I had been investigating the Moonman/Majohn C1 & the C4 for some time, and happened to have your review come up. Loved the review Chris. Between the 2 pens I prefer a Japanese style eyedropper, and thus had ordered a C4 which should arrive in the next couple of days. Thanks to this review I have a better understanding of the size of the pen I ordered. Best Regards.
The models I have are the C1,C3,S5 and Q1. I’m glad to see the C4 comes with English instructions and a medium nib. My favourites were the C1,C3, S5. The Q1 was nifty but I haven’t used it in a while .
That shutoff valve is essential. All eye dropper pens should use a mechanism to prevent burping. Thanks for a great review. I like the looks of the clear C4. 👍👍👍(wow 3 thumbs up - my highest rating possible 😎).
Thank you. For me, shut-off valve not required. I've carried around many ED pens & have not had issues. I've had more C/C pens burp. The valve adds complexity & a failure point. I like a simple ED filler.
That's an appealing pen. Though I never understand when the aesthetic choice is made to mix steel and gold colors. Choose one, make all the metal visible in the pen that color.
Especially in a clear demonstrator pen that mixing of trim colors bothers me. I might have to wait for Gen 2 which for me would mean more color options and matching trim. This could become a serious competitor for Opus 88, especially since the Majohn retails for a quarter of the Taiwanese pens.
Looks like what I have been looking for, some pen to replace a clear OPUS 88 that I dropped and broke! I love the shut-off valve-equipped eyedropper. Thanks for the review, since I was unaware of this model. As always, great job! KW
@@Seefood73 Both are overrated anyways, the real heat are those IPG nibs. 😎 On a serious note, since this Moonjuice pen uses a #6 nib, you can just pull out that sucker and pop in either a #6 Jowo or Bock nib, not every pen needs threads to be Jowo or Bock compatible :/
@@i.c.3157 I swap #5 and #6 nibs a lot, but not all are made equal and not all nibs fit all collar+feed combos because of length and thickness. Jinhao seems to be very accommodating to others, PenBBS not so much, the tolerance for thicker nibs is very low, and not all caps are deep enough for long nibs such as the Noodler's Ahab nib. Also many users are not keen on pulling apart nib assemblies like you and I... The one big plus of a #6 Jowo-threaded section is that most of them will also take a Pilot Parallel Pen nib unit without modifications, like Opus88 Omar or demo, or models of Franklin Christoff, and artists love that.
Doug made the point that they are probably keeping Moonman on the actual pen design. All package and web branding can be Majohn so the product can be sold in Europe etc
Thanks for the review, Chris. It’s very useful. Like other commenters I see the similarity to the Opus 88, but think it is less a copy and more an inspiration. I will probably order one, since I’m very fond of demonstrators. After thinking it twice, it seems more like the Conklin All American demonstrator but as an eye dropper.
As you may figure out, I find the fixation on any Chinese pen must be a copy very inaccurate. But these same people don't look at other pens that copy other designs the same. This is a very old filling system. Opus 88 uses it more than most but is certainly not the originator of the design. I focus on the pen in my hand & show that to you.
@@chrisrap52 I would think since this filling system is called Japanese eyedropper, the origins are in... Japan. I'd love to see your reviews of (vintage) Japanese pens with this filling system.
As in all Chinese creations, nothing is random and everything has its own meaning. My theory for the two colors of the parts of the fountain pen. The internal parts like the silver-colored nib, like the moon. The external parts, like the gold-colored clasp, like the sun. Between night and day, clouds of ink immersed in the exceptional transparency of the sky. Thanks Chris for your other professional and helpful review!
Thanks for posting. It looks like it's trying to copy a page from the Opus 88 playbook. The only thing that's a bit weird is that the nib and piston are silver, and the cap clip and ring gold. An all silver look looks more uniform, and would fit it better.
Just watching this again because I'm thinking about buying one. You do great reviews, Chris. I always enjoy them. Question: Which do you prefer, this or the C1? Are you still enjoying this one?
Yes, I use the C4 more than C1. Both hold a lot of ink. I like the C4 slightly more. Bigger, like the look. The C1 is also a good writer but the C4 is a little better in many ways. I forget to open blind cap on C4 is the only downside.
So they've come for the Opus 88. I might, meaning yes I will, get one to see how it feels in hand compared to the Opus, something about their sections just feel nice.
@@chrisrap52 My apologies, it was meant as a more of a joking statement. I used to have one of the older Japanese pens with the valve shut off and until Opus 88 emerged the only people who made them like this was Danitrio and their cheapest model is like 500% more expensive. I'm actually surprised that Majohn beat PenBBS to this.

I guess my mother forgot to invite the Malevolent Fairy to my christening, so I was cursed with every fountain pen randomly burping at my touch. Obviously you Chris, was on the contrary blessed from ever experiencing that. Did your mother immerse you, as a baby, in a cauldron of magic ink, holding you by your heel?😄
I've been using fountain pens for almost 60 years. Have learned a bit. As an engineer I focus on understanding how things work. And I am generally lucky. A tray of broken pens were the unlucky ones, but I learned from each one.
I knew @chrisrap52 would do me a solid and tell me what the ink capacity of this thing is when everybody else just describes it as "holds a lot of ink". Thank you! I'll wait for them to make something that can hold 6ml of ink.
I have not had any burping. Any pen can burp, ED's a little more. Just need to practice proper care, Nib up until writing. Avoid large temperature changes. If you like the pen, want a large ink supply, give it a try. With shut off valve burping is avoided when not writing.
Great vid! I would have never found this pen on my own. Any chance you have a section diameter on it? I love thicker sections! Thanks again for a great vid.

I avoid the events that can lead to burping. Keep pen full. Never uncap nib down. Store pen nib up. If pen cold, allow it to reach room temp before writing. Burps are usually caused by air inside pen pushing ink out.

Purchased the C4 based on this review with the devious intention of swapping in the Q1 Fude nib. Worked well but with an obvious learning curve.

Among all Majohn eyedroppers, only c4 reminds me the most with my grandpa's Waterman in early 1930s.
