Boston's Gang Culture of The Late 80's Early 90's pt. 1

- In the Boston's inner city neighborhoods of Roxbury, Mattapan, and parts of Dorchester there was a unique urban street culture taking place. Boston is not known for it's contributions to hip hop and street culture but I don't think that's fair. #boston #black #gangster #gang #hiphop #urban #projects #hood #rap #bostonhoods #roxbury
Dudley St, Columbia point, Orchard Park, Academy, 4 corner, Corbin, Humboldt... 80s and 90s were no joke...NYC Kats came thru and found out Boston gully AF ... and those were the days
Yeah them NY Boyz tried to set up at Lennox and got evicted directly 🤣🤣
I’m an original member and founder of the Highland Ave. Blackhawks. Thanks for the shoutout. The city was crazy during the early 90’s
Yo! For real? Thanks I appreciate the comment and also for watching . If you ever would like to share any experiences I would absolutely love to hear all about it. Great choice of teams by the way I have more Blackhawks gear than any other non Boston team. Thanks again for the comment man take care have a great night

Facts lol Blackhawks hats are so dope. I had a purple and black on I used to wear daily. Boston was insane in the 90s, I was in Somerville which wasn’t like Dorchester but there would be multiple fights a day! I was like 6 years old fighting little racist kids lol. They would call me when some little kid was bothering my older cousins and friends. All they had to do was give me some candy and I was whooping anyone 😂. My cousin taught me how to use a headlock and I rarely lost a fight. They would be swinging and I would just jump up and grab their neck. Walking them around by their neck lol. Very effective move!
Man im born & raised in Roxbury Grove Hall people don't really understand how dangerous the city was back then especially in the inner city hoods shit was open warfare im glad to be here now. Salute tho great video keep digging up the history that needs to be told good and bad and ill say from 1988-1995 shit was outta control and somewhat in the mid 2000's 05 06 07 but nothing like back then God bless
Thanks brothah I appreciate that very much! I know people don’t realize for a short period Boston was as dangerous as any other city but especially in those neighborhoods. And I remember a lot of guys from the 80s we’re getting out of prison in the mid 2000’s mixing with the younger dope boys and things starting popping off again. Thanks again for the comment 🙏

People can say what they want about Ray Benzino, but i ALWAYS saw him reppin’ the 3, hard!! Throwing up the 3/👌, even had a big ass 👌 chain. Shout out to Benzino, RSO, Made Men and WiseGuys. Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, Jamaica Plain, South End, etc.
Who remembers the X-Men? They were like the boogie men. Kids would be like, "yo don't even talk about them. They'll pop up." Haha. The Adidas was three for the stripes and your fingers made a "b"
That’s a riot 🤣🤣 I didn’t know you from PJs in JP Oozing Macismo’s from da hood!! Yeah I knew it was the 3 stripes but wasn’t sure if it was for neighborhoods or something too. Thanks brothah love the comment have a great night!!

Sure do. I lived on School St across the street from the bldg they mostly lived in and it was no joke. The police didn’t come around there

Yo! You took me back! What was so crazy was how gangs would be across the street from each other, so most of them went to the same high school. I remember how you couldn’t be caught “perpetrating”, meaning you couldn’t mix and match brands, like wearing Nike and Adidas at the same time, and in my neighborhood you couldn’t wear Nike at all. It had such an impact on me that I still rock my dogs to this day. 3 for the stripes!
Hell yeah man!! I’m glad you enjoyed it I’ve been wanting to get this topic since I started the channel!! I think it’s so funny how like 10 years ago these Boston area kids wear rocking Nike Air Max exclusively I was nah man not in Boston🤣🤣 I have 4 pairs of adidas in my apartment currently and a full black track suit that my daughter asks me not to wear in public 🤣🤣 it was a wild time but I miss the fashion and the culture . Trying to take the number 28 bus in the late 80s early 90s was an adventure .all the gangs you had to pass. Theodore Street ,Baird Street,Hansborough , Wilcox Street, esmond St., Franklin Field, Franklin Hill, Castlegate Road ,Intervale Street ,Copeland St.,Orchard Park and I’m sure I left out a couple crazy times .smh

Right lol
Growing up in Boston in the 80s & 90s we never thought of being "white". You were either Italian, Irish, black, Puerto Rican, German, Portuguese etc. The white brand came from outside of Boston usually from the media around the millennium or so.
Being an Italian from eastie, i never knew that I was "white" until well into high-school. We always thought that "white" people were the anglo wasp types with names like smith, jones etc.
Yeah I agree with your comment 💯
Technically Italian is of Latin Descent! So us Italians technically aren’t “white”
I was only a child when all this was going on but I drive buses for the Mbta . And it’s wild hearing people ask “ does this bus go to Columbia point “ or ask “ does this bus go to city hospital “. That’s real throwback .
Wow, I was born in 82 also. But in San Francisco completely opposite side of the country, but I have a lot of love for the East Coast.
Thanks for the comment I’ve always dreamed of visiting the bay . I would choose that over southern Cali any day
@jasontrimmins8264 it depends on the city for real. I love San Francisco but I'm not a big fan of Oakland but Berkeley and Alameda are bomb. Southern California is hit and miss. I moved to LA in 2009 to work on classic cars and it was cool in the beginning. Of course now it's a hell scape, but I think it can turn around .
Times have changed. Wow! I see Black folks walking the streets of Southie and Caucasian people in Roxbury. A change for the better in these Boston hoods
❤

Thanks for a great video Jason. How about a full video about Salvatore Sperlinga?
Thanks David! If I do a full length video on the Winter Hill gang I’ll do a big piece on him. I could do a solo video about him though you are right. He was definitely the biggest bookie in Somerville and helped them financially during tough times. Everyone said he was a solid guy, I read Citizen Somerville great read. Castleton wore Orlando magic hats,Intervals always wore adidas, plus they had the park with the adidas tree.
Intervail rocks the Cleveland Indians, then they linked up with the mag(magnolia) who rocks the stealers, and Columbia road who rocks Colorado Rockies,, and called them selves M.I.C. ,Alot of them would tattoo all three teams on them and they also rocked KC, for Killa camp, but I did here there was some internal beefing so I don't know what's going on with them, I was on the block with those dudes for like 5-6 years in the max N1, I drew up so many Cleveland Indians logos and KC, and the CR and stealers logos for alot of there tats
Very cool of you to show a picture of 'the Fab 5' at the University of Michigan! I lived down the hall from those guys at South Quad in 1991-92. I'm guessing you showed their pic as a representation of the early 1990's -- very spot on!

Great information on old school Boston streets! Since you cover Massachusetts street politics do a video on the infamous Walpole state prison!! Real gladiator school from back in those days with a lot of bloody history! It would be an interesting topic to do a video on for all the Mass people
Thank you I’m definitely going to do a video about old jails in Mass that no longer exist. But a lot of people want to here about Walpole specifically. I know that back on the 50’s thru the 70’s it was brutal back then I know people that were there. Thanks for commenting I appreciate it!
@@jasontrimmins8264I know a few ex cons still alive that were there when they had grenades and guns in Walpole. Crazy
Love your videos! One topic suggestion: Since you have a lot of newcomers to your channel, maybe a full retelling of Whitey Bulger’s story, but also with a primer on the rackets (what are number games, how did bookmaking work), and a rundown on organized crime and corruption. Your story telling is so good that I feel like I get to understand really well *why* these groups respond with violence in different ways, or how it’s because there were these rules and expectations of behavior *why* the consequences for certain things would be a certain way. Anyways, I think a lot newcomers to your channel but haven’t heard the whole Whitey story, especially not as well as you could tell it. A “beginner friendly” style script would really make the numbers! Thanks again for your great videos! 👍🏽
Thank you very much for the comment and the compliment very much appreciated 🙏I would be lying if the thought hadn’t crossed my mind my first video to do well was the video about the guy who killed Whitey. Good video. Were there any juggalo gangs in Boston in the 90s?
There definitely probably was juggalos but definitely not in a gang closets thing we had were punks and nazi skinhead gangs
I don’t think middle school kids on the North Shore were wearing starter jackets because of the gang culture in Boston… Starter jackets and shark tooth hats was a huge trend all over the United States… Athletes wore these jackets in commercials.. starter sponsored the NFL. It was a huge craze. To be honest, I don’t remember anything as popular as those jackets… And the cool thing about those jackets were everyone had a different sports team because you were lucky enough to get your hands on whichever one was available at the store.

All of this is BIG facts! In the early 90's I was the ripe young age of about 18. Boston was on fire then! In the vid u mentioned who wore this? Hornets. I had 2 twin cousins from the crew that was known for the Hornets. Tent City Hornets down South End. Castle Gate at one point wore Chicago Bears and few others. The Hoyas was dudes from Georgetown Projects who use to wear that its obv why. We use to use black sharpies to black out the city of the fitteds to rep our sets. For example (since you brought them up lol) Orchard Park wore Portland Trailblazers they would black out all letters except the OR and black out the leg of the R so it said OP Trailblazers. What was always unique was you know how "today's gangs" pretty much stay around their area? Boston dudes use to be waaaaay Downtown, Dedham Mall, Cambridge Side Galleria etc where no one can claim 😂 you STILL knew who was who by hats. It use to be a place Downtown called "Picture House" in the then called Lafayette Place. Alls it was, was a store front that advertised Boston Gangs in pictures 😂 The dude use to take a pic of all your crew and put the Gang name on the pic. His store was laced with dam near every set. It then became a problem cuz one gang would be leaving and run into their opps coming in to take a pic randomly and it would be smoke right there 😂 Alot of passes were given there cuz the location was hot police-wise/downtown and everyone was away from their hood 😂 In hindsight, looking back, that owner was promoting fights and gang culture which wasn't a good thing lol. Wow, I went to Snowden for high school in the late 90’s and that was my first introduction into the South End gangs as a Mattappan kid. At that time Tent City weren’t going by the Hornets (at least the dudes who I knew) and actually had beef with the “Mass Ave Hornets”. The Tent city dudes wore Minnesota Twins hats that a TC on it for Tent City. In fact, there was a shooting at the freaking Copley Mall (right before the bridge to the Prudential) between the 2 gangs. I’ll never forget that and still can’t believe these dudes opened fire at the Copley Mall.
@@DonIzNice1804 Yea cats had different fazes w the hats. I remember them blowing at Copley that was Bananas 😂 I might know you. I got kicked out of Snowden and had to go to Edco Youth Alternative Program in Kenmore Square. That school was small asf 😂 Only gangs were there was me and my dude, Academy Darkside and Lennox.
Remember STRICTly hiphop ?
Was it a radio station or program?

The gangs of Boston will never die, just multiply!
Facts!
Roxbury representer...crime as whole is down compared to back in the day but don't get it twisted its a lot of senseless violence taking place today. I'd argue the crime now is more callous now than before. I done got shot at just sitting across the street from my house as a civilian and I'm still in Roxbury
Thank you I appreciate the comment and agree with the sentiment. Boston was way more dangerous in the 80s and 90s but at least people were aware she understood the violence to a certain degree. I fell like the violence today is very random and senseless. I feel bad for a lot of kids out there, there is literally no sense of community anymore.
100% man.@@jasontrimmins8264
Do a video on Charlestown state prison the first SP in the country & how before then the fort in south boston Castle island served as the state penitentiary I can’t even picture that what did they stay in the castle or what 😂 also there’s the old Charles street jail which is now a hotel but they kept the same outside walls of the building
Dude Charlestown was a legit castle dungeon and I heard back and the day guys were taking decades just to get out of Charles st it was so bad. Very good ideas I was actually thinking about doing one about the old Salem jail up until 1989 they were guys in there crapping in 5 gallon buckets wild. Maybe I should do one on all the old jails . Great idea thanks for the comment!
I new some guys who got settlements at the old Salem jail for having to do that. Crazy..
I agree with tmarq said above that would be super dope
I was around Through the late eighties through the nineties. Boston was no joke. Lots of violence in all the neighborhoods. Totally different story now.. I remember being out downtown in bars. And a certain crew would walk in. We would look at each other and say time to go! We didn't want to get caught up in the middle of those shenanigans. And there were a lot of violent crews around town in those days. I went to Boston schools. So I knew kids all through the city. So we could kind of come and go all over the place. but you had to make sure to keep your eyes open.
Absolutely, I’ve heard that a lot . I guess the bars down Faneuil Hall in the 80s were pretty rough there were a few frequented by Charlestown guys and several people a night cut sliced up
Theater district too. We used to go to Domenics on Tremont for last call and beyond
That was an interesting part of going to BPS. You knew dudes from every part of the city and you could go to their neighborhood with them every once in a while. Not all of their friends wanted you there but you'd get a pass for the day but personally I could feel that violence/ threat right under the surface. Mind you, I'm white... i felt it haha. I had boys with Cathedral, Villa Vic, Lenox, Tent City, C square, Humboldt, Green Street, Eggy, Seaver St, I could go on and on. Let's just say I wasn't going there on my own tho. Being the cool white dude only works when you're with your friend haha

Thanks brother
Dont forget about Corbet.
I know I didn’t mention a lot going to do a bunch more videos about there period/topic. Did Corbet use the Reds?

You should do a video on Cape Verdean gangs. Wendover, CVP, etc. Those dudes were fucking crazy. I remember there was a shooting on Norfolk or Bowdoin Street and they shot at the detectives INVESTIGATING THE SCENE. Like, wtf.
Oozing Machismo are you hacking my computer 🤣🤣 I’m definitely doing CVO vs CVP aka the cape verdean conflict probably 3 videos down the pipe. I did one way back about it but it kind of sucks 🤣 early stages of the channel 🤦🏻 but I agree crazy stuff those guys get down
What you know about Wendover and Dudley St. Uphams Corners...lol.
CVO cats that I knew where good dudes. One of them let me stay with him when I was getting a divorce and when my kids would come thru they all were so respectful. Wish I could say names but I'm done with that part of my life.
Did you see my video about it?
@@dongordito00 not that much, that's why I asked for the video... I did know kids involved tho, but not myself.
Can't believe I believe I survived that s***.
I moved back and forth from Murderpan to Dorchester to Eastie where I was the only so called "Black" kid in the Orient heights project in Eastie. No problems till I moved to the South End (Hornets)around my so-called people😂.
Literally had a walk through 18 gangs to get to Middle School (Dearborn) in high school (Madison Park). First time gun in my face eighth grade this punk from Orchard Park (homework) 2nd 9th grade. So I don't want to hear s*** about bullying that was over homework and then picking up my friends tab. The p**** always got us in trouble.
Was rolling with Little Goya for a little bit, by 10th grade I ended up with the Asian kids in Ghost Shadows from New York.
And yes I was flagging in the wrong colors for my hood but they became family after 10 years. The military was literally safer then being at home. Now the area is full of hipsters and drug addicts and I moved to the country 😂 they can't have that s***
But The Pan it's always going to be my home 💙
Heeeyyyy my childhood street sign. Humboldt Ct. and CWP while affiliated were not actually the Raiders. Raiders were towards the Seaver St. side. Townsend to MLK side had a slightly different thing going on but it was connected.
Really can explain a lot further?
Castle Gate, Intervale, & Algonquin st. Wore Red Sox hats.

I think the hornets were on Worchester St. in the South End as a pushback to Lenox.
Yeah that’s what a couple guys have said I’ve heard Mass Ave and I’ve also heard tent city as well but definitely south end you’re right south end used to be lit ! thanks for watching and commenting I’m releasing part 2 tomorrow or Sunday full in depth alliances and rivalries.
Mass Ave are the Hornets. Lenox and Mass ave collaborated. Im not sure if thats the case now. Lenox and Villa Park are moreso cliqued up

That’s a good idea I never thought to check and see if there’s old footage of cops Boston out there. I wouldn’t be able to use it unless I pay for it and I don’t pay for anything!!
