  • Kinbrace has about 400 passengers a year, Altnabreac about 200. I travelled between the two of them to explore what they had to offer!

Clive, Altnabreac station will never be closed to you, you are welcome here anytime you like. It was a pleasure to meet you and hope you come back soon one day. Ian & Elizabeth

Thanks for that. How much more pleasant than 'Altnabraec Cover Up' and the stopping of trains and service since Nov 2023.

There was a time when the method of getting on a train at Altnabreac was to stand on the platform, hold out your hand, watch the train go past at full speed, brake and then reverse into the station to pick you up. I've been on a train when it happened, and I think rail expert Barry Doe once experienced it too - I think he might even have been waiting to board the train.

A fascinating video. I've always been fascinated by the Highland Railway since my father let me take the train from Arrochar to Mallaig as a 15-year-old back in 1980 whilst he worked in Inveraray. It's the remoteness that I find so awesome as they say. Me and my partner used to house hunt in Helmsdale and along the Thurso to Durness road. It's my favorite place on the planet in all honesty. I remember us standing 500 metres apart somewhere between Kildonan and Kinbrace having a conversation with each other more or less at normal talking level. It still tickles me how we were able to do that. I've never experienced that anywhere else. It's such a beautiful part of the world and the sea on the Northern road has something mystical about it.

Wonderful video and quite intriguing given the recent goings on at Altnabreac station and its temporary closure!

Thanks for your comment. I was warned on my way to Altnabreac that the station house occupants could be "awkward" and indeed while I was waiting for the train back they came to speak to me, as they had seen images of me on CCTV walking across their land. However, they were very friendly towards me and offerred me a glass of cold juice (it was very hot that day). They seemed very interested in the historical stories I told them about the station. The Right to Roam legislation specifically excludes "anywhere that provides an individual with privacy", which I think is very hard to define in an area such as Altnabreac.

@@Clivestravelandtrains thank you for replying! That's interesting, I've read other people saying they had similar experiences, not at all unfriendly. Maybe a case of two sides to the story. And what a weird and intriguing story it is!

Great video! Altnabreac feels to me like the hotel California of railway stations! There is now a YT channel called 'The Altnabreac Cover Up' if anyone is interested, hopefully many will come here and view this excellent background look at the situation.

I have been shadow blocked on the Altnabreac Station Cover Up chanel for questioning their facts.
One fact is the platform furniture (fence and gate. Bike rack and direction sign) have mysteriously disappeared in their recent walk around!
Someone asked "why isnt there a fence seperating the house and platform."
    Answered by. "Its fine"
They have mentioned the platform is their front garden.

You and "Karen Purdie" are spreading false information that amounts to harassment. You have accused us of 'Theft' publicly and on a public platform "UA-cam" which is false. I would be very careful making such false accusations!

I think we have to be very careful about questioning 'facts' because it hasn't gone to court yet. It is also possible the land was misrepresented to them by the previous owner.

The snow fences are incomplete. There should be more vertical slats.
Sometimes there is also a \ . ./ structure to funnel wind onto the tracks.
I remember one 197? winter when the coastguard helicopter helped evacuate a snow-bound train. It also carried a large metal-detector (made ad-hoc at Dounreay) down the A9 to find cars buried in the snow.

That would have been 1978, when there were 20+ foot snowdrifts on the Ord of Caithness. I was deciding which university to go to then, and on the way back to NE Scotland from Lancaster that weekend there was quite a lot of snow in the Borders - but nothing like Caithness got.

Thanks for your comment, glad you enjoyed the film. There were a few midges at Kinbrace in the morning, but I didn't have any bother at Altnabreac. The latter station has been closed in the winter as ScotRail haven't been able to gain access to the site to do safety checks and leave salt for the platforms. There is an ongoing dispute with the owners of the station house.
