This Sikh Motorcycle Club Rides for Unity

- After a gunman killed six worshippers at a Sikh temple in 2012, Gurinder Singh Basra knew he needed to do something to fight deadly stereotypes about his faith. Sikhs, who believe in equality for all and service to others, increasingly had become the targets of hate crimes after September 11, 2001. So Gurinder started the Sikh Riders of America, a motorcycle club dedicated to fostering dialogue and visibility, while also fundraising for charities. Today, the club has about 200 members-including Gurinder’s young son Afftab, who is inspired to follow his father’s path of generosity and compassion.
A huge thanks to our guest editor this week, Portland Trail Blazer CJ McCollum. All week, he handpicked stories celebrating mentors inspiring the next generation.

Sikhs are pretty great folks. It's a shame that they've been subject to so much unkindness in the US.

The Turbanator 2: Sikh and Destroy
For the record: in my xp, Sikh's are great, peaceful people, and I'm glad they're doing something positive (:
the name turbanator sounds like an indian sikh soldier's war mech
Man, Sikhism is probably one of the coolest and chill religions like why would you hate on them?
Plus it's totally unrelated to 9/11
Because they look different.
@@archivehans This, unfortunately.
I know right. My neighbors were sikh and they always treated everyone with respect. Hell they even invited me over alot of times before they moved.
Sadly, people misinterpret Sikhs as Muslims and fear danger to them. However Islam and Sikhism are completely different religions and Islam is peaceful and beautiful itself. The issue is that the small minorities in a religion who are bad cause attention and media to people that start to stereotype the rest of the good people. This is the issue with ISIS and terrorism itself.

I think the main reason Sikhs aren't as accepted is because people mistake them for Muslims. I kinda wish that more people knew more about Sikhism; personally I know very little, except that they're not Muslims.
no shit
sladikk So you're saying it's okay to not accept them if they were Muslim and you wouldn't care to know more about them if this was the case?? That's fucked up. Sikhism derived from Sufism anyway and two of their teachers in their holy book are Muslim.
@@EliteXtasy Don't you put words in my mouth...I'm saying that most people associate south/central Asians wearing turbans with Muslims, which is often associated with radical Islam in the West.
@@sladikk you're exactly right. It's the total definition of "case in point" when Sikh people (or any brown person for that matter) are assumed as Muslim because it perfectly highlights the ignorance involved.
@@EliteXtasy The same Muslims went to war with Sikhs slaughtered them . Sikhism was not derived from Sufism ofcourse it had influences from many religions at the time but it is not derived from it . Do you want me to cite how gruesomly Sikh gurus were executed by Muslims? And FYI you cannot put all muslims in to Sufism it is nothing like Wahabism which is totally extreme kind
I appreciate your approach of sharing your culture and the Sikhs I know are not only peaceful and share peace they also know more about America’s history politics and culture than 98% of people that consider themselves true Americans. The Sikhs I know are great Americans. Btw I’m a white middle age conservative male from the south. So don’t believe every stereotype
Thank you sir. Peace be upon you and your family.
Same here southern and conservative and I've corrected some of my ignorant coworkers when they've talked bad about "the guys in turbans" i started doing research after the temple attack because I didn't know what Sikhs were I was impressed by what I saw they are hard working kind charitable people that love their familes that treat women as equals they have a noble history as warriors I tell people that they have fought radical Islam for centuries they serve in our military and that part of their faith is defending the oppressed. I love how they chose to reach out to others rather than using the media to make people feal guilty for their ignorance they find something that they can have in common with others to start a conversation and educate people.
Great message. Great people. Thanks for this. Keep the shiny side up...
Growing up in northern California I've known a lot of Sikh. Huge population there. And they are wonderful, kind, giving, loyal, and brave people. The main tenant of their faith is to protect and provide for the innocent. All Sikh men are almost like knights. Of they see an innocent getting attacked by 10 thugs.. They will jump in and give their life tondwfend that person.
Had no idea there was such a thing as a Sikh motorcycle club. Last night coming home from the grocery store I pulled up next to a bunch of Harley's, and happened to notice a bunch of beards, and a bunch of Turban's. I'm thinking to myself... "well, that's something you don't see every day" Had to look it up, and here I am!!! Pretty awesome!!
Sikh's are just so awesome. Every time I hear about them it is due to them being upstanding, awesome people
I want to hug this man
Skihs are a warrior family love from India
Sikhs are not warriors instead Jat Sikhs and jats are. It's about caste not religion. There are also lower castes in Sikhs. Warriors were only upper caste Sikhs which were and still are Jats.

I see these comments how religions need to modernize and assimilate into western culture.
Sikhs had founded a similar ideology to western culture BEFORE the west. For us, America isn’t assimilation, it’s home.
Fine example of integration . God bless sikhs 🙏
After 9/11 for some reason some Indians get so much hate it’s disturbing (other religions as well) I understand that the attackers were Muslims but not all are bad many are good .
Too many Americans don’t know their history. For such a young nation of a couple hundred years, our political “interests” and forward reach around the globe demands that we do a better job of learning history. Sikhs were our allies during the Burma Campaign of WWII; just like the Hmong People were to us in Vietnam.

They always have helmets

Sikhs are the signature of one of the hundred amazing things (atleast a dozen) to come out of my motherland India.
Amazing people!
Sikhs are the sikhers of the light! (Pun intended)
I marvel at how the Sikhs have historically bore the brunt of Islamic extremism. From the days of Mughal rule in India, when their great gurus laid down their lives for dharma, till now. Not to mention their gallantry in independence movement of India.
Sikhs must also try to eliminate the discrimination between themselves. the system of caste is still in deep roots although it was formed to eradicate it. the discrimination on basis of looks is similar on basis of caste.
I don't care about your religion.
I don't care about your race.

In Vic. It is allowed to wear turban while driving Scooty or Bike
0:04 when he says “after 9-11” this made me having 9-11 flashbacks
What a great initiative to help spread Guru Nanak’s message of ONENESS!!
Hey sikh rider of america you need some custom ring or pin for your logo message me
Sikism is a good riligion originated in India...
I wish there was more videos of them😀
First off love their attitude, and the way they are trying to show they are modern and integrated with the great American dream. AWESOME
But there is actually some issue with these riding groups in Canada due to a law change. They have claimed and won the right to not wear helmets due to it interfering with the turban. So they made an exemption for them to ride without a helmet. Now I am not saying they shouldn't be allowed to ride, but it does seem unfair to other riders who don't wear a helmet to get ticketed because they are from the wrong religion or following. More a case of making it the law for all instead of a select group, people I know in the Indian and Sikh community have commented in the same fashion. they are happy but some find the outcome unfair to others.
There is also a second question we have in to ask. in the event of an accident let us say at fault or both at fault for example, if the rider on the bike dies due to not wearing a helmet should that person be charged with manslaughter.
I live in Canada too , and to me it seems like the turban wearing riders are usually more sensible than these high testosterone speed bike riders. My guess is they see it as a show of faith and that they don't want to disrespect their faith by driving like idiots
@@abc9570I can agree with you on that one, I know those superbike riders you are talking about. more a case of is it fair to have laws that usually can lead to massive fines and even confiscation of your vehicle can be tweaked to have a single group of people except.
a case of everyone should be treated equally in the eye of the law.
As an American-Indian I like what they are doing, but why aren't they wearing helmets? Safety is most important on a motorcycle.
Watch the video again... a lot of them are wearing helmets. Some states don't have helmet laws
Damn, I love this channel.
Nice to see these people represent their faith.

I would just like to say that I think this channel always does a great job in producing its videos, and I love the content, but Sikh is pronounced the same way as "sick" not "seek". I was really disappointed in the fact that they got this wrong.
I don't care to share here what I think about religious people (or any group for that matter) who feel the need to make a big show of it all.
I will say that I have never let a living soul on my motorcycle without the proper gear. A leather vest, blue jeans, and a hanky wrapped on your noggin is no way to prepare yourself for the road.
These folks are in Cali to boot. I don't think your organization needs any more affiliation with the word "suicide."
Our society has pit into place LAWS that require many, many airbags be placed in every new car, yet the majority of these jokers ride around with no head, neck, or spine protection to speak of.
Might as well let out a war cry when you get to the end of the driveway.
