Correcting a bit of confusion there around @16:20 ; Colombus did not call Santo Domingo as Isabela first. La Isabela is in the Puerto Plata province. That was the first stable Spanish settlement and town in the Americas established in December 1493. The site is 42 km west of the city of Puerto Plata, adjacent to the village of El Castillo. The area now forms a National Historic Park. Hunger and disease led to mutiny, and a group of settlers, led by Bernal de Pisa, attempted to capture and make off with several ships and go back to Spain. La Isabela barely survived until 1496 when Columbus decided to abandon it in favor of a new settlement founded in 1498 called Nueva Isabela, and soon renamed Santo Domingo. Also the discovery of gold in 1499 within the cordillera central, and the resultant mining boom, meant Isabela was depopulated by 1500.
People are trying to protect you by telling you how dangerous it is in Santo Domingo being on the street practically on the block filming with your phone. They keep saying “stop” “be careful” “don’t film with your phone” 😢

Hi Emily, I’m a Dominican woman who grew up in NYC and now I live in Europe. I just subscribed to your channel, I’m glad that you enjoyed your short cultural trip to Santo Domingo. Next time you visit the DR inform yourself well about the food so you don’t get served the wrong thing, the food is amazingly delicious, very flavorful. I’m sorry to tell you that you didn’t eat Mofongo, what you had was Mangú which is boiled plantain purée and the pastel en hojas are also delicious. Next time you visit try the real Mofongo at Adrian Tropical and try Sancocho. Blessings 🙏🏼🍀💕🇩🇴
I'm amazed how much you know about history 😮😮😮, and it's great that you do something different from others youtubers only going to beaches ⛱️ and waterfalls etc. Great report. Beautiful country.

Dominican here who lives in DR. A little correction. 1st. Trujillo did not participate in the war of independence. He was alive during the US occupation of the country and might have helped in getting them out. 2nd. There is no communist agenda in this country. 3rd Santo Domingo is the 1st European city in America.
I go Santo Domingo all the time and never took the time out to do historical sites and museums. what was the name of the first museum you visited. Love your content btw,
Actually, I heard the man telling you to keep your phone concealed. Probably that’s what many people were trying to tell you. There are motorcycle robbers that can grab your phone off your hand. It’s not that common anymore, but it’s normal that people will warn you about that, especially if you are a beautiful woman walking alone :)
20:22 That's the statue of Simon Bolivar. He was a venezuelan politician and military who led Colombia, Venezula, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, and Bolivia to independence from the Spanish kingdom.
You were eating a Pastel en ojas usually will come wrapped with a plantain’s tree leaf, and the other dish was Mangu , normally consumed at breakfast time, Mofongo is dryer with pork chunks or other meats, fun fact.. Mofongo originated in Puerto Rico but it is super popular in DR
Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban cuisines have a lot of dishes in common but each country might have a different name for them. So many dishes originated simultaneously on all tree islands due to colonization and have the same mix of people and cultures. So you have a Puerto Rican that would say that Mofongo was invented in PR and a Cuban or Dominican would also say the same thing. However, I think Dominicans enjoy cooking more and are better at it. Puerto Rican also love cooking, but are second to Dominicans, and followed by Cubans. Nonetheless, we alll consider each other brothers and sisters in spite of our competitive nature when it comes to sports, especially in baseball (lol).
24:33 "Pastel en hojas" it may be literally translated into _Cake within leaves._ It is basically a Plantain based dish with grinded meat interior(Either beef or pork), wrapped into leaves for boiling. ❤
Hello Emely, you are beautiful. I'm sure you attracted many looks, lol. By the way, I think what you tried was not mofongo, but (Mangú) which is similar, but its not make the same way. Mangu is still good too.
Hey Emily , thank you for reacting to my country one thing g. The church which is the oldest church in the western hemisphere is not where Columbus remain are found currently . It’s where they were discovered . The remains are currently found in the Columbus lighthouse ( faro a colon) also I know other countries claim the remains of Columbus namely , ( Cuba and Spain) but Columbus the remains are in DR the ones in Spain are of his oldest son Diego.

And it is like a tamal but made of plátano. 6th there are beaches in Santo Domingo but you were in a malecón which is Bayside not really beach. Cool video, but Columbus remains haven't been in the Cathedral since 1990, when the Columbus mausoleum began being moved from the Cathedral, piece by piece, and reassembled at the Columbus Lighthouse, which opened it's doors to the public in 1994. Columbus remains have always had and continue to have a constant honor guard protecting and honoring the Grand Admiral. Also, here's our official version, about the history of Columbus remains: Columbus died in Valladolid, Spain, on May 20, 1506, and in 1513 his remains were transferred to Seville. In compliance with one of the testamentary provisions of the discoverer, in 1544 his daughter-in-law Doña María de Toledo brought his remains together with those of her husband, Don Diego Colón, to be deposited in the Main Chapel of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, ceded to the Columbus family by Emperor Charles I of Spain. In 1655 Don Francisco Pio, then Archbishop of Santo Domingo, on the eve of the English invasion of Venables, ordered that all signs on the Columbus tombs be erased. In 1775, when Spain ceded the Spanish portion of the island to France by the Treaty of Basel, Archbishop Fernando de Portillos y Torres and Admiral Gabriel de Aristizabal decided to hastily transfer Columbus' remains to Cuba, hastily removing those that they believed belonged to the discoverer. They were then taken to Spain in 1898 when Cuba gained its independence. In 1877, while repairs were being made to the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, a lead box was found with the name of the Great Admiral, in characters from the time of his death, with irrefutable evidence that the remains it contained belonged to Don Cristóbal Colón, the remains of another of the Colonists buried there having been taken to Cuba. The fact was documented in the presence of numerous Dominican and foreign personalities and has been accepted as authentic by the majority of historians throughout the world.
lol 😂you just proved her point that people argue over where Columbus remains actually are. Not many historians actually think they are still in the cathedral
@@chaselinfield4707 They could be here, in Spain or Cuba, that wasn't my point, the problem is going to the Cathedral post 1990 to see them when everything was moved back in 1990.

Trujillo was fighting invations from haitians, he gave land to them for them to leave Dominicans territories but they fought the military men in the frontier and there was a killings fight between both groups. There is a history to blame him of killing many haitians, which it was a fight amount both. It is that his grandmother was haitian so it maybe an unfair blame, also our elders used to have talco de polvo from Spain because of the sweeting and the heat, and because of that they also blame him of being trying to whiter the race. Lot of our history is told by our enemy, the ones who massacre our people because of being Spaniards and their offspring criollos. Cristobal Colon was in the church under the santuario and the wood box has the initial inscribed.
Santo Domingo was plagued with Communists. That's why Balaguer and Trujillo killed that many people! the "Revolution" of 1960 was led by Francisco Caamano, who was a close friend of Castro's regime... In fact, the house where Raul Castro currently lives in today in Cuba was back then owned by Caamano. The Mirabal sisters were also part of the same revolutionary movement. I'm glad that things took the way they took because we were heavily influenced by Cuba we could actually be a communist country not many Dominicans know this.
I'm a Dominican man who resides in NYC and it's sad to say "La zona colonial" looks deteriorated and disorganized, why is there a loaded truck with platanos around that area? Do better DR🤦🏾♂
No, Trujillo is not considered a hero, he did horrible things to both Haitians and Dominicans... However, he was anti-communist and that ended up being a good thing in the long run since we were very close to becoming Cuba 2.0
