Behringer Pro VS Mini Firmware Update V1.1.1

- Опубліковано 16 чер 2024
- Firmware 1.1.1 update has just been released for the Behringer Pro VS Mini to address some of the issues with the sound engine. Here I'm looking at the voicing and not the additions to the arpeggiator etc.
What's it like? ... take listen suds great on the demo track -but forgive the song! I got a lot of comments in the last video about not making it 'sound good' whatever that means... but can you make good tracks with it? - of course. So I made a full one... and decided to ruin it with another crap rap. Couldn't help but release my inner Mike Skinner :)
Only the beats aren't from the synth.

Love the ending. Everyone stay to the very end.
100% worth it.
For a £90 synth that takes it's inspiration from something I think it's pretty good, and Behringer should be complimented on quick firmware upgrades
Strangely i tend to like some of the Behringer Waveforms better now. They have more "Bottom".
So, pretty much what I said in that B would update this - still not a VS completely, but much improved in doing its own thing, which I actually like to see. This is actually what so many people blast Behringer for in making clones, so here is a nice "Inspired by" synth that does its own sound. Not a clone after all, and much cooler for it. Thanks for the update Starsky.
LOVE YOUR SONG AT THE END! Great comparison, I'm so shocked. I actually think I'm convinced to get one of these lil things!
Thanks Starsky! Great video as usual - really looking forward to getting one of these in my hands.
I think the update has really improved the sound ? Great video -I’m loving the vintage setting
What a lovely demo tune!! 😃 Also, the vintage waves in the VS Mini reminds me of the basic waveforms inside the Kawai K1.
I wasn’t too interested but I am definitely getting one now after this update. Thanks for your videos!.
Don't put yourself down my friend. The track you recorded is wonderful. In my humble opinion it's reminiscent of I Start Counting, not the wonderful and iconic novel or the film of it but the band of the same name who were on Mute Records in the 1980s. This is a massive compliment from me because they're among my favourite recording artists. Top of the Pops should be resurrected so that Starsky Carr can make a special guest appearance. I'm certain that the late, great John Peel would have loved this and played it on his radio show if he was still with us. Thank you for taking the time to produce your fantastic videos.
Love you doin these into tunes, it is fun, 🙏 thanks Mr Carr❤️cheers
Looking forward to your coverage of the Victor which was announced as shipping today 12/12/2023. I have a pair on pre order for my modular rig. Great video. I like this version. It is more in the "inspired by" camp but useful and pleasing in its own right and you can't really take exception to the price. Another great video.
Great update, even more brilliant vid from you Starsky. You win the internet today with your ‘crap’ rap track at the end, Mega!
Vintage, I would say, is definitely a Sample Rate Reduction (and maybe a little bit of Bit Reduction), without a Pre/Post filter in line. I like it. Like you said: it's it's own thing. I would say the firmware has definitely improved the sound of the unit. Dramatically.
Haha cheers… high praise indeed! If only 😂😂
Met you last year on superbooth. Still very nice channel. Love your accent
The new vintage mode sounds like it's going to turn this thing into an industrial machine.
Awesome tune and thanks for the updated review on the synth! Sorry you had to buy your own.
Loved the tune at the end our kid!
Great video, love the demo song
Great tune at the end 🥳
love the funny intro songs on these (actually Ive just heard the outro and that too). Agree that this synth is a lot better after the update)
Amazing, thank you for making these videos :)
Great comparison. Sure, it isn’t a VS but it conjures up nostalgia & as Behringer knows nostalgia sells. Love the finale - your darn right Paula was fit! Haha
I saw the update drop and though "boy...I hope Starsky re-reviews it" and here you are. I've been fencing this one...mainly because I genuinely want a Prophet VS. It's always been my dream synth, but justifying $5k for a synth is very very very hard for me to do. Really wanted the behringer until I saw your review and comparison...Been debating between the SY22, SY35, and this behringer. I get that it's not a proper VS...but I want that gritty digital vector mixing. The new vintage mode sounds like the grit is king and really want to get one now. Thanks!
Someone at Behringer did not think the name through. I keep thinking it's the Pro versus Mini and where is the Mini that the Pro is fighting?
That gear video was gear (as we used to say in my youth)😉
I am not a great keyboard player, but you've certainly piqued my interest with this video. Great to hear the sweet tones of home... (Your accent, not the synth 😊). I'm a Scouse exile in Catalunya.
Off to check out some more of your vids. Ta ra...
incredible review. the left and right was so creative. I appreciate you for that.
Great job on this.
I actually prefer the sound of the mini. Very tempting, especially at this diminished price!
I'm usually looking for ways to take the sheen off clean digital sounds, so I'm loving what I'm getting with the vintage oscillator and the vs minis analog filter.
Your Prophet song sounds like a The Streets tribute! Love it!
Cheers…. That’s exactly what I was going for. Nice one
Great little track!
Love your song, super cool..!
That lovely sustained sweep sound, sounds like the one in the 'Pachanga Boys' track 'Time'.
Really good especially for the money, thank you for the good video 👍
BUMMER about the paraphony. I guess that is one way to get the cost down. I already have 2 paraphonic synths, the Pulse 2 and the Korg EX-800. I am spending my money somewhere else. Good thing you made this video!!!
Thats a very good thought! - people buying this entry level synth that are not beginners just wasting their money instead of getting something more elaborate
I was going to comment on the Poly-800/EX-800 and it's multiple oscillators into a single filter. That never detracted from my love of my old Poly, of course, and I occasionally ponder getting another.
great follow up video
I think it sounds good for the money. Yes it’s not the same as the hardware but you wouldn’t expect it to be.
Hoping they do an update for the other mini synth too, as that is lacking a bit of MIDI functionality that I would like to see.
Anyone else get the impression that they haven't modified the oscillators (besides fixing the buzz issue) but have simply stuck an effect on for the different modes? That vintage mode doesn't sound like a legit low bit oscillator, it sounds like a high bit oscillator with a bit crusher effect added onto it. If it were a low bit osc it wouldn't have the weird beating, pulsing sounds you get when you play two notes at once, it would just have that tinny high end, indicating that the difference is added after the oscillator and isn't in the wave sample itself.
Modern bright is presumably just an eq high end boost.
I think that’s exactly what they’ve done.
Enjoyed your crap rap. Actually really melancholy & emotive! Nice little synth now. Does sound like they listened to your concerns & lifted that straight into the firmware. Unlike the B 😂 very tempted now.
I dont feel like that - they almost just added a bitreduction on the wavetables and still the wavetables dont sound like the prophet
As Starsky says quite a few times, it doesn’t sound like the Prophet. It sounds close but is it’s own sound. And that’s a good thing.
@@novalogue They also fixed the loop points for the waveforms, which is important considering it was ever so slightly out of tune before, and it also makes a big difference in the overall sound of the more complex waveforms. It's a significant improvement over the previous firmware.
The reason it doesn't quite sound like the prophet, I think, is because they reduced the bit depth instead of the sample rate. It's the "wrong" lofi effect, basically (and the two are easily mistaken for each other, because they both introduce digital artifacts, and tend to go hand in hand). Not sure if it's a choice or a mistake, but yeah, the result is a different sound, especially noticeable in the low notes, which are just kind of distorted and noisy instead of having that distinctive ringing overtone that you get with a reduced sample rate.
LOL...What a great vid!!! Good job!
Glad I stuck around for that very PWEI-ish choon at the end. XYZ to PVS
I believe that your previous video may be the most responsible for this firmware update 🙏
Nice. Not exactly the same, but totally worth $99. Glad I got one from andertons.
Now when are you getting the kobol so I can see if it’s any good?
I'm the only one who thinks the Mini sounds much more interesting?
Yep, your the only one
No, there are at least two who think that :)
Nice update. Sadly B seem to still think it "sounds identical to the OG, as it uses the same waveforms" (they just replied to a comment I made in their FB group). I love all 10 of the B synths I own, for many different reasons, as most come exceptionally close to the OG's (which is perfect for the 80s tracks I do), or in the case of Neutron and DM, are superb in their own right, but with this, they may as well call it an SY25 or SY22 as a VS, as 60% or more of the waveforms (as you so eloquently demonstrate) sound absolutely chuff all like the originals.
For £90, a bargain, and in its own right, a cracking synth, but as a former OG VS owner, that's the sound I wanted, and was sold on. Yes the Arturia comes a lot closer (have that too), but one thing I wanted in my home setup is the ability to seamlessly move between hardware and software for production (As a fellow System-8 owner, that's the puppy if you want that level of integration)
Anyway, again, superb overview, thank you
Amazing song!
You've gone all Alex Ball with your tune Starsky. Vocal hooks for days! Haha.
thanks for clearing up the paraphonic/polyphonic question. all info on websites has been so misleading about that
Is that a Prophet in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?!
Blessed are the Euro-people, for they receiveth their behringer before the rest of the world. I put this on pre-order back in summer(in usa). I just saw a kobol demo. We won't see any of this until 2024. The up-side, I guess, is that the firmware version will be current once these synths actually show up.
Haha yeah at least the problems will be ironed out!
No, here in Germany we can’t get one either
I ordered mine from Anderton’s two weeks ago and I got it in three days (Pennsylvania).
@@ThomasBotte ja😒, ich warte auch schon soo lange. Bei Thomann soll er angeblich in 1-2 Wochen lieferbar sein, als ich ihn geordert hab, stands bei 7-8 Wochen. Weißt du was genaueres/anderes?
Habe mein Order gecancelt.
You can hear the behringer has a bit crusher effect (you can hear/see the modulation) and the prophet vs has low bit rate waveforms. Many will definitely appreciate the modulation more than just the static sound.
Love the introsong
Waveshape 96 on the original is one sexy sine wave.
Wow.... That song is kinda great!
So’s your comment
that chorus is brilliant...
Proper geezer!
Excellent work as ever Starsky. Well done getting this video created so soon after the update. I like the improvements but as you say, they’ve not quite managed to emulate the musicality of the original.
hello, great man. the sound is not bad at all. then I don't have any prejudices about a brand or something else as long as it has the right sound for me
Looks like Behringer tried to make it steppy, but as I think that Sequential used different bit depths in the Prophet, Behringer didn't take that into account. The Behringer is now TOO steppy on some waveforms. Or actually pretty distorted. :D
Edit: Still sounds much better. So good update, Behringer.
Edit2: Love your "crap" rap! 😁
Does it have a last note priority for the filter? Normally anything I've had with a single filter, from Baldwin Fun Machine to Arturia Microfreak, the last note played retriggers the filter envelope, or maybe highest note on the Fun Machine, can't remember. 1st note priority is really odd.
This looks very much to me like the so-called "extended paraphony" of the Arturia MicroFreak: polyphonic VCAs but a single, paraphonic filter bloc in the signal. Still a lot more flexible than strict paraphony.
Thanks for that. Hey, the raps not crap......it's to the point...👍😁
That rap wasn't too bad. You might wanna do a rap release. Nice comparisons of both synths!
TY!
Can't get it to update, any ideas..? I've tried almost everything
In the meantime you get an update while we have been spared a new date again and again for 3 months. The release date is now the end of December, You are so lucky in the UK. Even the RSF Kobol is delayed.
no need to apologise, totally class
Love all that digital lo-fi aliasing. I bet one can produce some great weird digital artifacts by using the pitch wheel at the lowest and highest octives.
Also Behringer should send you a case of those things for composing such a catchy theme song, hahaha.
This made me laugh only because I remember a time when aliasing was the absolute enemy. Now it’s desired. Funny how things go in cycles. I too have been finding myself liking the aliasing sound a bit more as long as it’s tamed a bit
soooooo good
IN the '96', is that on all original units as design or possibly an 'older' electronics thing of component degradation?
It’s due to the way the samples work. They’re 128 samples long - which is an F4 or thereabouts. The CPU is running at 240kHz per voice which I think makes this possible.. which reduces aliasing at the top end - it does, however, mean that if you’re playing it lower than an F4then it has to add values into the gaps to create a longer sample. At low notes we need many more samples - 4 octaves lower for example will need 2048 samples to play a note. It therefore has to
‘Invent’ the extra 1920 samples to fill the gaps. This results in the stepping you can see in the oscilloscopes. It is this that creates the additional overtones.
So it’s a result of the old tech (new stuff has enough processing power to interpolate between the samples to smooth the changes or use anti-imaging filters), but it’s not a degradation. It will have done this on day 1.
I love this little synth . They keep updating it. And that’s cool but when is it going to be released.
It’s released here in the U.K. I bought this one in Andertons. They’ll probably ship anywhere.
Andertons UK have a massive supply and have been shipping around the world for a number of weeks now.
nice one
Nice Mike Skinner cameo 😂
Someone’s finally got it!! 😂😂
VS Mini has definitely got its own character, and it's got multiple personalities as well. Certainly not bad for the price. Same goes for the crap rap -- not bad for the price... LOL! Cheers!
It's no prophet, but it fits in my pocket. Not even the iPad Prophet VS does that.
Awsome little tune at the end. I got one in my pocket, too... 😅 🤔that sounds like a sequel to this song.. 😅
haha
Saved! 👍👍
It's the first ad that I watch from start to the end :))
P.S. way too "vintage" IMHO. They could add another "vintage" option that will be really close to the Prophet ;)
Ahh man, don’t call it an ad! That’s an industry where people get paid 😂😂
@@StarskyCarr 😜😄😄
Diring the polyphony demo, was the filter envelope set to multi or single in the menu?
Whichever it’s set on there’s still only a single filter. Multi trigger just restarts it with every key press, so if you’re holding a note and start another the first will drop to the start of the attack.
@@StarskyCarr I was just curious on the setting you were on. I've recieved mine since I commented so I have the answer to my question already. Thanks though.✌
Is this the fix you'd hoped for from uour last video?
Regardless of accuracy I like the idea of small synths. I like the idea of having a compact studio of extremely small hardware synths and even toy.s Like the old little Casio Rapman haha.
That's my goal.
I do like when new iterations of vintage synths are accurate but regardless, if it can make cool sounds, I like it.
JT-4000 review soon?
I really like the Vintage sound. It's got a nice, tapelike sound to it. The whole thing is much more....more than it previously was.
Being digital, the VCA\EG is easy to do as it's all software, but being analog, adding filters would make the whole thing more expensive with 3 additional, discrete filters. And likely put about 30+ quid on the price.
All in all, it's much more desirable than when first released and is a nice little unit in its own right.
Cheers!
I'd pay the 30 quid for discreet filters, having a polyphonic amp envelope but a paraphonic filter envelope is kind of odd. But 9 times out of 10 I'll probably be doing chords or single notes with it so no difference in practice.
@@exhumus agree totally. I think that the price point was important to Behringer. Would be nice to see a larger format version with more filters, like Arturia did with the minibrute. 5 octaves too, please!
@@TheDavidPoole A full fat "Bro-VS" with higher polyphony and fully specced voices would definitely be cool.
three stars!
The track is catchy
i like the lo fi ont that belly like waveform
It would be cool to test 2 pro vs and 2 prophet (or 10 of each if you can:)
All Prophet's sound the same?
And all vs mini?
♫♪♪
The differences you hear in this aren't cause by minor differences in tolerances like you might get with 2 vintage analog synths. These are down to the way the sound is created; different processor speeds, sample length, anti-aliasing and imaging.
I like the idea of the little Prophet VS, but on further thought Arturia's version probably makes more sense to me.
What other VST versions of the Prophet VS, are there?
Why get a limited to the core interface and engine when you can use the Arturia with a midi controller that at least feels good to tweak :D
I actually ended up getting the Pro VS Mini. I love the little thing! It's a bit lofi! I like the character the paraphony gives it too!
Nah, it´s honestly no crap rap, it´s great actually. Like it.
Is that a prophet in your pocket or are you just glad to firmware update V1.1.1?
Is that a Prophet in your pocket or are you just pleased to see us?
I like the Behringer better now 🤣👍🥰
Watching the synth community waver between love and hate for Behringer is quite entertaining. Its like we have our own villain... Much like rapper drama marketing.
Well done, but t 10:57 his sounds much much better with this update ❤, still not an original, but its cool now! 😅I general it sounds thinner and no Low end., the lower register has a problem. Maybe use a further bitrazer to get a better sound? If you want it better at all!
Hi I am trying to find the download, but I am only getting a pdf file from their site. Do you know where to get the firmware?
SYNTHTRIBE app
@@StarskyCarr thanks!
I actually loved the crap rap. Has a definite Pet Shop Boys vibe to it and definitely catchy.
Big difference with the update - definitely worth 90 quid.
Love all of it including the crap rap.. not crap to me.
I could have sworn I've seen a raw dump of the waves online before, but I can't find them now. Surely Behringer can get them and pop them in there for a 4th mode. I wonder if there's some legal barrier. 🤔
I do like the lo-fi sound they added though.
I think they're using the same waves for each mode, but modifying them/processing differently.
As Starsky mentioned in the video, it may be aliasing on the original - not that Behringer has the "wrong" waveforms.
We had a 12-bit Emu Emax SE at university. I made some patches, and the Emax aliased very badly in a very musical way. When the 16-bit Emax II came out, I recall going to the music store and loading a patch, and it was absolutely clean and the musical aliasing was gone. :(
So, it may be the same case here... the original is inaccurately reproducing the source in a musical way, and the Behringer is not.. (i dunno. seems plausible. could be completely wrong.)
Can u stack them and have 8 voices ???
