ( and even a 6) live on throughout the land!

But the empire did not give up, and outlawed all pentatonic boxes except box one, made "mode" a four letter word, and said the 3rd 5th and 7th could no longer be flatted. As a final insult, The Empire mandated that each day everyone had to listen to Gordon Lighfoot's "The Men of the Edmund Fitzgerald"..... After 2 days of listening, many volunteered to go "down with the ship" while others set out on a pilgrimage to Lake Gichigoomie.....

Oooooooo. Someone give me a guitar, stat!
This is where your lessons really push the envelope. Some metal head kid might have subscribed wanting to learn guitar and thinks "meh. I don't want to play hendrix". But the prize is inside!
This really sheds a light on how the most basic idea of pentatonic and theory can be applied to write songs as iconic and groundbreaking as hendrix.
And the homework/contest makes it fun! It's like you've handed a classroom full of children the 3 primary colors, showed us how to mix and make new ones, and let us loose to ...create. 😁
I can't wait to hear the masterpieces!

    Hi Ian
Do you think Hendrix had the theory knowledge as you explained this song or do you think it all came together for him by ear and feel.
I often wonder about this with him, Clapton etc. because they were all so young back in the day?

Regarding that Bb6 -- is it wrong to think of it as Gm7 ?

    • @marin4311

Gm7 is an inversed chord of Bb6.

    • @j80quicker
      @j80quicker 5 років тому

I think of that as the "Lenny" chord. I often attach names to chord shapes based on songs I first heard them in. You should see my list of Steely Dan chords.
