The Nutcracker Prince 1990 is a good cartoon, have you seen it? It adapts the book's plot very well and is quite cute. I loved this story because of this cartoon
For me, I greatly enjoyed the animated Nutcracker movie with Kiefer Sutherland, it had way more charm and heart put into it compared to the terrible one with the Nazi rats!
Barbie Swan Lake also brought back some plot points from the first draft of the story. That magic crown that protects her from evil spells you could swear was a merchandising addition? Actually a thing in that OG draft only.
Fun fact: Kelly Sheridan was the first voice actress of Barbie in the 21st century and also the actress who voiced her for the longest time between 2001 and 2016 and some few years in between, beginning with this movie.

Our first grade music teacher had us watch this and I didn't realize it than, but it was my first exposure to Tim Curry. Naturally, his Mouse King is the best part, and what I remember most. Fun fact: Kelly Sheridan (Barbie) and Kirby Morrow (Eric) would both later go on to play Sango and Miroku in InuYasha. They were also love interests in that anime
Ok so, I have nowhere to put this but this is the chance for me to get it off my chest regarding the CGI animated Barbie movies: Despite the insane amount of pink, sparkles, and girly whimsy… despite the horrific designs of some character models namely the infamous Bibble and disgusting Mermaidia sea turtle… Despite the dated advertisement campaigns that put Barbie as the epitome of the modern girl (I’m looking at you terrible Rockin’ Rappin’ Barbie): I’ve ALWAYS considered the era of Barbie films, starting with Nutcracker and ending around 2011-12, to have an undeniable _elegance._ The way they tell the story, the way the characters talk to eachother is VASTLY different from the 6-second-attention span of more current children’s animated entertainment, especially on UA-cam. Theres a maturity to the interactions, such as the ones between Azura and Elina in Fairytopia. The character relationships, though not particularly complex, are treated with a certain level of respect, even with the narmy or silly environment, such as with Barbie and Raquelle in Fairy Secret. They manage to give this odd, paced, dignity to the stories they depict despite all the hyper girliness, and I picked up on it as a kid. There was a spirituality to some films such as with Barbie Mariposa; again not incredibly deep, just noticeable to me as a kid in a way which helps it stand out from other animated films. Even as Barbie started looking more… alien… around Barbie in A Mermaid Tale, there was still a level of dignity to the characters and stories; even with more ‘wackiness’. The greater focus on chapstick comedy in the films afterwards (Barbie a Fairy Secret for instance) was when things started to slip. But I still consider Barbie a Fairy Secret a decent way of depicting Barbie in a modern, even meta setting. However, it definitely started getting a little stale with Barbie and the Magic Door and VERY stale with the _third_ Prince and the Pauper spoof. After Fashion Fairytale and Fairy Secret, both of which strayed from the typical Fairy-tale timelessness, that’s when it generally lost its magic. Barbie and life in the Dreamhouse, though I watched it, started to stray from the initial magic. But it did make up for it in its sharper comedy. This is also why I was originally comedically against the announcement of the Barbie 2023 film, as it seemed to go TOO meta, and TOO comedically satirical; obviously afterwards, I heard good things about it. Barbie’s original and current campaigns are all about being the modern girl, and the older ones definitely had a fun retro feel to it that many are looking back with a nostalgic appreciation of the aesthetic. Barbie Diaries sit of has this appreciative atmosphere of the stereotypical Highschool environment, with a calming homely feel, even though it isn’t part of the same collection as the fairytale Barbie films (both in setting and aesthetic). In the end, I just wanted to clarify why I believe the fairytale films of Barbie, the ones more timeless in nature, had such an impact on me and many others; beyond the pink, sparkly, and silly. They looked like jokes and sounded like jokes… but surprisingly could have engaging or contemplative moments. The films should definitely be elevated beyond just being pink girly nonsense and being the origin of Bibble. And Tika. Dear god Tika is so cursed.
Omg and I can’t forget; a commentator below mentioned it but the music. Often the music and songs could be very well put together (especially in Barbie and the Pauper) and as one commenter said below, certain ballets such as Swan Lake were definitely films that had an appreciation for the music of the source material.
6:32 Hmm… an evil bat working for an evil rat with a celebrity voice. 🤔 This is starting to feel like a Disney movie that would be criminally overlooked.
One Last Fun Fact: In an attempt to heal the nation, on February 14, 2021, podcast hosts Richard Martin and Alexander "AJ" Jones of the Cult Popture Podcast released an 18+ hour comprehensive podcast reviewing the 37 Barbie films. The retrospective took over a month to prepare and features numerous guest speakers as well as an original song created specially for the podcast.
To quote the late great Norm Macdonald and something I’m sure Kelly Sheridan might be thinking a lot about is “I miss seeing real comics, Shecky Greene and Buddy Hackett, those types. I like straight stand-up, talking about the Olympics and why I feel obligated to watch them. 'Why am I watching archery at 4 in the afternoon?'‘
HEEY!!! That's my print!! The Dipper and Mabel one!! It was SO COOL to have Doug buy it at my artist alley table, and now I get to re-live the excitement all over again!! Thank you!! :D💖
To be fair, the CGI in this is wonky because it's early 2000s CGI on a direct-to-video budget. But the animation DID improve in the movies as time went on. I really hope he considers reviewing more of the Barbie movies at some point, because even though they're largely supposed to be movie-length commercials, the cast and crew making them could've easily just spat out something in five minutes, but they didn't. They actually put time and effort into making each one special and making sure they taught the intended young audience a lesson. "Princess and the Pauper" and "The Island Princess" are the two that I think come the closest to rivaling a Disney production.
I love that a previous episode's opening skit was that he was willing to watch even the frraking Care Bears Nutcracker to get some more christmas goodness, but the Barbie version with Tim Curry and actual ballet dancing is somehow where he draws the line 😅
Mid-30s male here. From watching this review, this movie looks surprisingly…wholesome? I mean, it’s a girly movie based on a girly doll, but it appears she plays a strong lead who is instrumental in helping resolve the story’s conflict and taking down the villain. And the damsel-in-distress cliche is completely turned on its side when SHE sneaks into the castle, braves and improvises her way past the guards, and rescues the nutcracker and other hero characters herself. And the role she plays in instructing the little girl in the dance studio seems like it might be an attempt to connect with the film’s little-girl-audience and encourage them to persevere even when things get hard. I mean, the film seems to make a genuine attempt at communicating to little girls that a lady can persevere and be as much a hero as a man. And it isn’t annoyingly loud, overly fast-paced or obnoxious, but rather benign overall…I’m no dad, but if I had a young daughter who was watching this in the background, I don’t think I’d be terribly annoyed. To any of the ladies who see this comment and actually watched this movie, I’m genuinely curious, do you think my take on what I saw here is accurate? In other words, as the film’s intended audience at the time, would you agree or disagree with how I think it might have impacted you when you first saw it?
I was guesting at a con with Barbie's voice actor Kelly Sheridan. I asked her what project she enjoyed doing most of all. She told me that she enjoyed doing this movie as Barbie because she got the chance to work with Tim Curry. It was like a dream come true.
Please also review the Barbie Christmas Carol movie. Barbie in Swan Lake was my introduction to ballet and I love it the ballet movies. Even if they aren’t that good a lot of the time. 😅
He just made a grave mistake covering a barbie movie, now all the barbie fans who grew up with all the movies are gonna come out of the freaking woodwork to yell at him to cover the others. Which is hilarious considering he's literally the worst audience to have for those kind of movies, although it would still be funny to see him cover them because even he can admit this is far from the worst nutcracker adaptation out there. We all know which one THAT belongs to.
Even though I didn’t see the movie, was already in high school when this movie came out, I’ve seen so many ads of this Barbie movie on Toonami, the network were pushing this like to compete with the direct to video Disney sequels!
I have watched this EVERY CHRISTMAS for over 20 years. Also, who remembers the Nuttiest Nutcracker? It was the weirdest adaptation but it holds a special place in my heart.
Ok, 2000s CGI aside, this adaptation wasn't that bad. Plus I think that the design of the Nutcracker was actually quite good, cartoony (especially when compared to the other characters, starting by Barbie/Clara) but proportionated enought to look convincing and relatable. I know it doesn't mean much but he's waaaaaaaay better than the Nutcracker from the 2010 movie. You can see him as an attractive guy turned into a wooden toy. Anyway, isn't Kelly supposed to know the Nutcracker story already? I mean, she was practicing for that very ballet. I'm waiting for Barbie in a Christmas Carol now.
I am overjoyed. Lol my one Christmas Tradition is that I watch Barbie Nutcracker every year as well as some verison of the Nurcracker wether it be the actual ballet or a film version. ❤ So glad ur reviewing this please review the other Classic Barbies in the futute!
@@re_animatedabby6791 I watch Barbie in a Christmas Carol around every Christmas time, I didn't realise other people watched Barbie movies as a Christmas tradition too 💖 Merry Christmas!
Honestly, I think it's quite hard to judge the early 2000s animation, especially when it wasn't disney, and even their first fully animated cartoon - The toy story - was released only 5 years before this movie. So I think for its time it looked quite good and colorful. And it's amazing how many children found out about Tchaikovsky and ballet thanks to it. It's certainly not perfect, but it still brings sweet childhood memories every time I see it. You should see "The swan lake" after this one, pleeease
Another Fun Fact: The movie's story is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's tale entitled "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", and the music is adapted/rearranged from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite" by The London Symphony Orchestra.
Thanks for doing this! Never thought these two things I love would converge! Love your ads, by the way! You make the only ones that I always watch all the way through! Also, you may enjoy the Princess and the Pauper one for it’s music and The Magic of Pegasus for it’s snarky dialogue! I’ve always liked this one okay, but not near as much as the other ones. The villain in Princess in the Pauper is voiced by Martin Short, by the way, and at his most over-the-top in the best way! Anyway, Merry Christmas, and thank you for all you’ve done and do!
I actually grew up watching this movie with my little sister. And we actually enjoyed it. And i actually had a good time watching these Barbie animated movies with my little sister. And Ken has always been my favorite Barbie character.
You should review more of the Barbie movies. Some of them are pretty enjoyable and Nostalgic. I would love to see a review of The Princess and the Pauper personally.
Honestly, the Barbie movies are worth watching just for the voice talent behind the villains. Tim Curry, Kelsey Grammar, Martin Short, Anjelica Huston, etc. They give some delightfully evil energy that's sorely missing from animated movies today.

Fun fact the voice actors for Clara and Eric were voice of Sango and Miroku in Inuyasha and those charcater were also a couple
Fun fact: Kelly Sheridan (Barbie) and Kirby Morrow (Eric) would both later go on to play Sango and Miroku in InuYasha. They were also love interests in that anime
Okay, I’m gonna watch the dub now!
5:14 .....I'll never forget Longclaw, Mr. Critic. Never.
Nor me! She deserves more attention in the franchise!
I never will either.
She died a hero…yes she killed Knuckles father but you can argue that was self defence
16:48 Good lord, I had no idea the writers of one of my favorite shows was involved with this.
You would be surprised were people's careers start.
Ok so, I have nowhere to put this but this is the chance for me to get it off my chest regarding the CGI animated Barbie movies:
Despite the insane amount of pink, sparkles, and girly whimsy… despite the horrific designs of some character models namely the infamous Bibble and disgusting Mermaidia sea turtle… Despite the dated advertisement campaigns that put Barbie as the epitome of the modern girl (I’m looking at you terrible Rockin’ Rappin’ Barbie):
I’ve ALWAYS considered the era of Barbie films, starting with Nutcracker and ending around 2011-12, to have an undeniable _elegance._ The way they tell the story, the way the characters talk to eachother is VASTLY different from the 6-second-attention span of more current children’s animated entertainment, especially on UA-cam.
Ugh slapstick typo**
Omg and I can’t forget; a commentator below mentioned it but the music. Often the music and songs could be very well put together (especially in Barbie and the Pauper) and as one commenter said below, certain ballets such as Swan Lake were definitely films that had an appreciation for the music of the source material.
The heck is Bibble?
I remember working at Toys R Us and having to host BARBIE NUTCRACKER premire party on a Saturday in the break room. So much pink.
How pissed off critic looks at the beginning tells you everything you need to know.
16:38 “Well, the moral of the story is shut up.” XD
This movie so PAINFULLY nostalgic for me. My sister had it as a child and we watched it several times. It will eternally have my love!!
6:32
Hmm… an evil bat working for an evil rat with a celebrity voice.
🤔
This is starting to feel like a Disney movie that would be criminally overlooked.
My favorite scene by far is the “empty room” scene. Something about it always gave me chills as a kid, and even now it captivates me.
*Call it again!*
Now do The Swan Princess Christmas as our Christmas Day Present, Critic!
Huh?
You heard the people, WE WANT MORE BARBIE REVIEWS!!!
I watched this so much as a kid. It was one of my favorite Barbie movies, along with dancing princesses and the one with the peacock
The one with the peacock is called Barbie as the Island Princess.
Ty
@@arrow_of_ravenclaw5155 You're welcome.
Nutcracker is certainly in the top 5, but my favorite will always be Barbie Princess Charm School ❤️
Do Barbie Month next year, Critic!
We'll call it...Fe-Barbie-ary!
@ching-jungyang62 March Month Theme mate
"Mar-bie Month"
The best part about the Barbie movies is that they are strangely very good ASMR experiences
I do like and enjoy good ASMR, honestly. It’s soothing.
HEEY!!! That's my print!! The Dipper and Mabel one!! It was SO COOL to have Doug buy it at my artist alley table, and now I get to re-live the excitement all over again!! Thank you!! :D💖
Isn’t this the one with Darth Tim Curry as the Rat King?
It is indeed.
Yes
I will now be anticipating a Princess and the Pauper review 🙃
Well it happened the NC reviewed the Barbie Movie
If you’re talking about the one with Margot Robbie, he hasn’t really gotten to that yet. Maybe sometime in 2025?
@@ChrisNeufeldMusic I think it might be a joke, my friend
Ben Shapiro DESTROYED the Barbie movie for 40 straight minutes.
2:43 well that joke ruined my childhood
The reason she keeps figuring things out quickly (Prince Eric, the castle, the wall) is because she is meant to be shown as clever.
In today's standards, she will defeat the Mouse King all by herself and take over the world.
@@ching-jungyang62 yeah, which is why I like it as it is. I don't think it could be made today. I really think they would go too far with it today.
I love that a previous episode's opening skit was that he was willing to watch even the frraking Care Bears Nutcracker to get some more christmas goodness, but the Barbie version with Tim Curry and actual ballet dancing is somehow where he draws the line 😅
I just noticed that the next Nostalgia Critic episode is on CHRISTMAS!
4:42 Nutcracker! Nutcracker! Nutcracker! 😅😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Best bit in the vid

“I speak in the language of Uppity Curmudgeon Turning His Nose Up At Something Whimsical”
If you ever do another, you HAVE to do the one with Martin Short. It's iconic. Princess and the Pauper.
We need him to do a review of Arthur Christmas damn it 😢
He really likes Arthur Christmas
@@mc-rn8ro agreed!! I hope he does it at some point!!
@andrear4954 ooh that's a good one too!!! Oh yeah ever since I got the movie on dvd as a kid for Christmas! Happy Holidays!!!
Words cannot describe how much I wanted that Sugar Plum Princess dress when I was little😫
Honestly, I think it's quite hard to judge the early 2000s animation, especially when it wasn't disney, and even their first fully animated cartoon - The toy story - was released only 5 years before this movie. So I think for its time it looked quite good and colorful. And it's amazing how many children found out about Tchaikovsky and ballet thanks to it. It's certainly not perfect, but it still brings sweet childhood memories every time I see it. You should see "The swan lake" after this one, pleeease
My younger sister quite enjoyed the Barbie movies growing up and I have a soft spot for Barbie as Rapunzel. But this one, nah, she said it wasn’t it.
Your sister has NO taste (I kid. But it's weirdly probably one of the best adaptations of the Nutcraker tale, in my opinion).
Other than the one with Tom and Jerry of course.
Okay, we need a Barbie month. I have been waiting for this for YEARS.
By reviewing the first movie, Doug is now required by law to review ALL the direct to DVD Barbie movies...All 40+ of them.
