  • More than 50 years later, the name Betsy still holds legendary status in south Louisiana, serving as a memory of the utter devastation hurricanes can wreak.
One of the direct results of Hurricane Betsy was construction of a massive flood-protection system by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, designed to prevent a repeat of the widespread flooding caused by the storm. For 40 years, it held -- and for 40 years Hurricane Betsy was the storm by which all other hurricanes were measured in New Orleans. Then came 2005's Hurricane Katrina, which laid bare the inadequacies of that federal levee system, in the process giving New Orleans a new hurricane high-water mark.

My family was there. I was 6 years old. We lived in the 9th Ward. We made it out safely by the grace of God but the memories are vivid.

But what did Betsy do in the French Quarter? It seems like no storm has impacted that area of New Orleans with wind damage quite like the storm of 1915

they don't know for sure how strong the winds were. The gauge blew off the roof when winds hit 150 MPH. And that's a fact recorded in the Civil Defense and Corps of Engineers reports taken at the time as it happened.
