I recently adopted a 15 year old male cat that was extremely malnourished and skeletal (he weighed only 4 pounds, when he should be about 12-15 pounds due to his size.) He had a severe leg injury that fully healed crooked and it still causes him pain to walk but cannot be fixed due to it not being surgically repaired immediately after the injury. The owners would leave him outside even in 100 degree weather with no food or water and he was near death when a little girl picked his lifeless body up and dropped him off on my porch, knowing I take in and help stray animals. I took him the following morning to the vet and at first was thrilled when I found out he was microchipped, thinking he was lost for a long period of time due to his condition and they'd be happy to find him. Sadly, his owners picked him up from the vet without treating him, (despite my telling the vet I would gladly pay for any care he needed if the owners needed help.) They promisied to get him care later and explained he "had a hard life" and that's why he was "naturally" skinny. The vet couldn't take him despite his lack of care and he left with them, with the vet's office being heartbroken they couldn't help him. The very next day, while driving, we saw him laying on the side of the road, dehydrated so badly he couldn't even meow or look at us straight. He was unable to walk and his body shook constantly from going into shock. I spent the next few days helping him to recover and fed him a small amount every 2 hours to slowly acclimate him to food again. While the vet cannot treat him due to me not being his owner, I have been able to get him any medication he needs in the name of my other two strays that I've adopted. I'm thankful that they know I'm helping him and truly care about him, where his old owners just wanted him to crawl off and die. 😢 (There's more to them not caring for their animals properly but that's a whole other story. It's really a horrific situation, which is why the vet is secretly happy I took him in, knowing he's finally getting treated AND LOVED, in his final days.) In our state, animals are just "property" and there are no laws against animal cruelty which is just crazy to me! It took me about a month to realize he is deaf and that killed me because a deaf cat is soooooo vulnerable living outdoors. It explained why he has so many scars and injuries. He has had a verrrrrrrrrry hard life looking at his x-rays. He always slept huddled over trying to protect himself and never really relaxed, despite having his own large kennel & warm bed to recover in and was able to have our large king size bed to lay in during the day, away from any other pets. After 2 months (where he gained 6 more pounds!), we let him start to slowly interact with our 2 cats we took in last year. The poor boy can't interact properly because he doesn't understand their cues because he can't hear them. (Fun fact, dogs are capable of making about 12 sounds, whereas cats make up to 120 different sounds communicating with one another and us!) They try to "talk" to him and he'll just meow one loud meow that scares them. He looks devastated when they run away from him. He's slowly learning but I just have so much empathy for what his life was for 15 years and how lonely and scary life must have been for him. The good thing is, he lives like a king now and has a forever home with us. He can eat whenever he wants, play, cuddle and sleep in a warm safe environment. His old owners have never attempted to contact us or the vet looking for him, so he's safe and sound in our care. I absolutely adore him and I love seeing him relax and become stronger again day by day. I'm so happy he found his way into our home, instead of passing away on the roadside. 💔 If you made it this far, thanks for letting me share my story of our sweet deaf boy. ❤️🐈⬛🐱❤️
I just realized today my kitty is deaf. Like it's mentioned, because I have another 3 cats I wasn't able to notice for a long time. he's an indoor cat that was originally going to be given up for adoption but now I'm glad he stayed. I noticed he slept a lot and I had to wake him up to get him to eat all the time. he never came when I grabbed the food bag like the other cats (startled everytime), I just thought he was a heavy sleeper, his meowing is SO LOUD it made me wonder if he really doubted that I was going to feed him or smth. He's completely white with green eyes and his mom is white with blue eyes. I'm sad I hadn't noticed because he probably needed more visual cues instead of me yelling his name expecting him to look at me... I got disappointed thinking I didn't help him when he's been surrounded by silence. But he has adapted himself all t his time, so it's my turn to see what I can do for him. Thank you so much for this video, it helped ❤
Having a radio play is a delight for a deaf cat, as long as she can cuddle in up to the speaker. The vibration of the sound is detectable for the cat and replaces the lack of input from hearing. I stayed at somebody's house for a week and they had a deaf cat who lived in the guesthouse/garage area. (The owner didn't want cat hair in the house so she was more or less condemned to live like a prisoner in the cellar) There were only very high small windows where she could not climb up to. She was all over me as soon as she came around from being startled from my appearance. She was longing to be touched so much, and I could even pet her with my full hand tapping quite roughly on her sides. I got the owner to give her a radio and he did. Now I think I must give him a second cat so that the deaf one has a playmate and can follow visual clues from it. Obviously I will consult with the owner first. If I did not have a 20 year old cat myself I would consider taking her from that understimulated lonely place.
I adopted a def cat that was due to be put down.. 3 yr old male.. I have a 5 yr old male, no issues. Thanks for the tips, most are basic common knowledge but every bit helps, thank you.
