The Vikings: The Dark Age Masters Of Shipbuilding | Worst Jobs In History | Absolute History

- The Dark Ages have been misunderstood. History has identified the period following the fall of the Roman Empire as a descent into barbarism - a terrible time when civilization stopped. This episode concentrates on the Vikings and their inventive craftsmanship, the expansive Carolingians' art of exquisite finesse and richness, and the skillful hardworking ingenious Anglo-Saxons. Januszczak shows the Viking skill in making ships and their attacks on Christian centers such as Lindisfarne not only to loot but to defend their own Norse gods. He visits the Jelling stones that commemorated the Danes' conversion to Christianity. Januszczak concludes that in the Dark Ages it was not the sword but the written word, whether in wood, stone, or what he considers the greatest masterpiece of all art, the Lindisfarne Gospels, that defined the age.

Considering the description matches the video, I'm guessing just the title is incorrect
The question remains. Which era had worse jobs?
Why streaming is harder than being a medieval serf
Anything to do with poop.
Right! The titles are frequently misleading
Seeing a human with the ship on Oslo really puts the ships size into perspective! Way bigger than I thought
"The Middle Ages knew better". Ha, that was great. Viking ships were the fastest man made things at the time. Into the Mediterranean, and Canada, amzing.
Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.
Is the title and video mismatched?
Looks like it.
I think so cause they did the worst jobs thing the other day 😂
Yes
Something is up with them. The real episode of jobs had bad sound editing, and now this is a wrongly titled for the upload. Odd, since their production value is normally so good.
@Rasverahtti I understand, but they have a much bigger production team. I love watching them and normally see/hear nothing wrong in the production. Mistakes happen to the best. But isn't it better that they are pointed out, so they can fix them? The original job video was pretty much unwatchable, I stopped half way through. I hope they upload it again with fixed sound. :)
15:25 Valdemar with a 'v' is the name of several danisk kings, Valdemar the Great being the first (1131 - 1182).
His mother, Ingeborg, was a Ruthenian princess from Kiev.
We don't use the letter 'w' much in danish, we simply don't have the sound. We also don't use q, z, or x.
42:25 and for about 2 min; hilarious -going from "its simple" to "Too complicated for me" for interwoven Celtic design of the monks
The focus on Artistic traditions and multiple intertwining historical contexts. Were quite, insightful, inspirational in a way. The Host/you did a outstanding job. Peace*
Did the person who who chose the title actually watch the video? I didn’t see any Victorians or Georgians.
Those book pages are truly amazing. What a passion and devotion those monks must have had.
Thank you so much for showing them to us!
Lol those guys rowing the boat.
"It's like a reward" ( thank you for the quality content)
Great documentary. Other than the gate at 17:51 which sounds like microphone feedback and hurt my ears lol.
The jelling stone also resembles Ragnar Lodbroks death.
"Attempt of the dark age mind to grasp and mimic ghe rhythms of creation"... yeah ok sure. Im gonna go with immitating basket weaving
Why is AH messing around with misleading titles? I am tired of this with Storage Wars and I sure didn't expect misleading titles on this channel. *Sad*
Wasn't "viking" a job description rather than anything even close to what they called each other/themselves?
yes, it would translate to raider or pirate
This isn't Tony Robinson's Worst Jobs in History... it's a Waldemar show, whatever it is, but it's not Worst Jobs
perhaps Mike Rowe should give a second shot at it...
59:14 pretty sure it says that the word was God in that verse too
Video is about Vikings - for anyone curious but not wanting to watch.
When you boil it down, it's always about the Vikings.
Spoiler!
Love these. Hate the barrage of ads.
adblockers, Ublock is a good one
@@mondriaa thank you, I'll check that out.
This video has nothing to with the subject. Misdownload?
Go north young man !
Lololol 😂
What is asymmetrical symmetry? It sounds like an oxymoron 44:06 I'm coming at this as a non artist so idk if this is a thing
If I had to guess, I would say the asymmetry refers to the pieces left out, and then the symmetry refers to that being a repetitive element in the overall design, sort of like a lot of the same asymmetry within a single symmetrical design. I'm not really sure that makes much sense, though. I would probably consider that more of a tessellation since that term refers to repetitive patterns in art, which is what he seems to be talking about.
I'm going with it being a verbal affectation.
Nice documentary but not much about Viking shipbuilding.
@6:50, very Greek looking, and we cannot say they didn’t have horns on their helmets.
I didn’t know the UK has seals.
This had absolutely nothing to do with Viking shipbuilding. It was an hour long show on ancient Viking, Celtic art and jewelry. Nice show, bt I was disappointed.
Awful presenter.
I really don't like this presenter. He's too rough!
??
I can't say he's rough---just too enthusiastic about everything!!! A rock is a rock; didn't seem vibrating and alive to me.
Did he just say " ruler bling " ?
Who is the host? Anyone know his name??? Sooooo amazing he is!!!!
Waldemar Januszcza, the YT channel Perspective has a lot of his docus, his own channel is called Zczfilms
Imagine if this kind of Christianity existed today compared with other religions who can do no wrong, according to the media
How does their art excuse their barbarism? I'd say attacking an island of defenseless monks, killing and enslaving them is quite barbarous and I'm sure those monks didn't appreciate the fine carvings on the ships that carried them away to live a life of torture and slavery.
Our era isn’t better than theirs either. We are slaves all of us of the society and governments.
Its not like the monks where all that innocent as the church was pushing for the killing of all non Christians and even some Christians they thought of not Christian enough. Cant enjoy what the Roman, Greeks, Persians did, they all murdered and enslaved a lot more then the Viking ever did. Guess you hate more modern art as well as that is build upon murder and slavery as well. Just how many aboriginal where killed by the British all very barbaric if you ask me
Weak little man. With weak brain.
Where do they excuse their barbarism? Should we burn and forget about history when it hurts your little feelings? History is still history.
I see the same today in the ancestors of the vikings
How could he ignore the ochre paint in the runes? That needs explanation.
Edit. 20:50. That is not natural light, so should not be saying to wait for sunset.
I'm out.
Those viking must feel stupid watching this😅 thinking they would take their stuff with them to the afterlife😂😂😂
No cause I thought the exact same thing
Had to give it a thumbs down 👎🏼. This isn’t about Viking shipbuilding!
Please fix your title to match the video. This look embarrassingly unprofessional XD
Vikings snd Norse are similar to Russians
That makes sense because vikings made kyiv and prts of russia.
Oh come on, I don’t want to watch another medieval doc, there aren’t enough Victorian era documentaries but there are billions of Middle Ages. Don’t do this again absolute history (wasn’t very absolute now was it)
"From France" 🥲🤣
