      That's the idea! Maybe I'll even find a cheap original mouse. I learned a lot making this converter though.

    On revision 6A motherboards (or newer), which you show here, there is a much simpler way to switch kickstarts. Use a 1 MB ROM and put two kickstart images on there. The ROM I use is a 27c800. It has two address pins which, when installed on the motherboard, will be outside of the ROM socket - one of these pins is the most significant bit address line, which you can pull high or low to select the desired kickstart image.

    6:45 It was common for people to either cut holes in the RF shield, or remove it entirely.

      Bee Jay Thanks! Next will be some PC related stuff. Trying to figure out if the Voodoo2 in SLI is too a bad choice for a Pentium MMX, as some claim.
      Hope it'll be interesting, too.

    • @b33j4y
      @b33j4y 7 років тому

      Pity you can't search the 3DMark99 database to see what was most popular with V2SLI. Perhaps if you email them and explain what you're after they will assist.

    • @flashmeback

      I have a bunch of faster CPUs I will try the cards with. I'll try to find the spot where a faster CPU won't improve overall performance anymore. My assumption is that that CPU will be quite a bit newer than the Voodoo 2. My benchmarks so far show that indeed, there is no performance difference between single or dual Voodoo 2s ony my MMX.
      Except for the higher resolution that is possible with SLI.

    I remember the first time I saw an 500... I was mesmorised for the good part of an hour. First 30 minutes or something, was spend on looking at the design. It looked like something from the future. Never seen anything like it. Then someone ran a demo and some tracker action was demonstrated. Then x-copy. I was blown away, and I had not even seen any games at that time. Then came the games and I was in love with the amiga. I think it was in late 1988. Possible in early 1989. The 500 are still my favorite computer. Though a few games are actually better on the C64. Those are bubble bobble, giana sisters, 1942 and all those "olympic" games from epyx. Especially winther games. Aniway.... Nothing have ever mesmorised me deep for two hours straight, than the a500. I was in a sort of trance. C64's.... Well... They were fun. 500's blew ones mind.

    • @flashmeback
      @flashmeback  6 років тому +1

      Yeah, I am too young for that (born in '85) but I would have loved to witness that time. I think it's stories like yours that make the Amiga legendary. It was just so far ahead of its time, especially when considering the price.

    • @brostenen

      flash /me back And I just got my first 500 a week or so ago. Untill now, I only owned 600's and 1200's. And it still mesmorises me to death. There is something about the 500 that I can not put my finger on. Still love it. Anyway. My lcd tv that I use for vintage computers. The external psu died, and it took the a500 psu to the grave. The tv is dead as well, yet the amiga is 100 percent ok. Now I need to mod an atx, in order for not having any psu die and take a vintage computer to the grave. At least I have an original psu plug at hand. Hehe.

    Just a quick question, how did you build your eeprom programmer with an arduino ?

  • @catriona_drummond
    @catriona_drummond 6 років тому

    My first computer T.T. It had so many awesome games. Miss some of them still today.
    Anyway though, such love and care is almost wasted on a A500. Especially the Kick 3.1, it's gonna be veeery slow.
    Now if you looked at an A4000, Kick 3.1 Buster 11. You know there is even a brand new Amiga OS, that has come out in 2018. ... okay I get it you are not Krösus.
    So how about an A1200? Technically you can beef it up so It's able to browse the web and whatnot. You are probably capable of picking up a broken Turbocard for cheap and fix it...
    My old A4000 had a network card and a 60/50 processor and I could do online banking on it :)
    Had to sell it at some point though, tough times. :(
    Keep up the good work!

    • @flashmeback

    I have seen some adapters for putting a ps2 adapter in the Amiga, not sure if it can be done for the 500 though.
    I have TONS of serial, buss, ps2 and usb mice... I even have a ton of adb Mac mice... any chance you could do a video on building adapters for those mice to the Amiga?
    I have a few adb joysticks also...

    • @flashmeback
      @flashmeback  7 років тому

      The project itself is the smallest part, actually :-) Filming makes everything take about 3x as long for me, and then another 5-6x or so for editing. So all in all maybe 10x as long as it would take to just do the project, but comments like yours make all the work worthwhile! :-D

    I just installed the RGBtoHDMI mod. That too leaves no space for the RF shield! I fixed that by simply choosing to not reinstall the shield. The Amiga works fine without it=)

    • @flashmeback
      @flashmeback  3 роки тому

      Of course it does. Might cause issues with nearby analog stuff and I kinda like to keep everything together. I try to keep my mods reversible and losing the RF shield somewhere in the mess that is my retro room is not reversible 😂

    • @ojkolsrud1
      @ojkolsrud1 3 роки тому

      @@flashmeback Hehe yeah, I can see that. I have all my amiga stuff in one box, so I'll hopefully never lose anything. I like that most people are so reluctant to do permanent mods! For the HDMI mod, I'm thinking about using the accelerator/HDD port cover as a place to fasten a female HDMI plug, as well as a few switches. Therefore I 3D printed a cover I can drill through, while I'm keeping the old cover intact!=) I'll eventually make the same mods as you for floppy and ROM select (though I have heard that you can safely forgo of Kickstart 1.3 - 99% software will run on 3.1). Do you have any extensive RAM upgrades? I have 512+512 FastRAM - will 3.1 run fine with that?

    • @flashmeback
      @flashmeback  3 роки тому

      @@ojkolsrud1 I'm currently running it on the stock 512K and haven't seen any issues (except most demos needing 1M).

      I just pushed the code to GitHub: github.com/rnlf/amigaps2
      It's not documented yet and I'd like to do some more cleanup, but it should work.
      I'll add the pinout for PS/2 and the mouse interface soon, but for now you'll have to look it up in the code (which is not that big, really).
      Hope it's interesting to you.

    Nice work there. I have an A1200, and a very late A500 (which has the large badge, like the A500+, and an A500+ motherboard, but only 512K of RAM is populated). I got an Atari ST mouse with the 1200, so I converted it to an Amiga one, but your Arduino based mouse converter really got my attention. Is there any way I could get the source code?
    You should look into building a TerribleFire TF530 accelerator card for the A500, it will give you 2MB of RAM, an IDE controller, and a 030 CPU. It's a DIY kit, and the author sells bare PCBs on eBay for 5£ + shipping. The rest is available at Mouser, except for the CPU.

    • @flashmeback
      @flashmeback  7 років тому

      I'm planning to put the source on GitHub, I just wanted to add a few extra features like making it switchable to Atari mode and clean up the code a bit first. I might skip those steps and upload it tomorrow evening. I'll report back when I've done it!

      It was a little off putting but if you turn the video speed down to .75, although it looks really slow with the video, you can understand what you are saying a little better. Great videos and some useful ideas. Will have to look at my Original KS switcher I have in my A500 I bought back around KS2.04 came out. Definitely no problems in my case and just drilled a hole in the back for the switch so I could access it easily.
      I liked the idea of the Gotek and DF0 swapping. ;)

      @flashmeback  6 років тому +2

      bamdadkhan Well, sure I know I don't technically need them. But that's how the comouter was first created. It also gives an extra bit of physical stability and weight.
      The machine feels cheaper and incomplete without the RF shielding. And if I keep them in, they have to be derusted or else the rust will spread and damage more stuff with time.

    aww.. you should have thrown away the top RF shield instead of ruining your excellent kickstart switcher project. Top RF shield is not needed at all and actually just traps heat.
