Buying chickens from a hatchery through the Mail.
Preparing for and picking up day old chicks from the U.S. Post Office, what do expect www.FredsFineFo... A short video demonstrating the importance of picking up your mail order chicks as soon as possible. They do suffer stress and require immediate attention and a proper environment. Some Post Offices frankly don't care about shipped chicks... it's up to YOU to provide your contact information and be prepared to go immediately to the post office and pick up your chicks when notified. I've heard all the stories of chicks left on loading docks while just ten feet into the building would have changed the temps 30 degrees. I've also learned that at times, people order chicks and then just don't feel it's convenient to go get them, or even forget that chicks are arriving on a certain day. Our Post Master shared with me that one woman just said "just give them away, I can't deal with that right now"... Please, don't order chicks unless you are prepared and willing to care for them when they make the trip. Learn MORE about raising chickens by following this link: www.amazon.com/...
Hi Debbie, thanks for much for your comments... and compliment about my video... very nice of you.
pine shavings are best and yes, they ultimately need bedding. The shavings give them good footing and absorb moisture from their droppings. Then you can put it on your garden and so on. Bedding also gives them something to scratch through and sleep in. Some use wire cage bottoms, I've never liked that method.
News Paper is placed on the floor.. just to start them off. This allows them to find their food and start off right. Then pine shavings are added as substrate, this provides better traction. Large breeds specifically, may suffer leg damage, if kept on smooth brooder surfaces.
Hi, I'm glad you liked the video!
When you receive your chicks, you will need water of course ("> and your own supply of what's called Chick Starter rations. They come in CRUMB, or MASH. I prefer the crumbs. They will eat that ration until they are about 6 weeks old. Hope you really love rearing your birds.
Hi thanks for posting... I have done tests with the sugar water and quick chick mixes... starting chicks with sugar water, quick and plain water. There was no marked difference in how quickly they recovered. So, it's important to give them water first, then feed... but the content of the water is up to you. Sugar gives them carbs, but then, they do have nutrition inside them already and chick starter crumbs will get them going. Have fun! Some nutritionally deficient chicks need vitamins.
I think changing out from the cedar chips is a good idea... the oils in cedar (which is why we like the smell) can be irritating to baby chicks. Also, as you may know, cedar doesn't break down in the garden as readily as do pine shavings. And you're most welcome!
big pet store chains normally carry pine shavings also. You can also look up feed stores, they carry them cheap, by the bail around $5.00 each
Thank you for commenting and I'm glad you are enjoying them!
Thank you for taking time to comment.. much appreciated!
An open plate of water will get soiled quickly and the birds can walk in the water, not the best solution... you can also use rabbit or guinea pig drinkers... they go to the little spouts of those pretty quick and it isn't messy.
I recommend that you contact the poultry fowl trust... they have breed listings throughout the UK.... I wish you the best of luck!
How cute I love when they make this sound...... So Adorable...
Yes you can, just be sure there aren't any loose threads the chicks can pull out and swallow ("> towels are great because you can just launder them and re-use. Thanks for your comment!
@Lacey8246 First of all, it's very rare for them to take three days in transit, normally they ship Saturday and I pick them up Sunday (yes, our post office calls us even on Sundays). A baby chick is self contained as just prior to hatching, it absorbs the remaining albumen (egg white) this is adequate food and water for several days. A mother hen sitting on eggs remains until all her brood hatch, this absorption of nutrients allows all chicks to stay put until all have hatched.
That's awesome!!! I can't wait Monica.
I hope everyone clicks on your page to check out all the natural stuff you do!
Thank you for the post! I'm so glad that you found the information useful... I wish you well with your chicken venture!
various breeds... dark brahmas, partridge rocks and a silver sebright...
thanks, I'm glad you bought it and enjoyed the information... congrats on your silky brood...
@MrLuke6593 For larger breed chicks this is true that they may have problems getting their footing and leg difficulty may result. i always start on news paper for the first couple of days (many layers deep) to insure they understand what their food is. By the second or third day, they are on pine shavings. Thank you for all the exclamation marks, but all my practices are sound and you will never see improperly developing chicks or adults and I have been doing this for a very long time.
Thanks, I'm so glad you found it to be helpful!
We didn't, I'm just always ready for that and we look for any that seem to be struggling first thing... at times, they are all doing fine right away, but we still use heat in the car just in case.
You can see Justin lifted the edge of the top and noticed it before he pried off the staple side.
@drawinglegogames True... generally baby chicks will explore and immediately find water and food... chicks after going through shipping may at times be weakened and not do their normal exploring, so it can be a great benefit to those individuals that may otherwise simply sit in a corner and worst case scenario, expire. So, my motto is, it certainly doesn't hurt them to have their beak dipped and can indeed be a help. Nothing to lose by doing that. But you are correct, most find it just fine.
@gokory yes, his name is Justin and he enjoyed the chickens, he also used to do his homework in with Emu flock... "bird boy"
They will not send them overseas, but I have known people to ship fertile hatching eggs by air. It's also true that "some" mail handlers don't care about living shipments... you just hope they care enough to handle them carefully.
Well, as you may guess, well off in the sticks... The point I was trying to make is, that no matter the time of day or night, nor how far the Post Office, you have to be ready to GO.. the moment the chicks are IN. :) And of course, the drive segment was a chance to enter lots of text. Sorry it was so long... like our winters...
I obviously would... but then, I'm a tad overboard... warming the chicks can literally come down to minutes if they have been chilled in transit. You just do what you can...
@ilovelife160 Please watch the entire video before commenting... I discuss that issue. I've never had a chick with splayed legs (you say "spayed"...?) Thank you for your concern, you are correct in that they should not be reared on newspaper.
The chicks in this video are from Murray McMurray... I normally simply hatch my own from my breeder flock. I did this for educational purposes.
@CrispyJell That isn't blood, it's a gel that is included called "quick chick" a sort of energy food while they travel. Sorry it startled you... (">
oh ok ive got my brooder all set up in teh basement i just have to go to the feed store and order my chicks ,,ive got cedar chips in it though i may switch it out to pine shavings. thank you for making this videos :)
I just got 12 fuzzy babies there 2 days old and found the food and water in the first 5 mins
Thanks for this video regarding baby chicks.
You can go online to Murray McMurray or Stromberg's Chickens and Game Birds as two really nice sources for your chicks... pick a breeder that is near to where you live for easiest transition. I also have a UA-cam on how to order your chicks... terms and other considerations.
Yah don't want one in the corner starving when u could put his beak in water and have him live and it's hard because we got a feeder with only 12 holes and they are dumb and have to fight over one hole so we are out there a lot getting the ones not eating to eat
thank you, yes they did fine and have fostered many generations... (">
I already have... it's in the DVD titled Regarding Chickens, it's available all over the internet (">
Just type in a google search DVD Regarding Chickens
do they really need bedding or can i just use news paper or cedar chips?
hay and straw are not a good choice for bedding.. not absorbent enough and may cause respiratory problems... also prone to mold and matting.
I have silver sebright bantams too
How can day old baby chicks be on the road for three days???
i hope your chicks are ok
@ZenMaster1992 I write about poultry and post information regarding their growth, development and behavior. We raise chickens free range in rural Pennsylvania and supply chicks that we breed to local backyard, 4-H and other free range flock owners...
Is it ok if I put a plate of water because I only have 1 water thing
I'm getting ready to raise some chickens and this vid really helps thanks
You're welcome :)
@cowboysamax These chicks are now six years old.... ("> but you can certainly order chicks from Murray McMurray anytime....
*excellent reference.
one problem though is on newspaper alone their feet can slip causing splayed leg most people would suggest putting down newspaper then woodchips (like you would use for guinea pigs, hamsters, etc just not cedar) that way they have something to get traction on ive always used wood chips with success
Hi Nikki... this is the arrival day... several layers of paper allow them to get their footing. If you start with wood chips, they are apt to ingest bits of wood rather than their food. You can also spray water on the newspaper, allow to dry and this provides a rougher surface for larger breed chicks. And you are correct, pine shavings, never cedar. Thank you for your post! After they recognize their food and are eating well, wood shavings are added. Chick grit is also important.
i have heard they can ingest the wood chips but i never had a problem. when we first got my flock of 40 they were put in a brooder with wood chips and a chick feeder and they never went for the wood chips they just focused on the feeder. ive never heard about spraying the newspaper with water though ive just always heard not to use it at all.
nikki marlow In the past, people have written to me who had problems with chicks eating their sawdust sized wood chip fragments... it's a method we figured out, just to be safe and always start them without shavings for the first day... large heavy breeds need to be put on old towels or something else that they can get their footing on. Most chicks are ok on news paper for the first couple of days, then add the chips...
the chips i use i wouldnt count as "sawdust sized" they are pretty large compared to day olds. i use pine bedding like what would be used with guinea pigs or hamsters and never had issues but i may try the newspaper thing when i get my bantams in February though
nikki marlow You will notice pretty fast if any of the chicks are having footing problems... because we hatch every week, it's just a practice that I've kept up. Getting them on feed quick has been a plus... you will do what works for you... I wish I had demonstrated how to rough-up the newspaper for this video...
oh my goodness this is so perfect, it's been my dream for a while to have chickens. i'm a very strange teenager but regardless, your video is an exce
Thanks Mad Bad...

AWESOME
I saw blood in the box :s
@andrewtambling tell them Fred from Fred's Fine Fowl sent you!!! ("> ("> they are friends of mine...
If you dont know what to do once they artive or afterward you shouldnt get baby chics.I did research on them for a bout a month or so before I got my chics.I wasnt there when they arrived but I still had to clean then help them learn how to eat deink. If you dont know this they can die in few hours. One of mine died at 3 days old because she was the weakest one.She was also the smallet.Like rubert from charletts web.Exept she died. But my dad told be she was being taken care of well. She was just too weak. Now 5 or 4 months later I have 3 healthy happy and beatiful chics.By babys!!😂😂😂😂😂😂
@ANIMLLOVRZZ66 Thanks!
never ever use news paper for baby chicks its just common sense unless you want splayed leggs !!!!!
Where did you see the splayed legs? If you wet the paper, or provide lots of layers as shown here, they get their footing just fine. IF you do see them having problems getting traction, you can wet the newspaper and let it dry so it's rougher. Thanks for all the Exclamation points. :)
Thanks (">
@HTCSWEOD oh phew! glad it wasn't xD
