@@Nightdreaux22647which is why that hesitation was everything. He had a clear shot to end the fight. And its pretty heavily implied in the animated series that Agni Kai is a duel to the death, hence Zhao urging "DO IT" when Zuko has him on the ground, poised over him.

I think Gyatso was no longer there because he told Aang the one thing he really needed to tell him: that it wasn't his fault and that he couldn't have done anything to save them that day. He stayed in that realm and didn't move onto the other side like the other airbenders specifically because he needed to tell Aang that and once he did, it was finally time to move on.

    • @sebastianjoseph2828

Agreed. It hurt that Gyatso didn't tell Aang that he'd have to go once Aang left, but he probably knew that Aang would be hesitant to leave if he knew and Aang needed to save his friends in time.

Before this series came out, I was worried for Dallas Liu, not because I thought he was a bad actor or anything (I was unfamiliar with his work). I was worried because Zuko is such a complex character, and I wasn't sure if it could be portrayed as well in a live action.
However, Dallas has blown me away with how well he handles the depth of the character. Even when he isn't saying anything, I can see the complexities in his eyes. He doesn't play him exactly the same as the original, but I couldn't be more pleased with his performance. I am really hoping we get books 2 & 3 because I really want to watch his version of the character grow.
Seriously, whoever thought of that 41st division crew change deserves a raise...it's one of the most impactful changes for me with this show.

I think we all were worried. having a young actor having to play such a complex character, would easily be messed up and ruined one of the best redemption arcs in media history.

we don't even know if it was a fireball though, all we hear is the fire and Zuko's scream. For all we know, it could've been the exact same way in the animated series, which would explain why the scar is pretty concentrated over his eye and back to his ear. If it were a fireball to the side of his face, he'd be looking more along the lines of Two Face

I agree the stuff with the fire temple and Roku was a weird thing that i wonder why they even had it. • @sebastianjoseph2828
      @sebastianjoseph2828 5 місяців тому +3

I think they did the Fire Temple thing for a couple reasons. They needed to introduce Roku since Kyoshi took over a lot of the introductory avatar stuff (due to the early location/timing of Kyoshi Island). They needed to show that Roku and all the avatars have vastly different personalities and are individuals (hence why they made him a lot goofier than the stiff/rigid Kyoshi). And then they needed to show that not all Firebenders are evil or on board with the war. They did that in part with the failed rebels Azula tricked but it helped to show benders and those in institutions might have doubts too. And lastly having June capture Aang lets him learn how powerful nonbenders are getting by in this world- with apathy. I agree it's the clunkiest part of the episode though, with questions like how June tracked Aang to the island.

Clunky bits of the episode aside, Dallas Liu I think has a prestigious acting career ahead of him. He telegraphs so damn much on his face even when he's not saying anything. Like how when Aang talks about snoring, he cracks a tiny smile and then the effort to school it back down to indifference. And lord, the waiting to cry until his father left, and again when his crew stands at attention for him. I can't even pretend I didn't sob my way through most of this ep. To an extent I think Paul Sun-Hyung Lee's version of Iroh is also using his jovialness as a mask the same way Zuko uses his anger. Some read it as him being weird and stiff, but when you compare those scenes to when he's being sincere, there's such a huge difference in delivery that I think it's very intentional. At this point I don't even care if we get a season 2 or how good it is, I would watch it for Dallas Liu and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee alone. I just adore their takes on Zuko and Iroh. To take material I'm already intimately familiar with on multiple rewatches and still make me feel THAT HARD is impressive.

In the series, we get the impression that Zuko refused to fight and wound up getting scarred by Ozai’s first attack.
But here…..Zuko DOES fight back……but he shows his Father mercy……the way he places his hand on his Ozai’s chest. Like he truly believed his father would never hurt him…..

I have some issues here and there, and some of the acting of the younger actors has felt unconvincing at times - but they're child or new actors and they'll grow into their craft, so I'm not worrried. The other episodes I felt had a problem with rushing the emotional beats, but this one allowed those beats to fully land, which for me set it above everything else in the show. I also loved the addition of the 41st to Zuko's story - that was a great way of showing he's more a good yet damaged kid than evil. I do agree with what you said about Roku and the temple feeling a bit shoe horned in here. I will also say that I get why Roku is changed here. In the show, Roku was the only one that really helped him, until the finale anyways. So he had to be portrayed as this all knowing wise sage like character so he could answer all of aangs questions and guide him.
But the creators of this version obviously wanted multiple past avatars to help him so if Roku was the same as the cartoon and knew everything then it makes Kiyoshi's role redundant and pointless. So while I prefer the original as always, I do like and understand what they did here.

Not much of Roku's personality was explored in the 1st book, and that's fine because he played a very specific role of a wise teacher for aang. I wouldn't say he's formal and regal though. like yeah sure he grew up with the crown prince but ultimately chose to live a chill life on an island. definitely was a jokester (earth surfing with sud, air gliding with gyatso, dude knew how to have fun) but I do agree we've been shown that in his later years he has more of a straight-face humor delivery. would be interesting to see if this is a weird portrayal of Roku or we are just not privy to all aspect of his character yet, considering that the og creators still work with this adaptation behind the scene after their departure to build up the lores, and they still have writing credits in this episode.

This was Zuko's episode. I loved it. I LOVED the addition of the 41st being Zuko's crew. I found myself getting more emotional than i usually am while watching this show and i didn't know why until i thought about it. I realized that I got emotional because they're doing it. They're finally doing a faithful live action version of the show i grew up with. I got my hopes up and than crushed with the trash movie that came out in 2010 and finally seeing it done right, activated that child in me. And i LOVE that it's not a copy paste but it still brings the nostalgia with it at the same time. It has it's rough edges for sure but it's still a great show.

  • @FineAndAndy

I really agreed with a lot of your discussion especially comparing this episode with episode 3. That melding of storylines (Jet, the Mechanist, and Bumi) really worked because those characters provided naturally contrasting viewpoints on a key issue: how do the people experiencing the war lose themselves/their ideals in various ways. Jet was willing to commit atrocities in search of vengeance; the Mechanist was committing treason in order to protect his son; and Bumi had lost hope because of having to make similar hard choices over and over for so long. I think that episode was at times a bit clunky, but ultimately had a cohesive idea in the way that episodes 5 and 6 really didn't. I also wasn't a fan that immediately after episodes with the clear message that the way Aang will succeed is by relying on his friends to help him, they immediately split up the team and have him spend almost two entire episodes doing things himself.
And perhaps the best part of episode 6, the twist with the 41st division, IMO could have been much stronger if it was ZUKO'S CHOICE! I couldn't believe the missed opportunity here. Iroh's comment that they owed their lives to Zuko's sacrifice felt a little off after we watched Ozai give the order in the flashback. But imagine what that flashback scene could have been: after "It is done" Ozai starts walking out the door and Zuko yells after him "Let me take the 41st for my crew!" That also would have bolstered Zuko's philosophy stated earlier in that scene that maybe the "weak" just need time to become stronger.

Also not a big fan of Roku or the fire temple here, but the thing that bugs me a lot in this episode is that they never resolve the problem they posed in the previous episode. Aang frees the villagers and his friends from Koh, sure, don't think you needed to put Koh here at all but fine.
The problem with how they mashed things together here though is that there is no resolution for Hei Bai, they're never healed, as far as we know that spirit is still rampaging and all those villagers will just get captured again. They set up what was necessary for the resolution in the previous episode but they just never actually resolved it, Aang just gets the people back and leaves.

I have similar thoughts as you, I love the addition of the 41st being his crew because they were going to be sacrificed. Roku is my favorite past Avatar and I don't love how they how portrayed him. I get that Kyoshi is a fan favorite and featuring her more appeals to the fan base, but I miss how involved Roku was.
One of my biggest complaints about this live action show is they chose to undercut the most important relationships of the show, which is Katara and Aang, to connect everything with Aang and Gyasto. I enjoy the Gyasto references, but it shouldn't have been done by removing the importance of Katara to the story, which I feel they did. Roku is central to the story, because ultimately all of this isn't Aang's failure but Roku's, and I love that it shows that after his death Roku is still trying to fix the mistakes of his own past, something that audiences watching this live-action version wouldn't understand.

So I think the 41st division was a great addition that many of the OG fans wanted from the live action. There's some obvious dialog and plot issues here as well like with Ozai and Iroh. One thing specifically is that Zuko is stronger/more skilled than Ozai? I get what they were trying to go for but it's too cheap and robs Ozai of his danger. It wasn't close and wasn't because he chose mercy that Zuko got his scar, it was challenging authority and disgracing the family name by using his status to openly agree to an Agni Kai. Zuko took it as standing up for the greater good. Ozai took it as a bratty child using his status to naively challenge a seasoned general for what would be best options in war, not offering a better solution, and willing to fight or use his power and status to get his way. Both these ideologies needed to clash as a reminder that it was his challenging authority and his self entitlement that forced this "Tough love" on Zuko. Ozai crying over it was a bit disconnected from the character motivation. He views his son as weak for sure but more so he views his son more akin to his wife. It was due to Ozai's usurp of Iroh position that cost him his wife. It was supposed to be Zuko who paid that price but his mother took his place. Ozai killed his father and took power anyway. This is why Azula is his favorite that she saw Zuko's weakness and tries to take his spot for succession just as Ozai did to Iroh. This new motivation puts some awkwardness, for one Ozai isn't as strong as a Young Zuko and almost lost to him in an Agni Kai. This means Iroh, Toph and Azula herself are all way stronger than Ozai which makes him less of a threat. Two, that Ozai views weakness as the higher issue over order and thus wouldn't care this son challenged a general since that's a sign of strength which he values over order. He also lets Iroh talk however to him when Ozai views power over order. This is again contrary to the in world messaging they're establishing in the live action. So by their own rules it doesn't make sense. Again, nothing looks lived in like everyone is cosplaying instead of function fashion. Roku scene was awful and the totem seemed arbitrary to the narrative. Ko was cool but it overlooked the bigger and more thematic Hei Bai. As another reviewer mention, Hei Bai sets up the theme of avatar and foreshadows the Moon and Ocean spirits. Hei Bai represents like the avatar balance between the worlds which the fire nation disrupts. The avatar himself is symbolized by the acorn to Hei Bai that the destruction can be reset and balance restored by the new generation like Aang being reborn to do just that and Yue becoming the Moon Spirit. Ko trades all their lives for a statue makes no sense since he literally there to eat them. Ko didn't even take the people or Katara and Sokka on purpose, they accidentally ended up in the spirit world and taken by accidentally avoiding Hei Bai. It's a poorly thought out reason with alot of post hoc reasoning that again doesn't make sense just to play fan service instead of establishing a reason. In the animation, Aang discovers his avatar state is powerful enough to stop Ozai, the strongest fire bender. He discovers that in order to control it, he has to first master the over bending styles in order of the cycle for maximum efficiency. Thus he starts with water bending just like Katara who is almost motivated to master water bending herself. This gives them something to mutually bond over and even create tension between their character flaws. Aang learns first hand that his very existence will bring destruction because both sides are fighting harder now that he's there to give people hope to end the fire nation's reign.
The show says fuck all of that, lets just have Kiyoshi tell him instead of the audience seeing it played out because they're children. Lets tell send Aang north to fulfill that destruction plan because he doesn't need to learn the other bending if the avatars can just swap places with him. The avatars don't tell him he needs to master the elements first to master the avatar state thus has no real reason to seek a master especially since he doesn't even want to learn from or with Katara, again inadvertently more misogynistic than the animated show. Make sense why they didn't want Katara being the motherly figure and stripping Sokka of his humbling arc that Suki, Katara, Yue and Toph show him. None of him realizing that he's the weakest one of the three. None of him learning to becoming a leader to maximize his teams potential. Just him being a "sigma" playboy man with Aang's humor and Katara's maturity. It missed the whole purpose of Hei bai episode that mirrors the messaging of the whole show of imbalance being corrected by the fruiting generation to take down the establish order of might and order is right, not freedom and understanding. Again making it shallow for fanservice that new viewers don't care about all the spirit animals and guest appearances. Look the many faced god who is Ko's mother easter egg isn't the smart or insightful plot device they thought it was. It makes the whole two episodes shallow. Gyatsu stayed from crossing over to the afterworld just to tell Aang, Roku is looking for you for Roku to not even warn Aang of the comet but to troll him and the audience and give a totem back to Ko. It's like pick a lane, you want us to compare the show to the animation or not? because you're failing on both fronts. As a stand alone it's pointless and misses the deeper messaging the show did better with less time. If you're going to bank on fanservice this wasn't it either. Zuko and Sokka are carrying this show and it shows why, the writers are super misogynistic themselves didn't learn from the show.

The escape and everything between Aang and Zuko, and the stuff with Zuko and his backstory and Iroh, that’s all great. Generally agree with you, everything with the Fire Nation in this show is spectacular. I know you feel like there is but let’s put it this way doesn’t show up until the end of the first season and all he really does is just explain who the water and moon spirits are to aang. so to me code didn’t come off as any particularly important character in the anime series just there to extend the narrative or explain the narrative but here it’s basically the same thing he wasn’t like anything major just a lot scarier to be honest with you

Hey, one more comment it’s not that I’m going to give the live action a pass but I’m kind of letting them. I’m waiting for the narrative to continue to see how it can how it keeps going. I am really not having a major issue with an eight episode, run of a live action version of avatar so far if they made it a 1012 episode series, that may be a different story, but for eight episodes and things that had occurred in the animated series if they tried to squeeze what was the first season into these eight episodes I don’t think it would’ve worked out to be honest, I think, picking and choosing certain elements for this first eight episode season I think they’re doing an OK job so farit’s a tough show. It really is a tough show to translate.
