I have watched the first 3 episodes of your statistics course and I have fallen in love with your personality and teaching style; you really are a superman. thanks for all your efforts
I have done B.S (4 years) from University of Sindh, Jamashoro, Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan. But in those 4 years, i could not learn more then this great teacher. Thank you dear sir. Lots of blessings for you.
I have an upcoming Summer Statistics Class and decided to view some lectures online, and have been taking notes with professor Leonard who seems like an excellent Professor. At the same time I was like "I wish Merced College had professors like this" and then I found out he teaches at Merced... mind blown! Small world. Had to rewind like 3 times to make sure I wasn't hearing things!
This prof is the most brilliant teacher of sampling. You clarified issues that my prof failed to do. As I watched I felt as a part of this amazing class.
Professor Leonard isn't just a random dude, he is one of the best math teachers on the Internet. His ratings on "Rate My Professors" are incredible, he has a "Would take again" rating of *100%,* and almost all the ratings have called him "Awesome".
You are a lifesaver. Thank you so much for making this video. I am taking a college class on statistics and my professor is terrible. If I could get away with it I would just watch your videos instead of attending class :)
There are still people who are willing to give their best. Leonard is definitely one of them taking all the time to cover the material in a simple easy to understand way.
After years of high school and now gone through some data analysis courses at my uni, I realised I could not leave my education journey purely to conventional institutions. so now I am on the path of self-educating and these videos brighten up my journey. Thank you Professor Leonard.
Thank you! I am learning little in a graduate-level Stats class. I appreciate your straight-ahead and approachable teaching method, use of all caps (which improves legibility), and applicable examples.
I once again find myself watching Professor Leonard's videos in the interest of tutoring my own students. I'm starting to feel like I owe him a royalty. Given that his lectures are so efficient and understandable, why would I want to go anywhere else? (I'll conveniently fail to mention him to my students, though)
English is not my first language. in class , it was so difficult to understand all that stuff. i am so proud now because after this video , i went back to do my homework and i got everything correct. thank you professor, I am NOW ready for my test on .Monday
It goes to say that there is no such a thing as random sampling, because the idea of randomness alone can’t survive the very idea of bias. Randomness in many contexts is akin to turning a blind eye on something that must be present to achieve fair representation. This is more so of a case when certain subgroups in the population share major needs, aspirations and conditions. The idea of random sampling may work for material subjects, but not much for humans--another distinguishing factor that should be considered when sampling to achieve good representation of the population. So before considering stratum sampling, the degree of consent on certain characteristics within the subgroup should be accurately assessed. If, for instance, we are trying to find some statistics about the birth rate among the American population which consists of several racial and ethnic groups, we may not hit it right if the birth rate among such different groups varies drastically. By the same logic, if within the same group the birth rate is so drastically different, it may not help much to include such groups in the proposed stratum sampling. In any case, sometimes census is the only way serious parameters could be measured. Voting polls are misleading because the effect of the polls on the election predictions themselves as pointed out that no one would want to vote for a losing candidate. In as much as the idea of inferential statistics is tempting, in many cases, cutting corners is not the way to go. It might be a good idea to employ a hybrid of sampling techniques and averaging them out. This should be no headache with the sophisticated computing power we have due to modern technology. There seems to be no substitute to trying many samples and comparing the results and choosing the ones that represent the population from historic time analysis.
I have a B.A. in Mathematics and am an actuary. But I always watch this series once every so-and-so just to stay refreshed although I understand nearly all of it.
Hi John, Professor Leonard's video are extremely helpful as a refresher. I was curious about the actuary profession. How do you like what you do so far?
observation vs. experiment observation - measures specific traits but does not modify the subjects ( polling) experiment - apply some sort of treatment and measure effects on subjects (control and test groups)
Can I know which book you use for this lecture, sir? This lecture was very good, I used it as complementary to my Statistics subject in my college. Thank you
Professor Leonard, can you let me know which book are you using for the source? I would love to know that and practice some of the problems from the same book
Sir, THANK YOU SO MUCH! Currently taking online Basic Concepts of Statistics, and I was going through the book like "wth I'm not passing this," then I made the best decision to come look for examples on UA-cam, and ta-daa! Actually walked through the book with me and I don't even know what book was being used. LIFE SAVER! Made it so simple to understand!
Very clear run-through of random sampling techniques (I like the deliberate mispelling 'strata-fied'). It would be good to add some instruction on how exactly you randomise, including using the random functions on your calculator and the difference between random and pseudo-random.
In the design of experiments, treatments are applied to experimental units in a treatment group, here called test group. In comparative experiments, members of a control group receive a standard treatment, a placebo, or no treatment at all. (This is a Wikipedia definition)
What's the name of the textbook that you usually use for this class? I'm self-learning the introduction to statistics at the moment, and am looking at books to use. Please recommend if you can, thanks!
Simple Random Sample (SRS) is defined as every subject in a population has an equal chance of being selected. When you chose 5 from each group, that would be stratified sampling.
+Shara Naroosh A lot of the time professors will skip sections of the chapters to avoid complete repetitivness or its irrelivent. This professor covers everything you need to pass any class so far as I can tell. I was stupid and believed I could take my statistics course online. I have been struggling untill earlier today when I came accross these lectures. Decided to review from the beginning. Everything seems so obvious now! Amazing what a good lecture can do :P

some of the lectures are missing from your play list sir like 1.2 and 1.4. However you are fantastic and thanks for sharing these lectures. Ibrahim from Afghanistan
For "Convenience Sample", you defined it as the use of RESULTS that are easy to get, but shouldn't it instead be the use of the DATA that are easy to get?
when the professor asked:" how many people understand what I just talked about?" I raised my hand...in front of my laptop.
me too
