  • Thinking about physics? Here are 3 reasons (and a bonus mini 4th reason) why you should study this wonderful subject!
Hey everyone, today we're looking at PRACTICAL reasons to study physics, whether that's at high school level, or all the way through to a degree and a PhD.
Of course, studying physics gives you a deep insight into the workings of the universe - but this is a fairly abstract reason to learn the subject. Instead, I wanted to give you some practical reasons to spend time messing around with equations and scientific equipment!
    0:00 - Overview
2:33 - Analytical Skills (get real good at mathematics)
6:44 - Understanding the Scientific Method (thinking critically and fact-checking people's arguments)
20:31 - Computational Physics (learn how to code as part of an education in physics!)
25:01 - Bonus: Job Prospects (many jobs in many different quantitative fields)
The point I'm trying to make in this video is that studying physics allows you to learn a large range of highly useful skills. Yes, you could pick up these skills individually elsewhere, but I believe that physics gives you the chance of learning a little bit of each of them. It makes you a well-rounded person (but then, I am biased aren't I?)
Analytical Skills - any bit of mathematics that can be applied to our universe will be in some way studied by a physicist.
Understanding the Scientific Method - you will also get a deep understanding of how science works, which will give you a framework to fact-check anybody that may tell you anything that sounds wrong to you. I apply this skill in my day-to-day life all the time!
Computational Physics - programming now comes built in to physics degrees. This is because we can use programming to simulate experiments that we don't yet have the time, money, or knowledge to conduct in real life.
Job Prospects - Aside from going into research and teaching, there are a large number of quantitative fields that look favourably upon physicists (such as data science, investment banking, and lots more).
If you enjoyed this video then please subscribe for more fun physics content! I like to explain fairly advanced physics concepts, but without needing to have a physics degree to understand them!

@Creative Tinkering agreed with your points but there is one more thing its shown that math is abstract in nature and thought u just need it to do 1+1 and calculations but its not true math in reality its such a beauty the logics and completeness and then applied in physics its just great but people think what graphs would help em with but the fact math's each thing is a defining and dynamic world thing but whatever people like you exists still so we have faith in its future

Different wood would definitely make a difference to the sound of the electric guitar.
As a part of the vibrations being picked up by the electromagnetic pickup, also get absorbed into the wood.
Different types of wood will definitely influence the amount of vibrations being absorbed or reflected. Which in turn will effect the amount being induced into the guitar pickup.
Different woods will provide different inputs induced into the pickup.
Adjusting and tuning the pedal or amp, merely adjusts the output of the vibrations which already entered the system.
    Different wood= different sounds

I have Physics Ph.D. and I went on to work in trading, which adds an element of excitement and danger for me that academia didn't. The physics skills I've used, include programming (I was an experimentalist even), math, deep data quality analysis, math, analyzing the thermodynamics of overclocked hardware in datacenters that was overheating, being comfortable with chaos and mess and chipping away at the mess to organize it into something tame and controllable (very useful in IT), understanding optical properties of fiber optics, having a basic knowledge of electronics to install servers and work with vendors to install power systems for server racks, and defining processes that people follow and allow automation - I do process design a lot. The trading industry has some of the highest paying jobs and they hire a lot of people with physics degrees. The #2 guy at Citadel Investments, LLC has a physics Ph.D. - probably makes an insane amount of money.

I say I'm proof that you don't have to be smart to get a PhD in physics - it just requires hard work and the motivation to do that work. Motivation comes from being really fascinated by the subject, which is true of studying for a PhD in any field. Imagine eating your favorite food or listening to your favorite song 12+ hours/day for years! You gotta really love it. Grad school in general can be socially isolating and I had to find a way to put in the long hours and still keep my sanity. I wouldn't say that it's impossible. But it's probably pretty hard. Studying physics at university would be already probing your tolerance for frustration. Doing it on your own it's not very probably that you would get to that stage (often enough). However encountering an excellent professor or at least a couple of excellently prepared lectures often help overcoming frustration. And unless you're focussing on theoretical physics it's pretty hard to find the equipment and resources needed to do serious modern physics stuff. For doing research and development on latest high tech quite often one or more physicists are involved. Undergraduate physics won't be enough for that work which is at the most advanced edge of science sometimes. You can teach yourself fundamentals of physics and possibly to a pretty high level. But I think that there're some limitations to that approach.

Guitar sound difference is to find out If the pickups react to the material around them, if you can prove that, It is certain the sound will be affected by the density of the wood.
Simple experiment is to take the strings off of 2 guitars of the same design and specification, calculate the volume and density of the guitars for comparison to make sure there is a noticeable difference, plug in each guitar.
Create a measured force in the same place 20 times each on both guitars and calculate the average frequency for both.
You will then be able to study these measurements side by side and determine a result - my hypothesis is that density of the material correlates with sound difference and the further away in density the materials are, the more difference in sound there will be.
I start a degree this year - I'm 31 and I feel like I'm a million years behind everyone else but determined to make a difference out there :)

It's so funny you mentioned the "wood" argument... I'm fully on the camp that the wood makes a huge difference, but that is purely anecdotally and experimental with my own ears... I'm almost certain I can tell the difference between basswood and say Ash top or mahogany... some people shut me down so quick... I've been playing guitars like 20 years including extended range... 7 strings 8 strings ect and I do have a preference when it comes to the wood... but maybe I haven't experimented enough across different types... I've played cheap bass wood guitars (ibanez) and expensive (JPP music man)... and the wood was enough to make me do a swap for a custom ash top mahogany bodied guitar... You can hear the difference before you even plug the guitar in

I have worked in industry as a nuclear physicist for ten years. I changed back to mechanical engineering. My first physics job I got (which was my favourite job) was obtained because I was a time served engineer with a 1st class physics degree. The company of physicists had problems talking to engineers, who carried out design of nuclear plant. They thought, "this guy's an engineer and a decent physicist". The job was amazing, I was sent everywhere to talk to engineers in a nomenclature they understood. Best job ever and it paid fairly well.

hi thank you for this video I've been wanting to go to physics ever since I started high school but something really bothers me i really like to study theoretical physics however I see a lot of news about how it's not in a good state or titles like "the end of theoretical physics "and stuff and my parents are pressuring me to choose a major with more income like engineering or computer science but i really love physics and understanding how things work and patterns and stuff like that but I'm afraid that if I enter the field I'd feel that I'm not needed there or that I'd regret going for theoretical physics could you please give some suggestions?

    • @black1blade74
      @black1blade74 3 роки тому

It depends what they mean by the end of theoretical physics. True progress in fundalmental physics has slowed a lot since the LHC hasn't discovered anything beyond the standard model but there are still many processes in nature that we don't fully understand and need really brainy theorists to pick apart!!

I did an engineering physics undergrad and am doing an aerospace engineering grad program right now with a computational physics thesis project. Don't necessarily discount the engineers, you can do quite alot of physics there. Even among the physicists most don't do astro theory related things but rather closer to materials because that's practical and where alot of the money goes.

@@alexanderdvanbalderen9803 it was a double major in electrical engineering and physics basically; learned quite alot but it was pretty hard. And the engineering part helped me get a job out of undergrad; my current employer pays for grad which is a great way to do it with no debt but I study after a full days work which is pretty tiring. Both Python and C++ are good skills to have, I'd learn both if you can, good luck
