  • Never was a night so musical, magical or warm. This recording was made at the height of July, 2013 heatwave in the John McKenna household, Drumkeeran, Co Leitrim. The house has been lovingly restored by the McKenna Society. Five great musicians, steeped in the lore, love and style of McKenna, assembled to reminise and play his music. Seán Gilraine, Shane Meehan, Gregory Daly, Mick Mulvey and Daithí Gormley are in powerful form here. In conversation to be included in a forthcoming DCTV documentary on the impact of emigration on Irish traditional music, they explore, in words and music, the circumstances that gave rise to McKenna's emigration to America, his influences and his legacy. Cameras:Aisling Crudden,Arnauld Rigaud, Specialist advisors; Seán Gilraine, Alphie Mulligan, Director, Tommy Fegan

C.Scott - 1st tune [ of course ] has a few names. I think the oldest name for it might be "Bridie Morley's". My generation mainly learned it from Liam O'Flynn playing it on whistle on the very first "Planxty" record. They called it "Junior Crehan's", after the Co. Clare fiddle player. It is also known as "The Knotted Cord".

Great melodic sound... thankfully no guitars or bodhrans!
