This is the song and album that truly got me into hard rock music. I was probably 12 years old when it came out. One way or another I saw the video for Poundcake and I asked my mom to buy me the CD. I've been a massive Van Halen fan ever since. And I love all their albums.
The hits on this album are Poundcake, Runaround, Right Now and Top of the World. 316 is a little instrument piece Eddie used to play during his live guitar solo portion of the show.
that's a great album. i think in some interview Eddie said that he wanted Alex's drum sound more upfront than it was on previous albums, to give his drumming more exposure and appreciation. the drum sound is certainly one part of the rich sound the album has.
You've reached For Unlawful...the first album I knew of as it was happening...at 13. I knew nothing! The first album my older cousin played was me to woo me was Pasadena '77. THIS one though, was MY album. I recorded the vids and bought the magazines that showed Ed's VERY new and different guitar...On your awesome trajectory, you'll get to the epic solo in Pleasure Dome sooner or later, and I'll be happy. Dude...your videos make us VH geeks happy. I make silly tune sketches myself...but loving VH is something soooo many of us can't help.
You're right! The mix is more dense. They gave Mike more bass "space" on the spectrum. Also Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin) helped Alex get a phenomenal sound out his drum set. It'll show it every song you/we/anyone hear of this album. Alex rules here.
Andy Johns worked with Led Zep and Alex wanted him to come on this record to give him the "John Bonham" sound of drums. Andy also gave more bass to the overall mix. It was in the era of folks driving around in their cars boasting and boosting their bass. Ted Templeman who worked with them in the Dave era was also pulled in.
That’s straight up volume bro. Try another called, Judgement Day next. Dude, they’ve been multitracking since Les Paul and Buddy Holly. Headphones, only way to listen to VH… 😎
Love your analysis of the recording/mixing quality of this. The Balance album is heads and tails even better quality, by far their finest sounding recordings.
Sammy is one of the best lead contemporary rock singers ever. The dude just delivers in everything he does. Studio or live Sammy always brings the jive. From Montrose to his solo career to VH to everything after. And IGAF if he's using auto tune at nearly 80 years old. Anyone that doesn't like Sammy Hagar doesn't like me and the feelings are mutual.
That's the sound of a room on a 32 multi-track console. I would suspect the drums are the only thing left of the original recording. Eddie was tripping on layered rhythm guitars at that point....But he was able to pull it off Live, much like Jimmy Page did before him.
They’re early the very beginning Van Halen first album Van Halen Van Halen even on vinyl sounded great and they do an awesome job recording production of course live they sound damn good too. It’s called. Good equipment, money snow object make sure it’s right or don’t do it.
Real MUSIC!!!!!!

A start to finish amazing album.
cliff. I know either your pin # or your garage door code:)
@@sweetwilliam5150 VH fans are definitely easy targets for thieves lol.
I have always enjoyed the heavy tone and steady beat of Alex Van Halen's drumming.
When this hit the radio I taped it..and blasted it as.hard AS POSSIBLE
Also, this is a just press play album. Turn it up full blast on a road trip, you will be flying
Yes, a cordless drill against the guitar!! Another must own Album. VanHagar!
9.6 volt Makita for those trying to match the tone on stage etc.
VAN HALEN
Now who doesn't like a little Pound Cake in life?
Lemme get on Lemme get on!!! Some o dat!!!!!

If you listen to the beginning you can hear the power drill
VAN HALEN IN THEIR PRIME!!
I agree
that's a great album.

The outro song on fuck won’t be wobbly ..top of the world .. great fucking song
Some fine fine stuff 😂
I've always loved this song and this album
My favorite VH album overall.🔥
Bon Scott was arrested for unlawful carnel knowledge, among other charges as a teen in Australia
Great reaction. Although I must say I miss playing this cassette tape through two blown out speakers.

I have this CD in my truck right now!
Ed used a drill on the intro and in the solo, there's also a keyboard bed in the background giving it a full sound overall
Thank you mug may I have another
Listen closely to the fade out and you’ll hear a sick guitar run from Ed..turn that part up
Song 2 Judgement Day
The Makita drill❤️
EVH!!!!!!!!
Ed was never my favorite guitar player, but I think he is the best to ever do it.
Eddie playing the guitar with the power drill - wild.
Technically, playing the drill and the guitar pickups pick it up! It’s fun😌RIP Eddie💔
Their last GREAT album. And wow, is it good. Enjoy!
Back to the rock with this album..the glossy pop shine was gone. 🤘
Diver Down to OU812 was poppy but good!

My all-time favorite VH song!

Best album with Sammy
The difference could be because you now hear 2 lead guitars with Eddie and Sammy both playing..
Love your analysis of the recording/mixing quality of this. The Balance album is heads and tails even better quality, by far their finest sounding recordings.
Van Hagar certainly has some good music, but nothing beats early VH.
I'll take Van Halen 85-96 over Van Roth...except VH1

Try Listening to the Live MTV Version of this song
Eddie used less gain on the guitars, but more overdubs and texture
no
Sammy Hagar doing the vocals there but give the drummer some love too and we can’t forget about Eddie Van Halen
I saw this tour. I love Dave but I was blown away at how much power Sammy has in his voice.
