This is a common misconception with helicopters, and one of the first questions I get asked. When we give someone there first trial flight at the end of the lesson we demonstrate an autorotation. A lot of your training is practicing autos and other similar procedures. Answering the question the way you did is like saying "cars are dangerous, if the engine stops they will swerve off the road, roll and burst into flame instantly"

Typically it will take 10-12 hours of training just to be able to hover. Once you master that the Real fun begins (i.e. Autorotations, Advanced auto's,LTE, Mast bumping understanding, Settling with power, Run-on landings, Quick Stops, Pinnacle landings, Confined area landings, Slope landings, etc.). Lots of training but also Great Fun!

It is for communications. (I haven't flown any helicopter that uses that particular switch as a weapons switch). Most have a 2 position switch. Pull it to the first indent for the intercom, and all the way in for the radio. Also, some have a floor switch so the pilot, who is not flying, can talk without touching the controls. For aircraft with multiple radios (AM, FM, UHF, VHF) there would be a selector switch you would use to pick which radio you want to transmit on.

Of all the pilots I have flown with, he is easily one of the top 5.
This footage was shot as part of a documentary we were making.
    Unfortunately it fell through.
Shame as it we were getting some fantastic footage and I'm sure the doco would have been great.

I had an intro lesson yesterday and my instructor said that he hasn`t seen somebody hover like that in years; the last one to do it that well was a military jet jockey.. im only 17 and im looking at this to be my future.. plan on starting flight school in september, flew a hyper sensitive heli with my instructor, had a real fun time; hover is almost like trying to balance a plate on the top of a stick and ur trying to make small precise corrections to keep the plate spinning with stability, fun!

  • @TocsiickRL

excellent instructor! I like how he clearly and thoroughly goes over the controls to the point where the viewer (me) understood how to control the aircraft. Also, he gave reference points to watch, and little pointers throughout the flight and i’m sure made the person learning feel comfortable and confident in their abilities.
If i ever was learning to fly, which i hope to someday, I WOULD PAY DOUBLE TO HAVE THIS GUY!

I'm not a helicopter pilot, however, I want to be one. From what I've been studying about helicopters recently I think they mostly use the yaw just for rotating while hovering. Once you're moving you use the cyclic and the yaw is simply used to prevent yourself from spinning.
As for why it's a pair of pedals, I think it gives more precision than if it was a smaller control on the cyclic stick. Also, you don't want to do too much with one hand since cyclic is a very crucial control.

I’m a 10,000 hour fix wing pilot and took some lessons for fun in this type heilo. I was surprised how little movement you need in the controls ( almost like you think were you want to go would move it 😄). Also hovering was way harder than I thought it would be. They say easier to teach a non pilot than a fix wing to fly Helios. It was like balancing one foot on top a basketball 😬. Much fun 😆👍🏻

Older helicopters have a throttle either as a separate lever or built into the collective (so that while you pull up or push down the collective to change blade pitch, your twist the collective to throttle up or down).

  • @powerplay1000

By moving forward you enter what is called Translational lift. The efficiency of the hovering rotor system is improved with each knot of incoming wind gained by horizontal movement or surface wind. As the incoming wind enters the rotor system, turbulence and vortexes are left behind and the flow of air becomes more horizontal. All of these changes improve the efficiency of the rotor system and improve aircraft performance.

Great instructional video on the R44. What I would do is to mount an additional camera above the steering column. This would help students understand the minute input that is needed on the cyclical to cause a change in the flight position.
Also, talk about how much feet input you give for the tail rotor to start a turn or during the landing process. You guys have a beautiful area, where you fly.

The foot pedals are usually for the stablizing of the chopper from not spinning for torque of the rotor blades turning

The hole reason for your first post was to say "before picking your school pick the right helicopter" If you were a pro heli pilot you would know its far more important to get the right training and school. I was taught by an instructor who has 14,000 in a R22. Most of my training was in the mountains and at altitude. I put that down to how I got my job, where I got this job and why I’m still alive today. Its not the Nut on the rotor head but the Nut behind the controls that makes the difference

you pull up on the collective pitch stick you go up you push down on the stick you start to go down because the blades are changed from horizontial position for the low stick to a more angled for a raised stick. This is just how a turbine fan would blow more air principle. Ofcourse you still need the antitorque pedals to regulate you spin around in a circle as well when your doing the rising. But i am wondering what level in your chopper effects going backwards or forwards i.e effects the tilt of the rotors backward or forward

In flight we are able to produce both a negative or low G (weightless feeling) and a positive or high G (increasing weight feeling) condition. Pull the nose up and you get positive Gs....Push down and you get negative Gs. In negative G pushover in a 2 bladed helicopter you risk a "Mast Bumping" It is a condition applicable to two bladed helicopters with a teetering rotor head such as the R22/R44, Bell47 and Bell 206

though for a chopper i would say decrease or increasing the drift of the rotors produced vertical rise or fall. So i would imagine landing or taking off is just a matter of varying the collective pitch stick . With the back rotor varying your direction or spin you go. So its really kind of just getting use to varying the collective pitch stick and the foot petals in a controlled manner and not screwing up specially when it comes to landing or taking off .... and if your flying low you better watch your surroundings or equipment if you got it

Just as it has nothing to do with Turbine Engine operation blowing more air either..! You might want to do some research, or at least wait for a educated response before you decide to attempt to answer "YOUR OWN" questions...!

As an unexperienced observer (whose main exposure to rotary aircraft is through various videogames and simple toys), I was surprised to see how much the cyclic was used for turning as opposed to the pedals. I.e.: rolling into turns as opposed to spinning around to face the intended direction. I'm also curious why the preferred location for that control is a pair of pedals rather than, say, a hat on the control stick.

You can put 2 people and fill up a r22 not a problem, if your to fat, fly the r44. R22's don't just break up, robinson have tested the r22 to 140 kts with no retreating blade stall or structural damage. Mast bumping is due to incorrect pilot input, You can "unload the disc" I don't know why you would? But if you lower the collective you will stop tail rotor roll and solve the problem

Im currently in progress of getting my private pilots license. I know it seems very difficult at first, but after you figure out what youre supposed to listen for then it becomes a lot simpler

Wow you must e the greatest pilot ever. I can tell right now you have never been in a 300C ( I have trained in both ) There is only one good point for the R22 and that is low aquisition costs. Again I believe the only helicopter you have ever flown is the R22 so you have nothing to compare it to

Haha, the H300C is by no means a superior helicopter. the R22 has the same engine as the 300 which revs at 2700 not 3200 (more reliable). The 300 has high maintenance costs, and is also a 1964 design and nothing much has changed. The 300 is also very slow and can suffer from ground residence. The R22 is a great steep to the R44 (worlds most popular helicopter) and then onto the Jet Ranger and R66. If you can fly a R22 you can fly anything, even a goofy 300!

I did my Private pilots licence and when I went for a flight in a Bell 47 I wanted to do my commercial Helicopter licence but it was more than all my flying costs to date. Also to get a Job, you needed about 200 hours of experience and like other industries, that was the hard part.Try getting a job as a truck driver with no experience for example!! Lots of Commercial Pilots but a lot less with more than 200 hours. Learning to fly a plane first was only a slight help and you have to unlearn some things.Would definitely be on my list if I could afford it.
The Bell was a fantastic experience although some may not enjoy the view through the floor.

If you are going to take flying lessons, before picking your school fly both the R22 and the H300C. Guaranteed you will pick the 300C, it is alot more aircraft and alot safer. The R22 has a usefull load of 500lbs ( thats both pilots and fuel ) The 300C has a usefull load of 950 lbs and it is alot closer to the turbine helicopters you will want to transittion too. Also it doesn't have that goofy Robinson cyclic. Anyone who has been in oth will definetely pick the Schweizer ( Now Sikorsky) 300C

I love the cyclic, it looks much easier. Also love the R22.

@TheAviator789 Average costs are about $500-$600/ hr ...a private licence runs u about $17,000 and a commercial licence consists of 105 hrs and runs about $26,000

Maybe an odd question, but have you ever had a passanger or student that you felt could possibly force the controls to intentionally harm the flight ?
Had a fixed wing student once that 20 minutes in started relaying all the different ways she had tried to kill herself in the past. Such a creepy feeling that once back on the ground I explained to the director why i wouldnt be the CFI for that student.
In a helicopter, the inputs are so slight that it would be all but impossible to outfight inputs to get on the ground safely. As they say, airplanes want to fly, helicopters want to kill you...

Yes I understand that cheapest is not always best. But there is nothing wrong with the Teter head system. Bell uses it on the Iroquois, cobra and 206 and the Hiller system is very similar. Let me get this right, your now saying that you should only fly a fully articulated rotor system? Complicated doesn't mean better, if you have flown a twin you would know that!
