I used to be a soprano and I'm really good but over quarantine I didn't sing everyday and my voice got really breathy and I can't high notes I used to be able I'm starting to get back into routine and you videos have helped me!
DUDE, this is the best vocal video ever. You explain the why of things! I feel like other coaches just say, sing 'nay nay nay, guh, guh, guh' and you'll improve but they never explain the mechanism or how it is that the exercises will work - because no-one actually wants their voice to actually sound like 'nay, nay, guh, guh'! Thank you for the explanation part of things. I'm exciting to learn how to belt safely and properly at long last!
Wonderful, thank you! I'm struggling so much with postnasal drip (I think from seasonal allergies) and I really need to keep pressure OUT of my throat. So this is great.
Awesome excersices! I would love to see a video from you on how to go about releasing that "throat strain" feeling. Sometimes while practicing a healthy belt, that strain will still come into play. Even if you try to let it go as soon as you notice it, that tightness stays around even if you don't do any more singing after that. Thoughts?
When I should start singing a song after I watched all of your videos? You actually teached me how to sing a high notes and also to removed a strains, found my belt and also to love my voice too. 💓
These exercises are my go-to every time before Sunday worship. I notice a huge difference in being able to belt and reach all the notes. The gogogogoooo was challenging in the beginning, but I got them down without straining and they help so much!
Roger Love recommends these same exercises, so it’s nice to know some exercises are universal among singing coaches. But you explain things in more detail Madeleine in my view.
This video is the best warmup for belting I’ve ever come across. I’ve always struggled with having a soft whispery voice but I watched this once and BOOM it was there so effortlessly. Keeping this for future reference. Thank you!
have u ever struggled with a massive strain and an overuse of the chest voice while trying to belt? i can’t do the second exercise without feeling that strain that she mentioned and idk how to get rid of it😅
It's hard to give good advice when I can't see or hear what's going on, but strain is definitely a difficult obstacle to overcome. I think experimenting while singing helps because then you can feel it out and you'll be able to feel where the strain goes away. Hopefully that made sense lol my brain is fried. @@oneeye9801
Madeline, thank you so much for your coaching and explanations! I’m grateful for you!!! You’re funny and delightful, too! We have to lose a bit of our pride to do these silly exercises for serious voice! I Love you! 😊 Thank you!!!❤❤❤
That was fantastic! Thank you. You're a great teacher and I love the look of your studio - so professional and cool :). Great tips for belting, to go lighter in the beginning. Very helpful for me and not too serious at the same time ;-)
Omg this really helps me to feel less stressed and also be less stressed when singing. It's so fun to do as well and it helped me to reach higher notes in chest voice more effortlessly!✨🔥
Thanks so much, Madeline. I wanted a good belting warm-up to help me prepare for a ukulele performance. I've always wanted tools for a no-fail belt. Wish me luck on my performance in March at the Gaithersburg UkeFest.
Wonderful exercises very helpful! Reminded me of “yeast “ only in “G”. Madeline will you do a video on soft singing (gentle chord) I tend to sing full on and some singers style is breathy in quality. Thank you 😊
Thank you so much for the awesome tips and advice I never learned about any of this but now that I have that had taught me I appreciate you helping me along the way
You are great It would be great if you could focus on different types of voices Like,I have a light voice as compared to many guys so how should I proceed with it im 17 so I just wish it gets a bit mature 🙁😅
Hmm I commented earlier and it’s not appearing - but OMG that counterweight analogy was such a lightbulb moment for me! Been missing something in my belt practise and couldn’t figure it out but think I have with this video. Also the sugar/salt thing is total genius.
literally im belting last midnight from into the woods and I dont usually belt but for her it feels the best (in my personal opinion) show day in 1 month and a few weeks!!!
this was extremely helpful to me! i took voice for years as a young woman but haven't in a long time, and am auditioning recently for belting roles. i am trying to keep those higher notes relaxed but have noticed an almost shouting quality in my voice (my range has also decreased in my old age ;) these exercises really helped me keep those higher notes more relaxed in my throat. i could definitely feel it. i may contact you for some help on a specific song for a role. thank you!
Hi Madeline! I’ve been watching your channel lately and it has helped me immensely. I was wondering if you could do a video on sustained high notes at the end of a song. I am a self trained Leggero tenor and even though the octave C3-C4 is the best part of my range, I still can’t stand to sing the notes Bb3-C4 at the very end of an aria or art song because no matter how good the voice sounds and feels, I know I’m taking a chance and start to feel sick right before the end. I’m okay with the phrases that require me to scoop up, hold for a second and then drop down but it’s NOTHING like the sustained ones at the end.
Madeleine I feel like you’re probably the only woman who can explain to me here! So today I was having trouble with the bridge of Kelly Clarkson Since U Been Gone - ‘you had your chance you blew it, outta sight, out of mind’. In my lesson I was over blowing, stuck in mix etc and it was just so screechy and bright (sidenote, isn’t mix meant to be helpful for that sort of singing?). ANYWAY my question - I got home and sang the phrase on a ‘gug’ and bingo, I could belt those notes no problem. Added in the words, still good. It felt EASY and COMFORTABLE 😮😮 So I know the gug helps maintain a lower larynx, right? But what is actually HAPPENING in the vocal tract there, compared with my straining in my lesson? I’m just somehow managing to access a different shape of cavity? Is that a a tipping forward or an adduction or something? I feel like I need to be able to understand all this in order to be legit. (I’ve just started as a singing teacher and there’s so much still to learn!)
Hi Madeleine. Any tips on onset? I tend to have a glottal onset I'm trying to get rid of (to reduce strain) or at least tame. Thanks for all of your other great content. Honestly, I have a hard time keeping up with all these lessons. If you haven't done it yet (I haven't seen it) it might also be helpful to have you explain what a daily practice program would look like. Also, how do you go about learning a song? But the main thing for me right now is the onset thing. THX again.
Meh. I learned to get used to looking/sounding silly to other people a long time ago. 😉 Between acting/oral interpretation, singing, and performing - people think I’m weird, and that’s just find.
Thank you Madaleine for these tutorials, they are incredibly helpful. One thing I'd like to know is once I have practiced each lesson, I'm wondering what song would be best to impliment this technique into? Example if it's this lesson on Warming up for a belt, could you recommend a belting song that I could sing along to after completing the lesson to implement the proper voice placement please? Or if it's a lesson on breathing could you recommend a song that works on our understanding of breathing to implement the lesson just learned please? Thank you kindly
This video was awesome! I'm a trained classical soprano and generally transition quite low. Auditioning for a belt role, and was able to bring my belt up to a solid Db! Now to figure out how to sustain them!?
I can’t nay as smooth as you did. My voice kept breaking in the transition to higher notes even I tried very hard to use the mix voice / pharyngeal section
thank you so much for your videos Madeleine! How long before singing do you have to do the warmup? I need to chant at Mass sometimes, so I can't be practicing right before the time I need to go up and do it, as it may be 15 to 20 minutes into the service. Is it still effective to do the warmup and not be belting until half an hour or so after?
Hi beautiful friend! Thank you so much, loving all of your videos and content! Always learning soooo much :) If you are actually still taking suggestions, I would love to know what the Top two most important things to remember or stay aware of when performing? I lead a kirtan and know how much my voice can relax and deepen the connection with, so on my journey there, are they any tips you have for "beginner performers" like myself? So much love and gratitude! Chris
For me I always push my head out which used to strain my throat a lot try tugging your chin down/ towards your neck while singing.... Ok this worked for me but I'm not sure if this will work for you too and you can also see some videos bout singing through diaphragm that may help tooo
Excellent merci beaucoup 🙏 . Sometimes my muscles neck are tense as if I am pulling an elephant. Any video of yours to correct this behavior. Thank you.
Wow...I feel it. What I mean I know what you just said seems to be key but I didn't understand. The (1) Singing in the nose/nasal - wasn't sure how and when (2) you talked about resistance - again wasn't sure how.
Hey, so one of my friends who is a professional opera singer once told me that making "g" sounds while singing and warming up can actually strain your voice and that it is better to make sort of a "ck" sound because it can usually pass depending on the words. I wanted to know if this is true because i've seen a lot of people use it in their routines.
Do you always do these so fast? Should I be taking smaller breaths, or not breathing between? I have so much extra air, and not a lot of time to let it out and get more.
2:12 - Beginning of first exercise.
5:32 - Beginning of second exercise.
Second do we use a nose or not?
I'm inside my van outside of a karaoke bar.. being the weirdo warming up because I won't be able to sing without doing this warm-up 😂
That is totally me
Time frames for practice:
02:30 - Release: 4-up Ney's, 4 stacatto Ney's, 4-down Ney's
06:02 - Resistance: 4-up Goo's, 4 stacatto Goo's, 4-down Goo's
So helpful!!! THANK YOU
