Supermobility and superdiversity: is there order to migration? SOAS, University of London

This Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies Annual Lecture was given by Professor Richard Black on 27th November 2013
We live in a paradoxical world in which there is growing international and inter-regional migration, and yet the legal barriers to such migration have often grown over the past decades. Drawing on recent survey evidence on migration from Africa to Europe, as well as on case studies of 'diaspora' populations in the UK, this lecture will explore the circumstances in which mobility itself, and conditions in countries of destination have become more 'diverse'. Whilst there is clear evidence that migration patterns are changing, this involves the closure of some channels, as well as the opening of others. Diverse patterns of mobility increasingly constitute part of the nature of diversity at destinations.
