  • I have a love hate relationship with the Hostel franchise so I thought I would sit down and watch all three to really decide once and for all if these movies are for me. What do you think about this franchise and Eli Roth as a director?

HI Sarah. I'm an old lady of 67. I love horror movies and one of my faves is Hostel. Eli Roth and Rob Zombie are two of my favorite directors. Thank you for the video on Hostel. I discovered your channel by accident and it was a happy accident. You are my people. BTW, my kids are grown, but they grew up watching horror movies with their mom. And they are fine!! Love you.

For me, gore doesn’t make something disturbing. In fact, the more gore seen on screen you just kind of get desensitised to the blood and guts (which you know isn't real). What makes Hostel so disturbing is the realism, and that it weirdly places you in a similar position to the Elite Hunters - paying money to see people get tortured. It makes you uncomfortable, and plots like the girl with the eye really stick with you long after the credits have rolled. That's what makes it disturbing, the way it affects you psychologically.

    • @jessiesmyth1949

I think the original and Part two is Perfect. The disturbing doesn't come from the gore alone, but the motivations for the wealthy club members. The sexual exploitation in the first is a parallel to how the members of the cult are treating human flesh. In that respect, the guys are getting what is coming to them. They are literally going to a tourist destination to use women for their flesh. Part 2 far exceeds the first one for me. The viewer cares about the girls, their plight doesn't seem warranted. Who didn't love Lorna. Part 3 was garbage.

I think you just accidentally proved the franchise’s point. In both the first and second films, a group of people go on a trip to Europe for their own pleasure. It’s the same plot, the genders are just swapped. I feel like people who claim the first film comments on the objectification of women wilfully ignore the part where the women luring these guys to their demise are 100% in on it.

Hostel is really the only Eli Roth directed film/franchise that I somewhat enjoy, the others I have zero care for (Green Inferno maybe once every several years.) The first Hostel is one of the first horror films that has really stuck with me. The first movie has a scene where a guy says if you drug up the women you can do whatever you want to them. It's really gross tbh and has Eli Roth written all over it. Then there's his dropping the F slur all the time. It's his homophobic and sexist personality all over it. Have you ever seen this lil' monologue in Death Proof? That lil' rant is Roth all over. He's awful.

One thing that I really found intriguing is how that was really the era of Americans being really patriotic and pro-USA and how that resulted in kinda dismissing other people and treating other countries as second rate, especially post soviet countries. The way the guys in the first movie treat the European people in the countries they are tourists as people who don't really deserve respect or humanity and they are just disgusting to all the people there. Especially the treatment of woman reminded me of mail-order bride attitude. They thought that they could kinda do anything to these women because they were from poorer countries.

The disturbing parts to me are the idea of being held against your will and tortured.
I think at the time these movies were released kidnappings and murders overseas were headline news.
Roth tapped into that fear perfectly.

So I was probably 10 when Hostel came out, I watched it with my dad, to this day we'll randomly quote Horror Movies to eachother, Hostel is one of them. I have to admit though I actually can't watch the eye scene up until her death, it actually horrified me, even today where I love Horror films, I still can't watch it.
Hostel 2 is definitely my Favourite of the trillogy. Beth's a great final girl (I also like the actress Lauren German who went on to star in the show "Lucifer") I've seen a couple hundred Horror films, Hotel 2 would be in my Top 50.
Hostel 3, for what it is, I'm fine with, it's definitely not a good film. But it was a unique take compared to the first two. If Hostel 3 was a stand alone film I probably wouldn't hate it, but as it's a "Hostel" film it's pretty bad.

The objectification of women in Hostel at least served a thematic purpose. The whole point is that what the rich people do in paying to do whatever they want to the trafficked people is not that different from, or at least a natural progression of, the American tourists paying to do whatever they want to the sex workers. I don't love gratuitous nudity/sex when it feels like there's no purpose, but in the case of Hostel there is at least the basic thematic message.

Hostel 2 was my favorite of the bunch too but it's difficult to rewatch. The first Hostel had one dimensional characters that are mostly not likable, so while it's still horrifying, it's a lot a lot easier to keep at a distance. With Part 2 all of the characters are relatable, so what happens to them (especially Lorna), is disturbing.

I think as a teen male watching Hostel, I thought “Oh wow these guys are just being dudes and whoa they’re dying.” Only saw it the once til I took a film class where we watched it and broke down some themes, like how the torture rooms resemble the sex workers’ rooms when the guys are at the brothel, except the colors are browned out and grimey at the abandoned building. I don’t think it’s an intelligent film really, it is kind of just babies-first-exploitation, but I guess there’s more substance than I realized.
The second film, I really just found to be an enjoyable horror with good writing and solid characters. The Elizabeth Bathory scene with the bathing in blood I found to be actually disturbing and a great opening kill. Uhhhh I didn’t even know there was a Hostel III but I’ll take you word for it and not even bother lol.

im almost twice your age(54) and have been watching horror since i was about 6..sneaking down to watch The Exorcist lol....i have been watching u for years now and will probably never agree about 2000s movies being the best but my kids grew up watching those...my oldest is about your age(34) but i love your videos and how u give your opinions and reviews and tier charts....i follow your other page also! I totally agree with your ranking of these movies....i liked Hostel for what it was when it first came out and love your description...OF COURSE its fun watching horrible things happeningn to unlikable ppl...but i loved the second one the best and the backstory of the second one and i didnt even think about them both being in Desperate Housewives until u mentioned it and i had to laugh!!! And the third movie should never have been made! Albeit i did find the back story more disturbing in the second one but i grew up in the era of good movies like Last House on the Left, I spit on Your Grave and Cannibal Holocaust and Faces of Death AND one of my favorite horror movies ever is Martyrs!...and the Hostel movies....no, i do not find them disturbing

I REALLY like the 1st “Hostel” man. It’s just a great lil self contained, very simple, “fish outta water”, horror movie. Also, the actor who was the MC in the 1st Hostel. I really liked him a lot. Also, his Character is definitely solidified as 1 of the many of BADASS Horror movie “Final Guys”.
    (Update)
I just found “Jay Hernandez” who is the MC in Hostel. He’s gonna be in Eli’s new ThankGiving🥳 The one with “Addison Rae” for some fucking reason.

I need to do a rewatch of Hostel III so I may give my opinion of the series ( I've only seen it once). That being said...❤️❤️❤️ the Depeche Mode t-shirt! I used to have same one; I bought it when I saw them live for the first time, in '93.

I've never seen the 3rd one, but I do remember liking the first two. I might check out the third one, but since Eli Roth wasn't directing I skipped it. He was one of the writers though according to IMDb.

I have all 3 I like the first 2 and bearly like the 3rd. Yes I find them disturbing but that's what some horror movies focus on. To me what really gets to me is what can happen to tourists in foreign countries. I too have heard those tales especially after the fall of the Soviet Union in those republics or in Brazil and Dominican Republic. Anyway good reviews and cool video Sarah!👉😃👈

Honestly, this should've been just one standalone movie. The sequels are so repetitive and feel really disjointed from the first one. I liked the mystique of the cult in the first movie.

i actually watched the first hostel recently and as someone who lives in europe i have to tell you, i laughed my ass off when they were showing the landscapes of slovakia with ominous music in the background because this is something i literally see everyday in my country too and it felt weird to even think of it as so scary

Great video! I love the 1st two movies, and watch them whenever they're showing on PlutoTV. Paxton and Oli are a-holes/so cringy in the 1st (I think Josh isn't for the most part) but they're likeable enough to me where I don't want them to die and still root for them. I at least want the main protagonists to be likeable in my movies. I personally plan on never watching the 3rd movie (watched a summary video about it- I think Spookyrice- and that's all I need); it visually doesn't even look like a Hostel movie and it's in America. Also, my jaw dropped on that critic rating for it, that's why you can't trust them😂.

I actually thought the hostel movies as terrifying cause I remembered a gory part from the 1st movie I once watched as a child, but now you talking about it and seeing the shorts clips in your video (plus your commentary) makes me realize they're not that terrifying at all, I just watched it as a child for some reason but as an adult is totally different

You've got a good point - I really like the 2nd one, but I am sure I've seen the 1st one so many more times. I think some of it is also, I end up liking the final guy from the first and hate how he's just killed off at the beginning of 2 - I would have loved to see him used differently. And yea, 3 isn't good lol

I think what you’re not acknowledging is the time period these movies came out in. These movies were part of the post 9/11 period of horror movies. There was an increase of the fear of foreign people and places and an irrational feeling that Americans were under threat at all times. Maybe you’re too young to remember but these films fueled a sentiment of “America First, America Only”. There are plenty of essays out there about post 9/11 horror you should read.

I completely agree with what you say, however, there definitely are some John Kramers walking around. I think it was a while back where a man woke up with a bomb collar, forced to "play a game" and he got blown up because he failed his missions which included robbing a bank.
