"TIE A YELLOW RIBBON" is one of Tony Orlando's biggest hits - it was always playing on the radio, way back when.
And it started a timeless tradition!!!
I had that record in elementary school- I listened to whatever I could find in our big old cabinet size record player- 😆 Every thing from “Squeez box” The Who- to “Behind closed doors” by Charlie Rich- and In between- I just loved the music whether I got the lyrics or not- oddly, I usually got the lyrics pretty well- 😳🤯😁. Great times!!✌️

👍💕
Yes, they were the best of times... enjoying youth without a care in the world - and always great music playing on the radio.
Is he still alive?
@@michaelasay8587
Yes, Tony Orlando is 77.
Their song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon” was a huge hit when it was released in ‘73. It became even more culturally and historically significant, however, during the Iran hostage crisis which began in ‘79. Everyone wore yellow ribbons pinned to their shirts and tied yellow ribbons around their trees to display the collective support and hope of all Americans as we anticipated the release and return of the hostages.
I remember studying for a French presentation when I heard the news on the radio. There were celebrations and no actual school work was done the next day - all of the yellow ribbons came down around campus and off of our uniforms.
Later, whenever my husband was deployed in the sandbox the kids and I had as many yellow ribbons as possible around our qtrs.
@@mj95b yes, I remember it well! Jubilation everywhere and a collective sigh of relief. That had been a long 444 days!
We still put them up if a family member or friend goes off to serve.
I like this one. They were super popular when I was little. "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" was something of an anthem for soldiers away from home.
He should check this one for sure
"Candida" is my favorite Tony Orlando and Dawn song. It's super catchy and an instant repeat song for me.
My late husband and I started to date when this song came out. He lived above me and when he came home from work he’d knock 3 times for me to come upstairs! It’s a very fun song for me with wonderful memories. Hope you enjoyed it!
What a great memory to have of you and your late husband! Hugs and sympathy 🤗
My first love too our bedrooms were completely lined up! Thank you J great memories 😊
Shirley ❤️❤️❤️
His mega hit was "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Around The Old Oak Tree"
Saw them at a dinner theatre in the 70s. He kissed my Mom in the audience. Haha…. She almost lost her mind. ❤️❤️❤️❤️. Good memories!
I miss you Mama!
Yellow ribbons are still used for those coming home (even though the guy coming home in the song is coming from prison maybe) from the military for their song "Tie A Yellow Ribbon". I'm pretty sure that song started the ribbons for a cause.... Though younger people may not know it.
OMG! Flashbacks to sitting cross-legged in front of the TV watching their variety show! Such catchy songs 🎵 🖤
Yes!!!
Early grade school we would sing this and "Tie A Yellow Ribbon".
Tony is gonna be out in Tampa in concert soon
I used to have the biggest crush on him when I was 11 yrs old !! They had a variety show . You must listen to Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the Old Oak Tree was about a man coming home from serving time in prison & asking his sweetheart to send him a single she was still waiting for him.
I used to LOVE them as a kid! They had a variety show in the 70’s and were great together. The group was comprised of Tony Orlando and ‘Dawn’ was two female singers, Telma Hopkins and Joyce Wilson. Candida is my favorite from them.
And can I get a reward for getting here first and request Leona Lewis doing ‘Run’? Like Vanessa Williams, probably not requested much but definitely a hidden gem (she’s got those mesmerizing eyes too 😉).
I was suprised to find out the Candida album (contained the songs "Candida" and "Knock Three Times") did not include Telma and Joyce. They became 'Dawn' after the success of those songs.
@@surlechapeau What!? 😮 I never knew that! Thanks for the info and I’m really thankful they came along.
Run is amazing 🖤
Oh ya. I totally forgot they did a variety show.
THEY DON'T COME MORE CLASSIC THAN THIS,, JUNIOR WALKER & THE ALL STARS "WHAT DOES IT TAKE"
"Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree" is very catchy .
My sister used to play this all the time when she was a teenager 😂
I am so glad to have grown up with all this great music from Tony Orlando and Dawn!!!
I remember this song it was our go to at the roller rink. Stomping our wheels on cue to the chorus. Love your videos.
I came here to say this! KNOCK THREE TIMES! STOMP STOMP STOMP!
YES, Me, too!
I forgot how much I loved them! Always watched their show as a kid.
THIS CLASSIC EVEN INSPIRED IT'S OWN DANCE,, ARCHIE BELL & THE DRELLS "TIGHTEN UP"
I was thirteen, at Ska-Teen Roller Rink. Of course it was obligatory to stomp your skates three times when that part came.
I have the exact memory. Just at a different skating rink!!
A MUST HEAR,, FEEL GOOD SMOOTH SOUL GROOVE,, THE BLACKBYRDS "WALKING IN RHYTHM"..CLASSIC.
I hope you'll react to "CANDIDA" by the same artist. I have always loved him. My vinyl lp of this album had a skip right at "Knock three times on the/on the/ on the . . . " Whenever I hear it somewhere else, I'm kind of surprised that it keeps going, and that I don't have to get up and tap the needle arm. Yep, I'm that old!
Oh! How I love to see the reaction of this delightful young man to songs I loved , sang and danced to when I was a teenager. Thanks for taking the time to share your reaction love it. Isabel
I had such a crush on him back in the day (and he still looks pretty good for an old dude).....I love watching you discover music from the past!!!
Tony Orlando and Dawn used to have a variety show when I was a little girl. We tuned in Every week. They were very talented, and I know Tony and Thelma (one half of Dawn) did some acting, too.
The mom’s sister in Family Matters, Aunt Rachel is apart of Dawn. Amazing voice
In some ways it was a more innocent time although it really only was because there was no internet and things took longer to happen. This song was popular when I was in the Navy and we would drive down the road singing with the volume up. It was just catchy. Nothing sinister, just love expressed in world as it was.
J, you'll love their "Tie A Yellow Ribbon", "Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose" and "Candida". Yellow Ribbon was the song of the year 1973.
Forgot about “Sweet Gypsy Rose”, loved all of them! ❤️🎶
The music of my childhood!! Love it!!
It was a time of innocence back then. Before computers and internet trollers.
Such a sweet and innocent song and time! Go down that rabbit hole, Jay! ❤️🎶
I just listened to this today! My teenage daughter has it in her Playlist. 😀
Loved this show as a kid!!! Came on Sunday nights??? Great show, great song
Every time I saw Telma on Bosom Buddies, I thought to myself "she was part of Dawn!" Besides their hits, Tony Orlando and Dawn also had a variety show in the mid-70s that I remember watching.
Tony Orlando and Dawn were one of the biggest groups of the early to mid 70s. They have three # one singles to their credit. Check out
Candida
Tie a yellow ribbon..
He don't love you
Loved this song as a kid! It was old when I was young, in the '90s, but I still have it memorized.
I loved this song when I was a kid. I had the vinyl album and wore it out. I still enjoy the song, but the older I get, the more stalker-ish it sounds. Great reaction!
Their songs were always catchy and sweet, and fun to sing!
Once again music from the 70's was music to enjoy, music to dance to, music to hold your girl to, just the best era!
I stumbled across my Tony Orlando and Dawn albums last week. My son was dying trying to hold the laughter in. Oddly enough, one of the albums had written across the front Do Not Touch. It's obviously my little kid handwriting, but I have no idea why I wrote that...lol...but I adored Tony Orlando and Dawn more than anything else, apparently.
Joyce Vincent and Thelma Hopkins were the best backing vocals of all time, and Tony was amazing.
Tony Orlando & Dawn was a group of 4. Tony Orlando was the male lead. Dawn was a group (Telma Hopkins & Joyce Vincent were the main singers you always saw with him & Pamela Vincent did backing vocals. Telma Hopkins & I are from the same small city (Highland Park just outside Detroit) & her mother was a part of security at my high school. Her mother was a very nice lady!
Wow! This takes me back! Tony Orlando and Dawn had a variety show, it didn't last long but I remember it.
"Tie a Yellow Ribbon" was another great song. I remember we tied one on our big oak tree in our front yard for the hostages in Iran to come home. I think the song came out way before that event, but I recall hearing the song and the campaign of tying a yellow ribbon on an oak tree during that time in the late 70's into very early 80's
Anyway, great song, great sentiment!
They had so many hits and a very popular TV show.
Oh man, this song takes me way back! Loved it so much I bought the record album.
Tony has such a beautiful voice! I heard, all his songs back then CANDIDA is my favorite. He had to use an alias in 1969 used Wind had a great song, It's only Make Believe. Also had a solo hit early 60s Halfway to Paradise. I believe he's still performing.
One lady from Dawn, played in the hit TV series, FAMILY MATTERS
Thelma Hopkins. She also was on two other TV series, Gimme me a Break and Half & Half. She reunited briefly with her former family matters co star Bryton, her son little Ricky. She played a private investigator on Y&R.
Tony Orlando & Dawn/Tie A Yellow Ribbon (Round The Old Oak Tree)
This was their biggest hit and a huge #1 hit in the early '70's.
What an interesting selection.i remeber this song. I was kid but I rember the chorus. I don't think I have ever really known the words.
I remember this song, Mum and I used to try to sing it, we knew all the words lol. It made us laugh as we couldn't sing lol. This would get people up dancing, he has a good voice though and you can hear every word. I like the musical accompaniment, its a catchy song and my little sisters used to sing it on their way to junior school. Your reactions were great and yes it gets stuck in your head. Take care and stay safe please my friends God bless you all love hugs and peace to everyone Mary-Ellen UK
Ah yes, Tony Orlando and Dawn! "Dawn" are the two female background vocals you hear and they are the voices of the lovely Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson. Tony's biggest hit was "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" They also had a show that didn't last too long on the air for about a couple of years I think in the early 1970s. "Candida" is another one I remember from them too. It has been so long; I hope on your own time you could see them preform these songs on UA-cam. Maybe there might be some remastered video uploaded somewhere because the shows they appeared on are so old the original might not be of good quality, I think. Enjoyed your reaction! Peace!
The melody has such an island 🏝 feel!
Sweet song! ✌🎵❤
👏👏👏👏 my mom and stepdad are a decade and a half apart in age and the only thing we grew up on as kids that they could agree on is oldies and reggae this brings back so many memories
"You don't even know me; I love you." Back then, it wasn't considered as creepy and stalker-ish as it is nowadays. People see things a lot differently now than we did back then.
Yeah, I loved song when I was young. Now it’s classic stalker. Times have changed, and not for the better.
J you have to react to Tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree. It’s Tony Orlando and Dawn’s signature song.
Men were expected to be smooth in the 70's, but it was always lady's choice. Love this song, and Tony Orlando was a cutie.
In Scotland, this is played and everyone gets up to do the slosh!!
A fun song that just makes you smile and sing along! Tie a Yellow Ribbon is another great one of theirs.
How sad is it that a pure, loving, fun song is at first considered creepy.
Lots of very clever writing in these Tony Orlando and Dawn songs. Glad you appreciate it. Tony is currently (Nov 2021) hosting a music show on WABC-770-NYC at 10 pm on Saturday Nights. Speaking of Saturday Night, have you reacted to any Bay City Roller songs?
Classic!!!
Thank you for the memories
💜💜💜
I recommended this a year ago! My favorite song ever!!!
We lived such a simple life 🥰
Infectious! Great rhythms, great lyrics and great singers. No auto-tune or computer tricks. Just people who know how to sing a song that people can relate to. This song instantly takes me back to my childhood, when everything was so much simpler. It's great that you dig this!
Originally the group was just called Dawn, until they distinguished the girls from the male star Tony. The similarly sounding "My Candida" was another pop confection on the radio. They did quite a few TV variety show specials and Telma one of the female singers became a staple on sitcoms
I hope she shows...😂😂🤣🤣 You really bring a smile to my face and a chuckle to my heart♥️😃
10 seconds into the song and I’m already goosebumps second time I’ve smiled today thanks J!
Aww I loved him when I was little. LoL
I used to watch the Tony Orlando and Dawn show with my Grandmother in the early 70’s Some of my fondest memories with her as a little kid. Check out Yellow Ribbon.
Absolutely a fabulous tune in its time.Tony and the girls are beautiful together 👍👍
Now you're going waaayyy back Jay. But you know we love it. I used to listen to this one as a kid( let's just say I'm older than 59 now😉).
Keep going. You're doing great
This wasn't a slow dance song when it came out, quite the opposite. It had dancer participation with the "knock three times," two times etc. You had to mock knock three times with your hands in the air while grooving. It was horrible and fantastic at the same time.
Tony Orlando & Dawn Candida
LOL when I was a kid I listened to this song non stop off of one of my parent's oldies cassettes.
I never heard anyone analyzed the lyrics before like this LOL. I think it's a cute song maybe he doesn't really mean that he loves her maybe he just wants to meet her cuz he hears her dancing by herself a floor below.
Seen them live!! He was brilliant!!! Great songs
I grew up listening to them. I loved tony orlando and dawn..
I love how you started singing along to it - that's what I do every time.
Listen to one of Tony Orlando's earlier hits "Bless You" from 1961
Thanks for the fun memory.
Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree…….
Great song been waiting for someone to play it
Love this song so much. Dawn was the name of the backup singers
I was in love with Tony Orlando. I thought he was the most handsome man in the world.😍❤
May this magical little song I wrote with the late lyrical
wizard
Irwin Levine
Continue to be loved by people of all ages
And music lovers like this wonderful man!!!

Ohhhh you took me back so many years today..its was like 6 years old when it came out.
Candida is another good song of theirs.
Nice, fun song!😄
Please react to CANDIDA. Another hit of theirs ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Still have my original, The Single❤️
Not sure what year this was but I remember it as a young child probably in the very early 70s..thanks for reminding me of it, you make me listen to it with different ears 👍 if that makes sense
Yeah, great song! Grew up listening to this one…love hearing your generation’s perspective on our classics. Like your channel…I’m gonna follow for more musical takes from you! Great stuff!!!
Speechless!!
Yes he was very smooth back in the day
It would be nice if you could see them live in one of their tv performances.
Have this on my playlist! Love it 😊
"Candida" and "He Don't Love You" were my favorites from Tony Orlando & Dawn.
💃. 🕺. 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶❤️❤️
I've always loved this song, it has sort of a Calypso beat. There's nothing better I think than the 70s music.
