Cappadocia is one of the coolest places i've ever been to! If you look at what people post on social media you'd think people just go there to take pictures with hot air balloons but they seriously undersell how genuinely amazing it is. I didn't even realise that it was basically one enormous archaeological site until I saw it in a documentary. If you can, you must must must go.

I know people will bash me, but I first heard and seen some details of Cappadocia through that fringe "ancient aliens" programme. I watch them on history channel for this sole purpose. Due to popularity of their TV show, they have granted to visit many interesting sites, so I simply ignore their "explanations" and just filter in only exact facts about the sites. If one train their mind to look at their programme like this, it could be resourcefull too :) Thanks to Dr Miano, I don't need to filter anything here :)
I used to watch them for the excellent footage, and the entertaining stories were like campfire ghost stories, for the most part. But then during quarantine, it suddenly became a bunch of guys sitting around a table talking, a whole bunch of sci-fi CGI, and recycled footage I'd already seen. I tried it again not that long ago, and there wasn't anything new to me... maybe, once you've seen all of their usual goto sites... and all the same old ghost stories... eh. There are plenty of archeological sites around the world, but if they want to try to focus on possible connections to ETs... there aren't many options that aren't highly unlikely at best.
@@GizzyDillespee Yeah, good point, apart from real sites, the rest was good fantasy filler. Granted, hasn't looked at their late seasons. I mean, they spent of all the interesting things in 5 seasons top. The rest is probably recycling, and their regular members mumbling nonsense, as you say.
I watch ghost shows once in a while for the same reason. Laugh at them but enjoy the old sites.
Thats also why i watch channel on youtbe like lightning top and amazing stock. They have really REALLY good video and they DO NOT push the conspiracies they mention the conspiracy once then debunk it but in the format of a top ten video
Enjoying entertainment is not wrong. As long as you are not buying into and perpetuating harmful conspiracy theories (lies) you're golden.
I believe the Melienials call this enjoyment of campy cultural endulgences "ironic" viewing. (They really are just embarrassed).

Creating columns while digging out rock is not only a nice look, but also smart for the safety and durability of the cave building. Miners use pillars too, so the ceiling doesn´t come crashing down. The arches distribute the weight to the pillars, that relieves the pressure from the ceiling. Very interesting video, I love the explanations.

I wonder what happened to the artifacts in Derinkuyu when it was rediscovered in modern times. With such a large population, there must have been an enormous amount of stuff within, like pottery, oil lamps, personal items, food remains, etc...Did these items get documented?
I think like most ancient sites, some artifacts were discovered but most things would have been taken during the hundreds of years the site had been left unused. I mean, we're talking thousands of years here.

Because my financial resources are limited this is not a travel guide. However, it is a very nice annotated tour of a variety of less visited but no less interesting/important historical sites that I am highly unlikely to ever be able to visit. Which is why I watch it.

Really enjoyed this video - I was in Cappadocia in 1991 just after the Gulf War - Drove from Dalyan (Turquoise Coast) to Cappadocia. There were hardly any tourists at that time - plus it was ridiculously cheap too. I remember paying £1.50 a night for a very decent little hotel. Also I remember just walking into Derinkuyu - absolutely no queue - and only a handful of other visitors.
PS: you always seem to travel with very attractive female companions......fellow academics, friends or more than friends..? : - )

Thank you for this, David, I've been hoping for some decent footage of the Derinkuyu complex, and any of the connected locations!
Given that you stated that one person could carve out roughly 1m2 of material daily, it beggars belief to restrict any potential timeline for the creation or habitation of the underground complexes.
Yes, I expect that at least, a very small percentage of the square footage could have been excavated in deep prehistory, and with each generational phase, further and deeper excavations were made.
I feel you let yourself down by not properly educating people to the why's and wherefores that determine what we think we currently know, which is limited by the access allowed to the numerous and sprawling locations which have been discovered and made known but have not (from what I've been able to discern) been reported in academic journals, nor any research publicised by any academic institution.
If you know of any, please let us know.
Otherwise, everything we know (pre verifiable, limited locations) is pure speculation unless discoveries can be made that can inform to a site's inhabited chronological timespan.
I'm not among the Atlantean group, I just think that if we can't date rock, then we can't say for certain who the earliest inhabitants were, nor when they lived, and our limiting of their potential capabilities is demeaning to them, not the people making the claims.

In response to your advertisement for the globe and your comment about annoying flat earthers I say this: The earth has a bigger diameter when measured at the equator than it does when measured at the poles. I would assume that is caused by centrifugal force but I'm not a physicist or a geologist so take that statement with a grain of salt. Either way, that would make the earth kind of flat... on the poles. 😮 I love your videos Dr. Miano. Keep 'em coming!

In the first 10 min there’s a church with old religious paintings. Does anyone know the age of the paintings of Jesus? Only reason I ask.. Jordan Maxwell had said long ago, there were 16 religions that came before Christianity that all had a savior child born of a virgin birth, a cross, and was sacrificed. As well as other similarities.
