- Whoah, where do I begin?
This was honestly a dream chase and one of the best chases I’ve ever been on in my 10-year career chasing in the midwest. It was amazing to witness this slow-moving photogenic supercell that produced a drill bit photogenic tornado that was on the ground for over 40+ minutes! It just doesn’t get any better than that!
Unfortunately, there is a dark side to nature’s beauty. It’s hard being in a hobby where you are sometimes the active watcher in other people’s dismay. It’s a tension that not only myself but I know a lot of other storm chasers have wrestled with over the years. No, we do not want to see property or lives being destroyed, yet we are mesmerized by the power weather can do. All of that to say, I love weather but wrestle with its destructive nature. And within that wrestling, learning to just trust God with what's going.
I hope you enjoy the video though - as you can tell from the video and the description, it was a very bitter-sweet experience for me but is one that I will never forget.
GoFundMe Update: The GoFundMe link has been removed - thank you for all that supported the families and those that were affected!
Details of the Tornado:
The National Weather Service has officially rated the tornado as an EF4 with winds up to 170mph. It was on the ground for 40+ minutes and tracked 11 miles near the towns of Dalton and Ashby, MN.
Disclaimers:
- There were several other people in front of me that checked on the homes that had damage before I got there.
- Because I know someones going to say something about it - No, I didn’t stop completely at that stop sign, yes I definitely looked all the ways before crossing.

I understand the destruction and loss of life tornadoes cause. That being said thos has to be one of the most cinematic i have ever seen filmed.
"Cinematic," is spot on. It didn't even look real, the contrast of colors was so brilliant. It almost looked like the CGI from Twister. lol
mvpfocus I don’t know why the debris cloud looks so fake to me and confuses me so much, considering I know damn well that’s how tornadoes look and behave. There’s just something so bizarrely clean about it?
@@tomemeornottomeme1864 I know. I thought the thumbnail was click bait at first. Turns out nope.
Check out Mike Olbinski if you want cinematic video.
if you look of hanes franks he showed a ef5 and got close
Probably the clearest tornado video I have ever seen. Amazing.
do you watch Pecos Hank because his videos are beautiful too
I know right
That’s what I was thinking, absolutely stunning, yet so potentially deadly :/
What i like here too: He isn't screaming like some more popular hunters. Just filming and "enjoying" the view.
This and Katie W tornadoes are so damn photogenic.
That weird mix of having a healthy love for tornados and also being terrified of them when you hear your city siren go off.
That's just like praying to the god that sent the tornado to protect people even though god sent the tornado to ruin people's lives and kill them.
How does that make sense?
Seems as though there is a gap in cognitive reasoning.

I thought the same thing. 😂
"Lord, protect these people."

he actually prayed for people who were inside his car but kept silent all the time

Exactly he's tempting god
Well, there's something you don't see everyday, an EF4 tornado on the ground and the sun bright as could be.
Yeah I was super confused. I've never seen that
Thought that was common
In July no less
Because of where the tornado is in relation to the storm it’s not that uncommon. Especially when the storm is isolated like this one was.
Truly the most 2020 of tornadoes.
I’ve been watching storm chasing videos for about 15 years now and this has to be the best filming of a storm I’ve ever seen. Definitely subbing
Damn you got me thinking as to how long I'd been hooked on tornado videos and just looked up the McConnell AFB tornado and just realized it's 30 years of being hooked on tornado/storm chasing videos.
I’ve been watching storm season for like about 16 years i think

When he said WOW I said it at the exact same time. Amazing filming. I lived through a tornado when I was a teen. We knew one was coming but we were looking for it and it was on the ground. We couldn't see it at all. Talk about calm before the storm! It was dead silent and not a leaf was moving. All of a sudden we saw leaves lifting straight up. It took many homes in our area including the one two houses down from us. Nobody died. That was a miracle. It did sound exactly like a train.
"I gotta go Julia we got cows"
Love that movie
Twister!
Best. Movie. EVER!
The fact that this deadly tornado is happening in full sunlight is wild.
And it being visible and not rain-wrapedis very interesting
And the birds are singing!
@@mycharmedunicorn8715 flowers are blooming
The mesocyclone always usually sits on the very tail end of the storm. Right after it is sunlight!
Most of them do since the funnel itself is usually on the SW end of a storm cell. If you dont have multiple storm cells around you will have sunlight directly behind the tornado
unlike some other young men, you don't yell and scream. Kudos for that, and your excellent photography. I subbed.
correction: they are not 'young men', in fact 'boys' *
*one exception is Mr. Jeff Piotrowski who is definitely not a 'boy', but the real deal and clearly has a personality-type that is excitable - regardless, he is a master storm-chaser who captures amazing video, has sounded the warning to communities before anybody else and lent his personal aid to survivors in the immediate aftermath of several of this country's most devastating violent tornadoes, including Joplin 2011..

The footage showing the churning at the base of the tornado about half way through the video is incredible. The destructive power of nature.
You’re photography is amazing and I was thankful for your thoughtful response in praying for the people who were in the path of this storm. From the beauty of dying fall leaves to the majesty of tornadic supercells, our world is filled with these seeming contradictions…but they are real.
That's was beautifully and cleverly worded.
7:18 I think this might be the most TEXTBOOK structure I've ever seen of a storm that produced this violent of a tornado. Usually these storms are heavily rainwrapped
This is one of the best videos of a tornado life ever! This is amazing!
Yesiree!
The Life and Death of a tornado.
I have watched A LOT of tornado clips on you-tube and this is simply by far the best one iv'e ever seen and probably will ever see. To see it from start to finish in such clarity and seeing the base of it so close and clear is simply amazing!
This is such an amazing supercell...such a contrast of sky and how it literally sits at the rear of the storm with almost no flanking line.
I also note the lack of thunder and lightning! 🤔
The rotation on that thing is amazing. The entire cloud is rotating with it!
Supercell, 1/2 of super cells form tornados. Scientists are still trying to figure out why only 50% do.
@Ben the Player why does it do that? This life footage is the first I've seen this close.. so what charges the supercell?
May sound crazy but seeing something like this in person would be amazing
Sound crazy, WHY.?
Of course it would be freaking amazing.
Sound crazy,, why.?
JAY Q As long as you’re not in it!
One of my bucketlist items is to storm chasing... I wonder if there are people who would take normies along for money.
Not crazy to me. They have storm chasing tours. Been wanting to try it myself
Master Shake i remember seeing some video about a company who does tours like that in the midwest for like $5k a day
I watch a lot of tornado chasing videos and I just want to say how much I appreciate your genuine concern for people. Thank you for praying for them. This video is amazing and heartbreaking all in one.
That was some of the best tornado footage I’ve seen! Loved the wide shots showing the storm structure, the time lapses, plus the close ups of the violent rotation. Well done.
I love how he keeps saying "Lord please protect these people" then gets even closer to a tornado
Mason Peterson I think the guy’s on “Hold.”
He is interested in getting footage of this weather. He hopes this tornado doesn’t hurt anyone. But he will be using this footage for others to study. It is also a thrill and a hobby for him too. These things aren’t mutually exclusive.
"Lord, please help me film the destruction of these homes and farms so I can upload it to UA-cam, In Jeezus name, amen."
If the Lord wanted to protect the people, surely He would not have created the tornado in the first place.
This is God's will. For if it was not how would it it exist.
This is by far the best tornado sight i have seen in my life. You almost can feel the power of this storm. Nature never stops to surprise me.
2:51 "wow wow wow, thank you je- Lord please protect these people" classic
😂 I was wondering if anyone else caught that
“Wow wow wow...🤩THANK YOU JESU....😳...🤭Lord protect these people.”
Lolol he went from total excitement, to “I shouldn’t say that”mid sentence 😅
I use to hear them quite often when I lived on Missouri. I kind became a bit desensitized to them. But seeing one I'm person is....beautiful. And terrifying
And if it killed 25 people, would you still thank Jesus? After all, their deaths would have been all part of "God's Great Plan," correct?
@@lightcaesar You’d thank jesus for you not dying or more people not dying. It’s just a coping mechanism it ain’t that deep
@@HaiRune No, I wouldn't. It's based on a false assumption. And if I DIED, I couldn't give testimony WHY it's a foolish assumption...because I'd be DEAD! Do yourself a favor- live in the REAL world. You'll be able to "cope" so much better!
@@lightcaesar Lmao what are you talking about??? Literally people have multiple ways for coping about stuff in the real world. Religion is one of them and it isn’t the only way to do it. Regardless of whether you personally believe in the religion in question, it isn’t right to go “It’s fake so stop talking about it” when someone is using it for personal happiness and it affects you in no way. Like I get you’re doing one of those edgy “I hate religion so I’m gonna aggressively state my viewpoint as fact” but if what they’re doing doesn’t affect you then just leave it alone. Save it for the people who actually try to force their beliefs on you
tornadoes are horrifying as a general rule, but this is legit one of the best videos i have ever seen. to actually be able to see what is happening at the very base of the tornado is incredible.
i am thankful that this tornado happened in a relatively rural area so there was not as much destruction or loss of life, and the rural environment was conducive for amazing footage. thank you for posting this!
I hope lots of people survived
eeèeeeeeeeeeeeee4eeèeeeéee4eeeeeeeeè
My thoughts exactly. Amazing footage.
This tornado leveled one of my friends' family's farmsteads... Been in their family for generations and now it's gone. Luckily for them there was no loss of life. This tornado was a killer. Amazing video
Thanks for reminding us all that a destroyed building or home is more than a bunch of lumber & nails. I am truly fascinated by the complexity & power of 'mother nature', but at the same time, I am horrified & saddened when I see that someone's lifetime of memories & hard work has been obliterated in seconds by 'mother nature'. I think it's important to understand that storm chasers would much rather see highly photogenic tornadoes like this one, but that they also stay completely away from homes, businesses, and other occupied buildings. Unfortunately nobody can do anything to control 'mother nature', just warn people when they're likely in danger (which storm chasers usually do).
It is not real
@@imtiyazahmadbhatbhat3088 ... what's not real?
Crazy - thanks for sharing. Any chase I go on where a tornado causes any damage is always a bitter-sweet one. Check out my discription to read my personal wrestling in this area.
The man killed in this tornado was from Battle Lake, MN. He was married with four kids. The destruction at 8:25 shows the remains of the shop was working in.
Can we just appreciate how many good shots this man got?
This is the first time I’ve seen clear REAL clear footage of an E4 tornado.
Brother you did good. You. Got so close that Inwas praying for you not to get engulfed into that beautiful monster.
That was a beautiful job and tornado.
Absolutely stunning.
This is one of the best chases i've ever seen. Amazing work. Wow.
That was insane. I have never seen a tornado with so much clarity. Bless all affected but well done guys on an amazing chase.
The way the cloud vanishes at the end is beautiful.
That was incredible. Thanks for capturing and sharing- quietly so I could watch
Brought tears to my eyes when he started praying 4 everyone’s safety in the path of this thing. It’s nice to know there’s still decent ppl on earth
My first thought when I heard him praying took me back to the old George Carlin routine, "This man might as well be praying to Joe Pesci, he's get the same result either way."
Yea praying is fine but a broken record is just uncalled for. Keep it in your head after a few rounds wow.
Praying for safety only AFTEF thanking Jesus for creating a tornado for him to see. It’s just a tad disingenuous!

I'm glad you all made it through OK. I think you're going to be telling this story to your grandchildren.
I've been through a bunch of hurricanes in my 55 years but this one was just monsterous. Me and my parents rode it out because we thought it was going to be a low end cat 4. They just upgraded it to Cat 5. I'm happy we made it out alive and with a house intact, more or less. Many weren't so blessed.
Thank you for recording your experience. I hope you have a long career in meteorology
Your cinematography is spot-on in this video. Beautiful work. I used to live in Wyoming and see tornadoes all the time and they are terrifying yet beautiful in the same moment
Wow. At 7:13 you can literally see the entire supercell and the "hook" tornado funnel off the back exactly as you would see it on a radar image. Absolutely amazing video.
Dude is that a real life hook echo? Seriously? Not just a radar signature but a real thing? Dang
I was impressed by that footage too. You don't see that every day.
I'm surprised he drove that far and didn't pass a McDonalds
McDickald's are everywhere...
Or a dollar general. Especially that far into the country.
McDonald’s has enough sense not to locate someplace where a cloud dick ruins everything.
Lmao it's Minnesota what do you expect
You need to get out in the country more.
What made it feel so much more real was when you said “lord please protect all these people” and it really truly hit my heart. As we watch this incredible chase, which thank you for putting your life on the line to capture this scary beauty; homes, businesses, the regular spots are being destroyed. Life will not be the same for those people in its path. My heart hopes and prays those lives are protected❤️
I was in a tornado watch today, I got kind of scared when the clouds started getting dark. They were moving fast, so me as someone who studies about tornadoes I Knie that the tornado was in our area at the moment, so I got scared and told my grandma and I asked her “do you think the tornado will come?” She said “I don’t know..” that just made me even more worried so I was about to actually get in my closet. I didn’t go in but I was still scared! I kept telling my best friend that “OMG IM SO SCARED!! I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!! :CCC” and we were both worried. Like an hour later it got lighter outside, I was so relieved that it passed.
IF YOURE IN A TORNADO WATCH OR WARNING GET IN A CLOSET OR BATHROOM OR THE LOWEST FLOOR IN A STURY BUILDING!!!
Stunning photos! It’s amazing some of the prettiest most well formed storms and not many chasers around!

True, then curl up and disappear too..
They show up and then they’re outa there. The Jonesboro tornado in 2020 is still my favorite cause of that. It formed instantly with none of that funnel cloud slowly extending down junk and zipped across town and disappeared.

“Lord Please Protect These People!” While chasing the tornado! You are very brave!😱
This is the best up close tornado video I have ever seen! How do you stay so confident being so close to that tornado? It is so unpredictable!
No, tornado's move in one direction, from the sw to the ne. If you are on the other side looking back at it, that's the dangerous part. Following one or staying behind it isn't. They can take a "right turn" which you see in this video. However he is behind it, so it appears as a left turn. When they take a right turn, those in the path or on the otherside watching it approach are the ones in danger. You always want to be behind the tornado. Coming from someone whose lived in tornado allly 53 yrs. Also they can stop and just churn and churn. That's what happend on I think May 8th famous tornado. It sat outside the hospital in Joplin Mo. LIke and angry beast. However if it hand't of stopped and just sat there, many more would have been killed. It gave the hospital time to move the patients. Tonadoes are truly the "finger of GOD".
@@vondahartsock-oneil3343 Wow! Thank you for the reply, I am uneducated in this area so thank you so much for that! It is good to know like you said to track the direction so you know where it is going and can avoid it and take precautions to do so!
@@vondahartsock-oneil3343 This is not even close to true lmao, tornadoes can literally do a 180 and have in the past. Storm occlusion is real, and you can't count on a tornado to always head NE. Don't spread misinformation that can get people killed bro.
@@finderskeepers6684 It's not always true, don't listen to that person. Tornadoes do not always move one particular direction and can move very erratically. You can't predict their movement.
