      1 of the few things I can say the Netflix series did better than the original Nickelodeon series was expanding upon Ozai & Iroh's relationship as brothers. In the original series they never are on screen together, but here there are multiple times they interact with each other, which adds more to their backstories & character developments. Also, having the 41st Division be Zuko's crew was a nice detail that I'm glad they included.

      Iroh should’ve stepped in once Zuko lost the Agni Kai, and taken Zuko’s place as Ozai’s opponent, even if Ozai had played dirty, and had Azula stepped in to help him if he about to lose. And the white lotus should’ve just stepped in long before in general, no wonder the war took 100 years, when nobody with actual power did anything, also Ozai utilizing the archers and Azula much earlier in the war, I know Asula is very young, but still.

    Great reaction and analysis! This was such a quality episode, and my favorite iteration of Zuko thus far, in any version! I also loved the nuance Dallas (and the writing) brought to the character here. In the OG, we were told, in "The Storm" that Zuko is compassionate, as illustrated by his attempt to save the new recruits. But here, those aspects were developed since the beginning, in the writing and the performance. It's clear from early on that at baseline he's a broken, traumatized, but kindhearted, and even gentle child who is desperate and terrified and fighting to hide his true nature because he's literally been brutalized for being who he is, and has been trained by his father to not only hate himself, but to deny all of his natural, purehearted inclinations. The scene with Aang was such a great character moment for Zuko, because it's clear that at their core, he and Aang truly are similar people. Both are honorable, empathetic, and compassionate, so Zuko literally has to fight with himself not to like Aang. And that's not just because Aang is his target, but because he's also such a perfect mirror to the child Zuko was before any of this happened. When he attacked Aang (after "do you think we could have been friends?") it really read as Zuko's defensive reaction against the version of himself that he's been trying so hard to erase to win his father's approval. And you can see on his face, both before and after, how raw and devastated Aang's words made him feel, because they're so exposing. And that's further driven home when he gets back to the ship, and the gratitude of the 41st is a reminder of exactly who he is, and what he's been denying about himself for three years. And the shame he feels at the end, when he's looking in the mirror, and seeing himself as he once was...it reads like shame that he's changed so much, but also, in some ways, that despite his attempts, he hasn't truly changed his nature at all. Just really solid writing anchored by a beautiful performance. As you guys said, this episode showcased exactly the type of adaptation that we all want from this show. I really hope we get a season 2. Not getting to see Dallas Liu complete Zuko's arc would be truly unfortunate...but once again, great reaction! Looking forward to the next one!

      Beautifully put! I agree with everything here. The character work is always what made Avatar a special series and to see these Actors bring these characters to life is powerful stuff!

    Ozai is very red pilled. He is not evil for the sake of being evil. He is purpose oriented. What I love about this show is the fact that all sides perspectives are understandable within each character world view!

      Daniel Dae Kim is fantastic as Ozai because it is hard to get a read on the character through his performance.

    So many people had so much to criticize, but I agree so much about Dallas and his performance, I loved the series. As an avid lover of ATLA I just loved the way the actor's presented this live action, it was fascinating to watch the characterse come to life and see the young actors create such emotionally enveloping performances. Just loved it.

    Great reaction! One subtle thing that really breaks my heart in this episode happens when Ozai is talking to Zuko after he burned him. He tells him he’s weak and banishes him, and the thing that gets me is Zuko doesn’t say a word back. That says a lot about the character dynamic that we don’t see on screen, but also, I think in that moment, Zuko believed him.

    • @TheMontyVerse
      @TheMontyVerse  6 місяців тому +3

      ABSOLUTELY! Zuko constantly struggles with his own self worth due to being constantly manipulated and controlled by his father. He never thinks he is worthy after this, it is why he shaves his head also, to show the maximum amount of shame during his banishment.

    Agree that Dallas did a very good Zuko, both as a younger version of him and as the obsessed older version. Meanwhile there are people who couldn’t get past his delivery of “he ran!” In episode 2.
