- Rough footage of the old shopping center at Illinois Route 83, and St. Charles Road. The Builders Square was originally E.J. Korvettes. The demolition was done to allow a more modern and larger center to be built.
Irving, I thank you for sharing this Elmhurst history video !
Builders Square was a great big-box home improvement retailer!
I did a LOT of shopping up there. Good choices and prices. Too bad they went away. Just like Handy Andy and a dozen more like it.......
Same here Irving..I TOO had been disappointed to see that Builders Square went away. I forgot all about Handy Andy--wow
Latest news in town is that the oldest house (Hill Cottage, 413 S York) will be torn down.
@@ipfeldspar The house is still there in 2020. It was built in 1842. They must have changed plans.
Blockbuster Video!
Back in the days when Elmhurst had a bunch of video stores.
Irving P. Feldspar Blockbuster was on Route 83 and St Charles Road, Hollywood Video used to be at the corner of North Ave and York Road, now we’ve got Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and Peacock.
This is nostalgic. I believe this went out of business and the square was revamped around the year 2000 or maybe even before. I know in that NW corner of the mall is an expanded Portillo's, which I would imagine is still there, but I have no idea what else is now in the "new" mall.
I remember when this was EJ Korvettes. I used to get my records there. I even remember when they were building EJ Korvettes. I must be old or something.
Rick Cesario One of my earliest memories was being there, about 1965, and as a three year old, I had trouble processing the life sized plastic Santa Clause they had displayed on a spring day. Sigh, I'm getting up there, also!
I remember the old Blockbuster that used to be in the old mall. I was only like 5 or 6 when they built the new mall in that spot. Thanks for posting.
I forgot all about the Blockbuster! Yeah, lots of stuff over there. In my time a lot of those stores changed over many times. Also, the north property line was much closer. The old Elmhurst Public Works (behind the north stores) was removed to make the shopping center much larger.
Yeah, I remember the middle entrance now was basically where the North stores were then. It was a good mall, ever been to the pizza shop in that mall? That place was good.
Nope, never did the pizza up there. I'm a denizen of far south elmhurst so I spend a lot of time lurking around York & Butterfield. Down here, we debate who has the best pizza: Q's, DiLeo's, or County Line.
I miss the Builders Square. It was a little farther to drive than the Menards in Hillside, but well worth the time. Now both are gone....
Ah yes, by my area. We go to Mama Maria's, mostly right by the US Bank by Valette and York Street. Im sure you've seen it before.
I think you are just a little older than me. I remember going in there when it was Korvettes, and I do remember it having the second floor. After that, it was several different business's and I miss the Builders Square!
I was born in Elmurst in 1970. I remember going there when it was Korvettes and then a Kmart if I remember correctly. And the swampy area across the street. My family moved to Las Vegas NV in 1980 and I have lived there ever since. But ah memories...need to make a trip back there I still have a ton of family in the area
I remember the Korvettes. Social media has a pretty good, "I remember Elmhurst when I was Young" Page.
as of now, This became Elmhurst Crossing Shopping Center just when half of the plaza was completed in 2000 when I was born on June 19, 2001
Turns out that the old Sears Store (now Home something) is haunted at the north end. The building was constructed across what had been a former Village Cemetery.......!
I remember when this building used to be an all around store called "Corvettes". with stairways and escalators right in the middle of store leading up to second level with the kids toy section to the left rear as you would exit the escalator going up! Of course that was about 40 years ago. I remember that "Corvettes" went out of business then the building became a single level K-mart store.
Now there’s A Huntington Learning Center, Dressbarn, Avenue, Bath & Body Works, Hair Cuttery, Subway, Massage Envy (Replacing RE/MAX), Luxury Nails Spa (Taking Over Cingular’s Space), Shoe Carnival, Petco, Hallmark (which replaces Blockbuster), Mattress Firm (formerly Back to Bed), Whole Foods Market, Chipotle, T-Mobile and At Home (Kmart however was closing its 83 and St Charles Corner Doors Between August and November of 2017).
And! Few people know that the north end of the Sears/KMart is where the old village cemetery used to be located! (It was removed in the 1950's due to the sandy shifting soil). I never did enjoy shopping that end of the building! Also, keep in mind that the "new" shopping center extends further north than the original. Elmhurst used to have the Public Works garage, back in there, but the town gave up the land for a bigger shopping center. Thank-You very much for viewing and adding your observations. It's those details that really enrich History!
cant belive dom is still there.
Oh man, Blockbuster WAS there huh? Totally forgot. I love how Subway is just like "WHAT? We're not affected by time"
And, that old Sears-Kmart is just sitting empty.......
I think this was 1997? It's in the narration somewhere....
Yup, the original Dominicks chain was bought out and is still running.
I’m guessing you taped this around sometime around 1997 or ‘98, but when did actually film this? (The one with the demolition for the renovated Elmhurst Crossing after that whole concept).
You are in the right time frame however, I never dated/tagged any of the old VHS.
Irving P. Feldspar I figured, but at least you’re trying to get the whole history behind it.
Elmhurst Public Works used to be behind the Portillos, but still the same side of the tracks. There was a deal to move Public Works down to Riverside Drive, which opened up much more land. The new Portillos is now sitting at what used to be the back end end of Public Works. The other stores are Shoe carnical, PetCo, Dominicks, Kohls, Sears/KMart, plus a bunch of piddlin yuppie scum type places....
What, no Chick-fil-A?!?!? #TakeMeBack
Wasn't there some sort of restaurant back in there...?
Looks to me like this was in the late 90s?
damn dominicks is still there? thought they went under?
This video was taken before the 2000s
It’s now a Whole Foods as of Summer of 2015.
Dominick's finally went down. They are making it and all the other ones in the area either a Whole Foods or Mariano's
It'll take at least six months to do the conversion... A lot of folk can't wait cuz that was their neighborhood store. Timing was interesting with the new Mariano's going in on north York!
I forgot, it was spelled Korvettes just like the description states, not Corvettes. Hey I was 6 years old when it was open and only cared about the toy section not how you spell the stores name! ha,ha.
Guessing this was before 2000 that's when Kmart Decided to close them all then 4-5 years later they buy Sears.
The Big Kmart was converted into Sears Essentials from Fall 2005 to Spring 2011 before Kmart revived and then closed by November 2017.
Maybe, 1996-97-98...?
And I hear it is haunted!
I also went a lot to the old Pizza shop, and the old Portillo's (the new one is much nicer)
Yup, a Great Portillo's but they are slightly too pricey for me.
I LOVE Portillo's great place, great food, but I agree, it can get a little expensive. That's why it's a nice summer treat for me a few times when I'm home from school, there are no Portillos in River Forrest where I go to college
Next time you go be sure to watch for the local...
Damn, this is old
All thanks to the miracle of video tape which one could buy at Builders Square........
That old Pizza shop is right where the new Chick Filet is I believe
Alex Patt I'l have to take your word for it. I can rember the bigger places, but the smaller ones are a distant memory.... sigh ...............
